    Neurobiological insight into hyperbaric hyperoxia

    Aim: Hyperbaric hyperoxia (HBO) is known to modulate aerobic metabolism, vasoreactivity and blood flow in the brain. Nevertheless, mechanisms underlying its therapeutic effects, especially in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and stroke patients, are debated. The present study aimed at investigating regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) distribution during acute HBO exposure. Methods: Regional cerebral blood flow response was investigated in seven healthy subjects exposed to either normobaric normoxia or HBO with ambient pressure/inspired oxygen pressure of 101/21 and 250/250 kPa respectively. After 40 min at the desired pressure, they were injected a perfusion tracer and subsequently underwent brain single photon emission computed tomography. rCBF distribution changes in the whole brain were assessed by Statistical Parametric Mapping. Results: During HBO, an increased relative rCBF distribution was found in sensory-motor, premotor, visual and posterior cingulate cortices as well as in superior frontal gyrus, middle/inferior temporal and angular gyrus and cerebellum, mainly in the dominant hemisphere. During normobaric normoxia, a higher 99mTc-HMPAO distribution in the right insula and subcortical structures as well as in bilateral hippocampi and anterior cingulated cortex was found. Conclusions: The present study firstly confirmed the rCBF distribution increase during HBO in sensory-motor and visual cortices, and it showed for the first time a higher perfusion tracer distribution in areas encompassed in dorsal attention system and in default mode network. These findings unfold both the externally directed cognition performance improvement related to the HBO and the internally directed cognition states during resting-state conditions, suggesting possible beneficial effects in TBI and stroke patients

    All-Digital Massive MIMO Uplink and Downlink Rates under a Fronthaul Constraint

    We characterize the rate achievable in a bidirectional quasi-static link where several user equipments communicate with a massive multiple-input multiple-output base station (BS). In the considered setup, the BS operates in full-digital mode, the physical size of the antenna array is limited, and there exists a rate constraint on the fronthaul interface connecting the (possibly remote) radio head to the digital baseband processing unit. Our analysis enables us to determine the optimal resolution of the analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters as well as the optimal number of active antenna elements to be used in order to maximize the transmission rate on the bidirectional link, for a given constraint on the outage probability and on the fronthaul rate. We investigate both the case in which perfect channel-state information is available, and the case in which channel-state information is acquired through pilot transmission, and is, hence, imperfect. For the second case, we present a novel rate expression that relies on the generalized mutual-information framework.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    In situ scanning electron microscopy study of fatigue crack propagation

    The fatigue crack propagation rate is influenced by various mechanisms at the very vicinity of the crack tip, e.g., local plasticity and/or creep, microcracking, crack branching, and crack closure induced by plasticity and roughness. To study these mechanisms and their influence on crack propagation rate during different loadings, in situ scanning electron microscope studies have been performed. Throughout the load cycles images were taken and analyzed with an image analysis technique to measure the displacements around the crack tip. The obtained data can be used to determine compliance curves at any point along the crack, crack shapes, and the displacementfield in the crack tip vicinity. The technique has been used to analyze which mechanisms of crack propagation are realized during, e.g., fatigue with overloads, and thermomechanical fatigue. The results were compared with resultsfrom measurements using the direct currentpotential drop technique, and it was found that various load conditions promote different mechanisms for crack propagation.Скорость роста усталостной трещины (РУТ) определяется различными механизмами, реализуемыми в окрестности вершины тре­щины. Для изучения этих механизмов и их влияния на скорость РУТ для различных режимов нагружения были проведены иссле­дования in situ с помощью электронного ска­нирующего микроскопа. Микрофотографии, получаемые во время циклического нагру­жения, анализировались с помощью мето­дики обработки изображений с целью изме­рения перемещений в окрестности вершины трещины. Полученные результаты использо­вались для построения кривых податли­вости для любой точки на линии трещины, определения ее формы и поля перемещений вокруг вершины. По данной методике исследовались механизмы РУТ, реализуемые, в частности, при циклическом нагружении с перегрузками и термомеханической уста­лости. Полученные результаты сравнива­лись с данными измерений по методике падения потенциала. При этом было уста­новлено, что разным условиям нагружения соответствуют различные механизмы РУТ

    Towards mapping the brain connectome in depression: functional connectivity by perfusion SPECT

    Several studies have demonstrated altered brain functional connectivity in the resting state in depression. However, no study investigated interregional networking in patients with persistent depressive disorder (PDD). The aim of this study was to assess differences in brain perfusion distribution and connectivity between large groups of patients and healthy controls. Participants comprised 91 patients with PDD and 65 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Resting-state perfusion was investigated by single photon emission computed tomography and group differences were assessed by Statistical Parametric Mapping. Brain connectivity was explored through a voxel-wise interregional correlation analysis using as covariate of interest the normalized values of clusters of voxels in which perfusion differences were found at group analysis. Significantly increased regional brain perfusion distribution covering a large part of the cerebellum was observed in patients as compared to controls. Patients showed significantly negative functional connectivity between the cerebellar cluster and caudate, bilaterally. This study demonstrated inverse relative perfusion between cerebellum and caudate in PDD. Functional uncoupling may be associated with a dysregulation between the role of cerebellum in action control and of the caudate action selection, initiation and decision making in the patients. The possible impact of the resting-state condition and of mitochondrial impairment are discussed

    Shotgun Phage Display - Selection for Bacterial Receptins or other Exported Proteins

    Shotgun phage display cloning involves construction of libraries from randomly fragmented bacterial chromosomal DNA, cloned genes, or eukaryotic cDNAs, into a phagemid vector. The library obtained consists of phages expressing polypeptides corresponding to all genes encoded by the organism, or overlapping peptides derived from the cloned gene. From such a library, polypeptides with affinity for another molecule can be isolated by affinity selection, panning. The technique can be used to identify bacterial receptins and identification of their minimal binding domain, and but also to identify epitopes recognised by antibodies. In addition, after modification of the phagemid vector, the technique has also been used to identify bacterial extracytoplasmic proteins

    Khovanov-Rozansky Homology and Topological Strings

    We conjecture a relation between the sl(N) knot homology, recently introduced by Khovanov and Rozansky, and the spectrum of BPS states captured by open topological strings. This conjecture leads to new regularities among the sl(N) knot homology groups and suggests that they can be interpreted directly in topological string theory. We use this approach in various examples to predict the sl(N) knot homology groups for all values of N.
