A statistics-based sensor selection scheme for continuous probabilistic queries in sensor networks
An approach to improve the reliability of query results based on error-prone sensors is to use redundant sensors. However, this approach is expensive; moreover, some sensors may malfunction and their readings need to be discarded. In this paper, we propose a statistical approach to decide which sensors to be used to answer a query. In particular, we propose to solve the problem with the aid of continuous probabilistic query (CPQ), which is originally used to manage uncertain data and is associated with a probabilistic guarantee on the query result. Based on the historical data values from the sensors, the query type, and the requirement on the query, we present methods to select an appropriate set of sensors and provide reliable answers for aggregate queries. Our algorithm is demonstrated in simulation experiments to provide accurate and robust query results. © 2005 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe 11th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Real-Time Computing Systems and Applications (RTCSA 2005), Hong Kong, China, 17-19 August 2005. Effect of Texture on Ultrasonic Backscattering Coefficient in Pure Titanium Plate
Ultrasonic grain noise is one of the important factors which limit the detectability of small defects. The intensity of the grain noise may be represented by the ultrasonic backscattering coefficient which directly relates microstructure to the grain noise intensity. Various microstructures affect the backscattering coefficient, as reported in previous volumes of this series of proceedings1–3. In the present article, the effect of texture will be quantitatively discussed.</p
Wind-induced vibration analysis of the Hong Kong Ting Kau Bridge
Because of their high flexibility and relatively low structural damping, long-span bridges are prone to wind-induced vibration. An efficient wind field simulation technique for wind-induced vibration analysis of long-span bridges is first introduced in this paper. The time-domain expressions for the buffeting and self-excited forces acting on long-span bridges can then be found from the wind velocities. Based on the above theory and the aerodynamic parameters obtained by wind tunnel tests, a study of the wind fluctuations and aerodynamic forces is carried out on the Hong Kong Ting Kau Bridge, which is a cable-stayed bridge comprising two main spans and two side spans. The buffeting response of the bridge is analysed in the time domain by using step-by-step numerical integration techniques. The aerodynamic behaviour of the bridge can therefore be obtained, and the safety performance of the bridge against strong wind can further be evaluated. Numerical results basically agree with the experimental data, indicating that the theory presented in this paper is applicable to engineering practice.published_or_final_versio

Genome maps across 26 human populations reveal population-specific patterns of structural variation.
Large structural variants (SVs) in the human genome are difficult to detect and study by conventional sequencing technologies. With long-range genome analysis platforms, such as optical mapping, one can identify large SVs (>2 kb) across the genome in one experiment. Analyzing optical genome maps of 154 individuals from the 26 populations sequenced in the 1000 Genomes Project, we find that phylogenetic population patterns of large SVs are similar to those of single nucleotide variations in 86% of the human genome, while ~2% of the genome has high structural complexity. We are able to characterize SVs in many intractable regions of the genome, including segmental duplications and subtelomeric, pericentromeric, and acrocentric areas. In addition, we discover ~60 Mb of non-redundant genome content missing in the reference genome sequence assembly. Our results highlight the need for a comprehensive set of alternate haplotypes from different populations to represent SV patterns in the genome
Potential of Biochar Production from Agriculture Residues at Household Scale: A Case Study in Go Cong Tay District, Tien Giang Province, Vietnam
This study was conducted in Go Cong Tay district (Tien Giang province, Vietnam) to estimate the potential of using residue from rice production, particularly, rice straw, to produce biochar at household scale. The annual rice yield of Go Cong Tay district is 185,072 tons/year. It creates about 233,190 tons of rice straw per year. Currently, most of these residues are open burned by the farmers. This study examined the experimental biochar production in different modes of combustion (6 h, 10 h and 15 h). The results show that 6 h of combustion is the best condition due to high yield of biochar, less ash and low amounts of incompleted biochar. With 100 kg of rice straw sticks, 48.25 ± 2.25 kg of biochar was produced. The amount of ash and incompleted biochar was low, 0.75 ± 0.13 kg and 3.95 ± 1.33 kg, respectively. The thermal energy of biochar from rice straw is about 4,030 kcal/kg, which is higher than other similar materials such as chaff, sawdust, etc. The suggested model of biochar production is compatible with household scale due to the short time of combustion, high productivity and the method is easy to perform. This practice reduces agricultural waste, protects soil and creates useful thermal energy for household activities (e.g., cooking). The ash created from biochar production can be used for fertilizing
Cardiovascular outcomes in breast cancer survivors:a systematic review and meta-analysis
