    Software framework for protection relay testing

    A software application is presented in this thesis that was designed to provide the framework for comprehensive automated testing of power system protection relays. This application was implemented using a model protection system that was designed to simulate actual relaying operations performed in the electric power system. The implemented application provided automated testing functionality that performed phase instantaneous over-current protection and phase distance protection testing. The modularity of the implemented software application provides the framework for the automated testing of a relay’s complete protection abilities. Automated testing using this application was performed by driving the outputs of an Omicron CMC 256 relay test set to provide input signals to a GE Multilin D90-Plus Distance Protection System; though the framework is applicable to a wide variety of protective relays

    Filipino Migrant Stories and Trauma in the Transnational Field

    AbstractWe put to work recent efforts to decolonise trauma theory in the context of our experience of writing and performing in the Philippines our testimonial theatre play about Canada's Live-In Caregiver Program (LCP). The play, a collection of monologues based on verbatim scholarly research transcripts, was performed in Manila in November 2013 and October 2014, first as professional and then community theatre. We think through what it means to move a trauma narrative about family separation from Vancouver to Manila, both in terms of the reception of Canadian-based trauma and how it works in relation to traumas based in the Philippines. As a contribution to the geographies of trauma, we consider efforts to think what it would mean to decolonise trauma studies, and examine how trauma narratives gather other narratives as they travel, the politics of scholars from the Global North soliciting and circulating trauma narratives in the Global South, and the possibilities of building collective politics through individual stories of trauma

    Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of psychiatric phenotypes have tended to focus on categorical diagnoses, but to understand the biology of mental illness it may be more useful to study traits which cut across traditional boundaries. Here, we report the results of a GWAS of mood instability as a trait in a large population cohort (UK Biobank, n = 363,705). We also assess the clinical and biological relevance of the findings, including whether genetic associations show enrichment for nervous system pathways. Forty six unique loci associated with mood instability were identified with a SNP heritability estimate of 9%. Linkage Disequilibrium Score Regression (LDSR) analyses identified genetic correlations with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Bipolar Disorder (BD), Schizophrenia, anxiety, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Gene-level and gene set analyses identified 244 significant genes and 6 enriched gene sets. Tissue expression analysis of the SNP-level data found enrichment in multiple brain regions, and eQTL analyses highlighted an inversion on chromosome 17 plus two brain-specific eQTLs. In addition, we used a Phenotype Linkage Network (PLN) analysis and community analysis to assess for enrichment of nervous system gene sets using mouse orthologue databases. The PLN analysis found enrichment in nervous system PLNs for a community containing serotonin and melatonin receptors. In summary, this work has identified novel loci, tissues and gene sets contributing to mood instability. These findings may be relevant for the identification of novel trans-diagnostic drug targets and could help to inform future stratified medicine innovations in mental health

    The SUrvey for Pulsars and Extragalactic Radio Bursts - II. New FRB discoveries and their follow-up

    We report the discovery of four Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) in the ongoing SUrvey for Pulsars and Extragalactic Radio Bursts at the Parkes Radio Telescope: FRBs 150610, 151206, 151230 and 160102. Our real-time discoveries have enabled us to conduct extensive, rapid multimessenger follow-up at 12 major facilities sensitive to radio, optical, X-ray, gamma-ray photons and neutrinos on time-scales ranging from an hour to a few months post-burst. No counterparts to the FRBs were found and we provide upper limits on afterglow luminosities. None of the FRBs were seen to repeat. Formal fits to all FRBs show hints of scattering while their intrinsic widths are unresolved in time. FRB 151206 is at low Galactic latitude, FRB 151230 shows a sharp spectral cut-off, and FRB 160102 has the highest dispersion measure (DM = 2596.1 ± 0.3 pc cm-3) detected to date. Three of the FRBs have high dispersion measures (DM>1500 pc cm-3), favouring a scenario where theDMis dominated by contributions from the intergalactic medium. The slope of the Parkes FRB source counts distribution with fluences >2 Jyms is α = -2.2+0.6 -1.2 and still consistent with a Euclidean distribution (α = -3/2). We also find that the all-sky rate is 1.7+1.5 -0.9 × 103FRBs/(4π sr)/day above ~2 Jy ms and there is currently no strong evidence for a latitude-dependent FRB sky rate

    The SUrvey for Pulsars and Extragalactic Radio Bursts – IV. Discovery and polarimetry of a 12.1-s radio pulsar

    We report the discovery of PSR J2251−3711, a radio pulsar with a spin period of 12.1 seconds, the second longest currently known. Its timing parameters imply a characteristic age of 15 Myr, a surface magnetic field of 1.3 × 1013 G and a spin-down luminosity of 2.9 × 1029 erg s−1. Its dispersion measure of 12.12(1) pc cm−3 leads to distance estimates of 0.5 and 1.3 kpc according to the NE2001 and YMW16 Galactic free electron density models, respectively. Some of its single pulses show an uninterrupted 180 degree sweep of the phase-resolved polarization position angle, with an S-shape reminiscent of the rotating vector model prediction. However, the fact that this sweep occurs at different phases from one pulse to another is remarkable and without straightforward explanation. Although PSR J2251−3711 lies in the region of the P − P˙ parameter space occupied by the X-ray Isolated Neutron Stars (XINS), there is no evidence for an X-ray counterpart in our Swift XRT observation; this places a 99%-confidence upper bound on its unabsorbed bolometric thermal luminosity of 1.1 × 1031 (d/1 kpc)2 ergs-1 for an assumed temperature of 85 eV, where d is the distance to the pulsar. Further observations are needed to determine whether it is a rotation-powered pulsar with a true age of at least several Myr, or a much younger object such as an XINS or a recently cooled magnetar. Extreme specimens like PSR J2251−3711 help bridge populations in the so-called neutron star zoo in an attempt to understand their origins and evolution
