Optimal solutions for complex design problems: Using isoperformance software for human factors trade offs
A major application of isoperformance is as a trade-off methodology of the three major drivers of system design; equipment, training variables, and user characteristics. The flexibility of isoperformance allows each of these three components to be nearly any rational variation. For example, aptitude may be military Armed Forces Qualification Testing (AFQT) categories, cutoff scores within a selection procedure, or simply dichotomizing high and low scorers (pass/fail). Equipment may be new versus old, 'smart' versus dumb, high versus low resolution, etc. Training may be short versus long or varieties of media types (lecture versus CAI/CBI versus self-paced workbooks). In its final computerized form isoperformance lets the user set an operational level of performance (e.g., a jet pilot in a simulated emergency must take prescribed corrective action and clear the plane in several seconds, pilot astronauts will check out all shuttle flight systems within 30 minutes, or Mission Specialists must handle sucdessfully a required number of job elements). At this point the computer program guides the user through any requested trade-offs of the three components while maintaining the specified operational level of performance through isoperformance curves. On the stability analysis of periodic sine-Gordon traveling waves
We study the spectral stability properties of periodic traveling waves in the
sine-Gordon equation, including waves of both subluminal and superluminal
propagation velocities as well as waves of both librational and rotational
types. We prove that only subluminal rotational waves are spectrally stable and
establish exponential instability in the other three cases. Our proof corrects
a frequently cited one given by Scott.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure
Peeling Bifurcations of Toroidal Chaotic Attractors
Chaotic attractors with toroidal topology (van der Pol attractor) have
counterparts with symmetry that exhibit unfamiliar phenomena. We investigate
double covers of toroidal attractors, discuss changes in their morphology under
correlated peeling bifurcations, describe their topological structures and the
changes undergone as a symmetry axis crosses the original attractor, and
indicate how the symbol name of a trajectory in the original lifts to one in
the cover. Covering orbits are described using a powerful synthesis of kneading
theory with refinements of the circle map. These methods are applied to a

Tolerable versus actual soil erosion rates in Europe
Erosion is a major threat to soil resources in Europe, and may impair their ability to deliver a range of ecosystem goods and services. This is reflected by the European Commission's Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection, which recommends an indicator-based approach for monitoring soil erosion. Defined baseline and threshold values are essential for the evaluation of soil monitoring data. Therefore, accurate spatial data on both soil loss and soil genesis are required, especially in the light of predicted changes in climate patterns, notably frequency, seasonal distribution and intensity of precipitation. Rates of soil loss are reported that have been measured, modelled or inferred for most types of soil erosion in a variety of landscapes, by studies across the spectrum of the Earth sciences. Natural rates of soil formation can be used as a basis for setting tolerable soil erosion rates, with soil formation consisting of mineral weathering as well as dust deposition. This paper reviews the concept of tolerable soil erosion and summarises current knowledge on rates of soil formation, which are then compared to rates of soil erosion by known erosion types, for assessment of soil erosion monitoring at the European scale
