Mechanisms of Impact: An Exploration of Leadership for Sustained World Language Enrollment in U.S. Higher Education

    Get PDF
In response to the pressures of globalization, internationalization has been driving change in higher education over the past decades. Most internationalization frameworks consider world language and intercultural education essential to a 21st-century global education. While many U.S. institutions of higher education (IHEs) are increasingly dependent on tuition revenue, enrollment numbers in language programs across the U.S. declined 15.3% from 2009 to 2016. Given the need for academic departments to generate tuition revenue to remain viable, dwindling world language enrollment in most U.S. higher education institutions is a pressing issue that warrants further investigation. Drawing on both a network theory of group social capital and social network leadership theory, this mixed methods survey-based study of world language department chairs explored the mechanisms that drive student enrollment in postsecondary language programs within the networked and relational paradigm of 21st-Century higher education. Specifically, this research investigated to what extent entrepreneurial leadership behaviors of academic department chairs and the accumulation of social capital within networks that include of an institution’s internal and external stakeholders affect enrollment in their programs, and whether social network leadership and P-12 outreach form suitable strategies to maximize relevance and visibility of the unit. The final sample comprised 1,311 world language departments at 923 IHEs across the United States; a total of 283 valid survey responses from department leaders were received. The findings indicated that enrollment in language programs is affected by complex dynamics that include “a host of non-system actors or intermediaries who play roles in the spread of knowledge, information, and other resources” (Mamas & Daly, 2019 p. 45). This research aimed to shift the focus of inquiry from a traditional upper leadership perspective to the department level and investigate the impact of social networking on departmental viability. It further bridges the gap between secondary and postsecondary education and may inform leaders at both P-12 schools and IHEs as to the significance of school-university partnerships and provide ways for leaders to build social capital for their programs

Sildenafil dosed concomitantly with bosentan for adult pulmonary arterial hypertension in a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND: Few controlled clinical trials exist to support oral combination therapy in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). METHODS: Patients with PAH (idiopathic [IPAH] or associated with connective tissue disease [APAH-CTD]) taking bosentan (62.5 or 125 mg twice daily at a stable dose for ≥3 months) were randomized (1:1) to sildenafil (20 mg, 3 times daily; n = 50) or placebo (n = 53). The primary endpoint was change from baseline in 6-min walk distance (6MWD) at week 12, assessed using analysis of covariance. Patients could continue in a 52-week extension study. An analysis of covariance main-effects model was used, which included categorical terms for treatment, baseline 6MWD (<325 m; ≥325 m), and baseline aetiology; sensitivity analyses were subsequently performed. RESULTS: In sildenafil versus placebo arms, week-12 6MWD increases were similar (least squares mean difference [sildenafil-placebo], -2.4 m [90% CI: -21.8 to 17.1 m]; P = 0.6); mean ± SD changes from baseline were 26.4 ± 45.7 versus 11.8 ± 57.4 m, respectively, in IPAH (65% of population) and -18.3 ± 82.0 versus 17.5 ± 59.1 m in APAH-CTD (35% of population). One-year survival was 96%; patients maintained modest 6MWD improvements. Changes in WHO functional class and Borg dyspnoea score and incidence of clinical worsening did not differ. Headache, diarrhoea, and flushing were more common with sildenafil. CONCLUSIONS: Sildenafil, in addition to stable (≥3 months) bosentan therapy, had no benefit over placebo for 12-week change from baseline in 6MWD. The influence of PAH aetiology warrants future study

Pulse localization and Fourier analysis in the mathematical model of acoustic transient field

    Get PDF
The numerical model of a semi-cylindrical acoustic diffuser in planar transient acoustic field is discussed. The finite element method was used for the solution of the model. From the computed waveforms the straight and the reflected pulses were automatically extracted using cross-correlation. The harmonic decomposition was performed on the obtained pulses and the results were plotted in the polar pattern

The Georgia Seal of Biliteracy: Exploring the Nexus of Politics and Language Education

    Get PDF
On May 3, 2016, House Bill (HB) 879—the Georgia Seal of Biliteracy—was signed into law by Governor Nathan Deal and went into effect on July 1, 2016. Outside of the language education sphere, many educators and policymakers may not fully understand the benefits of studying other languages. Yet, this policy hinges on the utility of simultaneously demonstrating proficiency in a foreign language and an advanced command of English, thus forming the foundation of biliteracy. This article provides an overview of the political landscape in Georgia as it pertains to language education and analyzes how lawmakers translated the issues at hand into specific goals for the Seal of Biliteracy. The paper concludes with four policy proposals to improve the implementation of the legislation and provide suggestions for enhancing pending legislation elsewhere

Measurements and Monte-Carlo simulations of the particle self-shielding effect of B4C grains in neutron shielding concrete

A combined measurement and Monte-Carlo simulation study was carried out in order to characterize the particle self-shielding effect of B4C grains in neutron shielding concrete. Several batches of a specialized neutron shielding concrete, with varying B4C grain sizes, were exposed to a 2 {\AA} neutron beam at the R2D2 test beamline at the Institute for Energy Technology located in Kjeller, Norway. The direct and scattered neutrons were detected with a neutron detector placed behind the concrete blocks and the results were compared to Geant4 simulations. The particle self-shielding effect was included in the Geant4 simulations by calculating effective neutron cross-sections during the Monte-Carlo simulation process. It is shown that this method well reproduces the measured results. Our results show that shielding calculations for low-energy neutrons using such materials would lead to an underestimate of the shielding required for a certain design scenario if the particle self-shielding effect is not included in the calculations.Comment: This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0

Clasificación supervisada para consulta temática en Twitter

    Get PDF
