Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore the association between breastfeeding and the prevalence of breast, thyroid, and cervical cancer among Korean adult women. Methods The study was a secondary analysis of data from the Korea Genome and Epidemiology Study. The final samples were 113,944 Korean women among 173,205 urban-based cohort participants collected between 2004 and 2013 for adults aged forty and over. To determine the association between female cancers and breastfeeding experience, the number of childbirth, and total breastfeeding duration, logistic regression analysis was done. The demographic characteristics, health behavior, and female history were adjusted. Results The prevalence of breast cancer was 1.37 times higher in the non-breastfeeding group than in the breastfeeding group. Compared to having breastfed for more than 36 months, the prevalence of thyroid cancer was 1.68 times higher at breastfeeding for 13 to 36 months, 1.67 times higher at breastfeeding for 6 to 12 months, and 2.06 times higher at breastfeeding less than 6 months. Also, the prevalence of cervical cancer was 1.54 times higher at breastfeeding for 13 to 36 months, compared to breastfeeding for more than 36 months. Conclusion This study found that breastfeeding experience and a longer breastfeeding duration are associated with reduced risk of breast, thyroid, and cervical cancer in Korean women. It can be used as a basis for encouraging breastfeeding, and suggests further research on modifiable factors that reduce cancer risks

RS485 Image Sensor for Digital Cinema System

Get PDF
To activate various devices using RS485, a repeater is generally used. In current digital cinema systems, each device is controlled with RS485 by mixing RS485 and DMX512. However, as today’s cinema equips hundreds of 4D chairs and the environmental directors, it is nearly infeasible for the legacy system to control. To this end, this paper designs and implements a new system which makes hundreds of 4D chairs and the environmental directors be controlled simultaneously exploiting RS485 network topology and its repeaters. The proposed approach is tested in a real-time system for assessing the performance by Paessler Router Traffic Grapher (PRTG) in Windows environment. Simulation results show that the tested system supports 4D chairs and their motions are well operated simultaneously with RS485

Susceptibility to Oxidative Stress is Greater in Korean Patients with Coronary Artery Disease than Healthy Subjects

There are some evidences that the increased oxidative stress and thus increased oxidizability of lipoproteins and DNA can contribute to the development of certain human diseases, such as cardiovascular disease. To confirm the association of DNA damage with cardiovascular disease, we investigated susceptibility of DNA to oxidation in lymphocytes and oxidative stress related parameters in blood of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Subjects were consisted of 42 patients (27 men, 15 women) with documented CAD and 49 apparently healthy subjects (33 men, 16 women) as controls. Cellular DNA damage induced by 100 µM H2O2 was measured using Comet assay and quantified by TL. There were no differences in age (61.4 ± 1.7 years vs 62.0 ± 2.2 years) between the two groups. All the findings were shown to be independent of either sex or smoking habit. The patients showed significantly higher TL (87.3 ± 1.6 µm) compared to the control (79.3 ± 1.7 µm, p<0.01). Plasma TRAP, vitamin C, γ-tocopherol, and α-carotene levels in patients group were lower than those of control groups, while erythrocytic catalase activity increased in patients group. In conclusion, we observed that reduced overall antioxidant status was closely connected to higher susceptibility of DNA damage in CAD patients

Mutagenic activity of river water from a river near textile industrial complex in Korea

The mutagenic activity of XAD-2 adsorbates and water extracts recovered from nine locations of the Kumho River was tested on S. typhimurium TA98 strain to identify the source of the mutagenicity. A sampling site, receiving effluents from the textile industrial complex located in Daegu City, showed extraordinarily high mutagenic activity, especially in the presence of S9 mixture, at all sampling time in both XAD-2 adsorbates and dichloromethane extracts. This indicated the existence of the frame-shift mutagens in the Kumho River, same type of mutagens detected in previous studies by other researchers in the Nakdong River into which the Kumho River discharges. The fractionation study showed that the mutagenic chemicals in the river water are mid-polar. Furthermore, mean tail length obtained by single cell gel electrophoresis assay (Comet assay) showed consistent dose-dependent DNA damage, indicating that the chemicals in the river water not only act as frame-shift mutagens but also break human lymphocytes DNA strain. Chemical identification of the mutagens should be require

