Development of gas-pressure bonding process for air-cooled turbine blades

An investigation was conducted on the application of gas-pressure bonding to the joining of components for convectively cooled turbine blades and vanes. A processing procedure was established for joining the fins of Udimet 700 and TD NiCr sheet metal airfoil shells to cast B1900 struts without the use of internal support tooling. Alternative methods employing support tooling were investigated. Testing procedures were developed and employed to determine shear strengths and internal burst pressures of flat and cylindrical bonded finned shell configurations at room temperature and 1750 F. Strength values were determined parallel and transverse to the cooling fin direction. The effect of thermal cycles from 1750 F to room temperature on strength was also investigated

Protein-mediated DNA Loop Formation and Breakdown in a Fluctuating Environment

Living cells provide a fluctuating, out-of-equilibrium environment in which genes must coordinate cellular function. DNA looping, which is a common means of regulating transcription, is very much a stochastic process; the loops arise from the thermal motion of the DNA and other fluctuations of the cellular environment. We present single-molecule measurements of DNA loop formation and breakdown when an artificial fluctuating force, applied to mimic a fluctuating cellular environment, is imposed on the DNA. We show that loop formation is greatly enhanced in the presence of noise of only a fraction of kBTk_B T, yet find that hypothetical regulatory schemes that employ mechanical tension in the DNA--as a sensitive switch to control transcription--can be surprisingly robust due to a fortuitous cancellation of noise effects

IIn the final qualifying work, an analysis of methods of studying the human brain was carried out. Electroencephalography was chosen as the main method for recording bioelectrical activity with nanosensors. The developer is an electroencephalograph for studying the human brain in the extended frequency range (0-10000 Hz), which allows obtaining additional information on the detected bioelectric potentials and EEG rhythms. A study was conducted to assess the psychoemotional state of a person and study to confirm the possibility of using the developed electroencephalograph as an electroneuromiograph