Aims It is unclear whether the future risk of cardiovascular events in breast cancer (BC) survivors is greater than in the general population. This meta-analysis quantifies the risk of cardiovascular disease development in BC patients, compared to the risk in a general matched cancer-free population, and reports the incidence of cardiovascular events in patients with BC.Methods and results We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases (up to 23 March 2022) for observational studies and post hoc analyses of randomized controlled trials. Cardiovascular death, heart failure (HF), atrial fibrillation (AF), coronary artery disease (CAD), myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke were the individual endpoints for our meta-analysis. We pooled incidence rates (IRs) and risk in hazard ratios (HRs), using random-effects meta-analyses. Heterogeneity was reported through the I 2 statistic, and publication bias was examined using funnel plots and Egger’s test in the meta-analysis of risk. One hundred and forty-two studies were identified in total, 26 (836 301 patients) relevant to the relative risk and 116 (2 111 882 patients) relevant to IRs. Compared to matched cancer-free controls, BC patients had higher risk for cardiovascular death within 5 years of cancer diagnosis [HR = 1.09; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.07, 1.11], HF within 10 years (HR = 1.21; 95% CI: 1.1, 1.33), and AF within 3 years (HR = 1.13; 95% CI: 1.05, 1.21). The pooled IR for cardiovascular death was 1.73 (95% CI 1.18, 2.53), 4.44 (95% CI 3.33, 5.92) for HF, 4.29 (95% CI 3.09, 5.94) for CAD, 1.98 (95% CI 1.24, 3.16) for MI, 4.33 (95% CI 2.97, 6.30) for stroke of any type, and 2.64 (95% CI 2.97, 6.30) for ischaemic stroke. Conclusion Breast cancer exposure was associated with the increased risk for cardiovascular death, HF, and AF. The pooled incidence for cardiovascular endpoints varied depending on population characteristics and endpoint studied.</p
Anomalous coupling effects in exclusive radiative B-meson decays
The top-quark FCNC processes will be searched for at the CERN LHC, which are
correlated with the B-meson decays. In this paper, we study the effects of
top-quark anomalous interactions in the exclusive radiative and decays. With the current experimental data of
the branching ratios, the direct CP and the isospin asymmetries, bounds on the
coupling from and
from decays are derived,
respectively. The bound on from is generally compatible with that from . However, the isospin asymmetry further
restrict the phase of , and the combined bound results
in the upper limit, , which is lower than the
CDF result. For real , the upper bound on is about of the same order as the discovery
potential of ATLAS with an integrated luminosity of . For
decays, the NP contribution is enhanced by a large CKM factor
, and the constraint on coupling is rather
restrictive, . With refined
measurements to be available at the LHCb and the future super-B factories, we
can get close correlations between and the rare
decays, which will be studied directly at the LHC ATLAS and CMS.Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures, pdflate
Difference of clinical features in childhood Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>M. pneumoniae </it>pneumonia (MP) has been reported in 10-40% of community-acquired pneumonia cases. We aimed to evaluate the difference of clinical features in children with MP, according to their age and chest radiographic patterns.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The diagnosis of MP was made by examinations at both admission and discharge and by two serologic tests: the indirect microparticle agglutinin assay (≥1:40) and the cold agglutinins titer (≥1:32). A total of 191 children with MP were grouped by age: ≤2 years of age (29 patients), 3-5 years of age (81 patients), and ≥6 years of age (81 patients). They were also grouped by pneumonia pattern: bronchopneumonia group (96 patients) and segmental/lobar pneumonia group (95 patients).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Eighty-six patients (45%) were seroconverters, and the others showed increased antibody titers during hospitalization. Among the three age groups, the oldest children showed the longest duration of fever, highest C-reactive protein (CRP) values, and the most severe pneumonia pattern. The patients with segmental/lobar pneumonia were older and had longer fever duration and lower white blood cell (WBC) and lymphocyte counts, compared with those with bronchopneumonia. The patient group with the most severe pulmonary lesions had the most prolonged fever, highest CRP, highest rate of seroconverters, and lowest lymphocyte counts. Thrombocytosis was observed in 8% of patients at admission, but in 33% of patients at discharge.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In MP, older children had more prolonged fever and more severe pulmonary lesions. The severity of pulmonary lesions was associated with the absence of diagnostic IgM antibodies at presentation and lymphocyte count. Short-term paired IgM serologic test may be mandatory for early and definitive diagnosis of MP.</p
The seesaw mechanism at TeV scale in the 3-3-1 model with right-handed neutrinos
We implement the seesaw mechanism in the 3-3-1 model with right-handed
neutrinos. This is accomplished by the introduction of a scalar sextet into the
model and the spontaneous violation of the lepton number. We identify the
Majoron as a singlet under symmetry, which makes it
safe under the current bounds imposed by electroweak data. The main result of
this work is that the seesaw mechanism works already at TeV scale with the
outcome that the right-handed neutrino masses lie in the electroweak scale, in
the range from MeV to tens of GeV. This window provides a great opportunity to
test their appearance at current detectors, though when we contrast our results
with some previous analysis concerning detection sensitivity at LHC, we
conclude that further work is needed in order to validate this search.Comment: about 13 pages, no figure