Depression and increased risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in individuals with obesity

Aims: the longitudinal relationship between depression and the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is uncertain. We examined: a) the association between depressive symptoms and incident hepatic steatosis (HS), both with and without liver fibrosis; and b) the influence of obesity on this association. Methods: cohort of 142,005 Korean adults with neither HS nor excessive alcohol consumption at baseline were followed for up to 8.9 years. The validated Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression score (CES-D) was assessed at baseline, and subjects were categorized as non-depressed (a CES-D <8, reference) or depression (CES-D ≥16). HS was diagnosed by ultrasonography. Liver fibrosis was assessed by the fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4). Parametric proportional hazards models were used to estimate the adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: during a median follow-up of 4.0 years, 27,810 people with incident HS and 134 with incident HS plus high FIB-4 were identified. Compared with the non-depressed category, the aHR (95% CIs) for incident HS was 1.24 (1.15-1.34) for CES-D ≥16 among obese individuals, and 1.00 (0.95-1.05) for CES-D ≥16 among non-obese individuals (P for interaction with obesity <0.001). The aHR (95% CIs) for developing HS plus high FIB-4 was 3.41 (1.33-8.74) for CES-D≥16 among obese individuals, and 1.22 (0.60-2.47) for CES-D≥16 among non-obese individuals (P for interaction =0.201). Conclusions: depression was associated with an increased risk of incident HS and HS plus high probability of advanced fibrosis, especially among obese individuals

Background: The effects of glycemic status and insulin resistance on lung cancer remain unclear. We investigated the associations between both glycemic status and insulin resistance, and lung cancer mortality, in a young and middle-aged population with and without diabetes. Methods: This cohort study involved individuals who participated in routine health examinations. Lung cancer mortality was identified using national death records. Cox-proportional hazards models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% CIs for lung cancer mortality risk. Results: Among 666,888 individuals (mean age 39.9±10.9 years) followed for 8.3 years (interquartile range, 4.6–12.7), 602 lung cancer deaths occurred. Among individuals without diabetes, the multivariable-adjusted HRs (95% CI) for lung cancer mortality comparing hemoglobin A1c categories (5.7–5.9, 6.0–6.4, and ≥ 6.5% or 36–38, 39–46, and ≥ 48 mmol/mol, respectively) with the reference (< 5.7% or < 36 mmol/mol) were 1.39 (1.13–1.71), 1.72 (1.33–2.20), and 2.22 (1.56–3.17), respectively. Lung cancer mortality was associated with fasting blood glucose categories in a dose-response manner (P for trend = 0.001) and with previously diagnosed diabetes. Insulin resistance (HOMA-IR ≥ 2.5) in individuals without diabetes was also associated with lung cancer mortality (multivariable-adjusted HR, 1.41; 95% CI, 1.13–1.75). These associations remained after adjusting for changing status in glucose, hemoglobin A1c, insulin resistance, smoking status, and other confounders during follow-up as time-varying covariates. Conclusions: Glycemic status within both diabetes and prediabetes ranges and insulin resistance were independently associated with an increased risk of lung cancer mortality. Gateway RFP-fusion vectors for high-throughput functional analysis of genes

Get PDF
There is an increasing demand for high throughput (HTP) methods for gene analysis on a genome-wide scale. However, the current repertoire of HTP detection methodologies allows only a limited range of cellular phenotypes to be studied. We have constructed two HTP-optimized expression vectors generated from the red fluorescent reporter protein (RFP) gene. These vectors produce RFP-tagged target proteins in a multiple expression system using gateway cloning technology (GCT). The RFP tag was fused with the cloned genes, thereby allowing us localize the expressed proteins in mammalian cells. The effectiveness of the vectors was evaluated using an HTP-screening system. Sixty representative human C2 domains were tagged with RFP and overexpressed in HiB5 neuronal progenitor cells, and we studied in detail two C2 domains that promoted the neuronal differentiation of HiB5 cells. Our results show that the two vectors developed in this study are useful for functional gene analysis using an HTP-screening system on a genome-wide scale. We appreciate the helpful advice of Dr. Tobias Meyer and Dr. Won Do Heo of Stanford University in the construction of the set of entry clones of human C2 domains.
