    Introduction: The research about to be reported is one part of a larger research project being conducted at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. The objective of this research program is to attempt to systematically study psychological factors related to peptic ulcer by means of a behaviorally-oriented approach. The problem in this study is a comparison of duodenal ulcer patients and a matched control group of non-ulcer subjects on various measures of reported behaviors of important persons in the early lives of the subjects. The major purpose of these comparisons is to generate hypotheses concerning the etiology of peptic ulcer from the psychological approach

    This study involves the artistic presentation of the concept that: •’Man prostitutes himself and is trapped by his own prostitution. The chief problems of the thesis were the clarification of that concept and its subsequent interpretation in aesthetic form. Formulation of the basic idea demanded an examination of prostitution in its broader aspects. The use of man\u27s talents for base purposes was considered in the areas of public relations, business, corporation operation, art, education and religion. Then consideration was given to the assemblage as an aesthetic communicative device. This discussion involved the level of articulation available to the assemblage, and the emotive use of non-art objects in art work. A series of assemblages were projected to communicate the basic concept. The assemblages were first considered in view of their technical and aesthetic qualities. Their execution was then explored in detail. This exploration involved surface quality, material, the physical scale of the work, and the relation of the parts to the total work. The conclusions derived from this thesis were open-ended but indicated the potential of the assemblage as a method of aesthetic communication or concepts

    The implementation of the changes to the program for Wing Aeroelastic Design and the development of a program to estimate aircraft fuselage weights are described. The equations to implement the modified planform description, the stiffened panel skin representation, the trim loads calculation, and the flutter constraint approximation are presented. A comparison of the wing model with the actual F-5A weight material distributions and loads is given. The equations and program techniques used for the estimation of aircraft fuselage weights are described. These equations were incorporated as a computer code. The weight predictions of this program are compared with data from the C-141

    A comparison of program estimates of wing weight, material distribution. structural loads and elastic deformations with actual Northrop F-5A/B data is presented. Correlation coefficients obtained using data from a number of existing aircraft were computed for use in vehicle synthesis to estimate wing weights. The modifications necessary to adapt the WADES code for use in the ACSYNT program are described. Basic program flow and overlay structure is outlined. An example of the convergence of the procedure in estimating wing weights during the synthesis of a vehicle to satisfy F-5 mission requirements is given. A description of inputs required for use of the WADES program is included

    The detection of tightly closed flaws by nondestructive testing (NDT) methods

    Liquid penetrant, ultrasonic, eddy current and X-radiographic techniques were optimized and applied to the evaluation of 2219-T87 aluminum alloy test specimens in integrally stiffened panel, and weld panel configurations. Fatigue cracks in integrally stiffened panels, lack-of-fusion in weld panels, and fatigue cracks in weld panels were the flaw types used for evaluation. A 2319 aluminum alloy weld filler rod was used for all welding to produce the test specimens. Forty seven integrally stiffened panels containing a total of 146 fatigue cracks, ninety three lack-of-penetration (LOP) specimens containing a total of 239 LOP flaws, and one-hundred seventeen welded specimens containing a total of 293 fatigue cracks were evaluated. Nondestructive test detection reliability enhancement was evaluated during separate inspection sequences in the specimens in the 'as-machined or as-welded', post etched and post proof loaded conditions. Results of the nondestructive test evaluations were compared to the actual flaw size obtained by measurement of the fracture specimens after completing all inspection sequences. Inspection data were then analyzed to provide a statistical basis for determining the flaw detection reliability

    Surface Flow Structure of the Gulf Stream From Composite Imagery and Satellite-Tracked Drifters

    A unique set of coutemporaneous satellite-tracked drifters and five-day composite Advanced Very High Resolution Radionmeter (AVHRR) satellite imagery of the North Atlantic has been analyzed to examine the surface flow structure of the Gulf Stream. The study region was divided into two sections, greater than 37 degrees N and less than 37 degrees N, in order to answer the question of geographic variability. Fractal and spectral analyses methods were applied to the data. Fractal analysis of the Lagrangian trajectories showed a fractal dimension of 1.21 +/- 0.02 with a scaling range of 83 - 343 km. The fractal dimension of the temperature fronts of the composite imagery is similar for the two regions with D = 1.11 +/- 0.01 over a scaling range of 4 - 44 km. Spectral analysis also reports a fairly consistent value for the spectral slope and its scaling range. Therefore, we conclude there is no geographic variability in the data set. A suitable scaling range for this contemporaneous data set is 80 - 200 km which is consistent with the expected physical conditions in the region. Finally, we address the idea of using five-day composite imagery to infer the surface flow of the Gulf Stream. Close analyses of the composite thermal fronts and the Lagrangian drifter trajectories show that the former is not a good indicator of the latter

    Detection of tightly closed flaws by nondestructive testing (NDT) methods in steel and titanium

    X-radiographic, liquid penetrant, ultrasonic, eddy current and magnetic particle testing techniques were optimized and applied to the evaluation of 4340 steel (180 KSI-UTS) and 6Al-4V titanium (STA) alloy specimens. Sixty steel specimens containing a total of 176 fatigue cracks and 60 titanium specimens containing a total of 135 fatigue cracks were evaluated. The cracks ranged in length from .043 cm (0.017 inch) to 1.02 cm (.400 inch) and in depth from .005 cm (.002 inch) to .239 cm (.094 inch) for steel specimens. Lengths ranged from .048 cm (0.019 inch) to 1.03 cm (.407 inch) and depths from 0.010 cm (.004 inch) to .261 cm (0.103 inch) for titanium specimens. Specimen thicknesses were nominally .152 cm (0.060 inch) and 0.635 cm (0.250 inch) and surface finishes were nominally 125 rms. Specimens were evaluated in the "as machined" surface condition, after etch surface and after proof loading in a randomized inspection sequence

    Pathway of histone mRNA degradation: oligouridylation followed by bidirectional decay

    Histone mRNAs are rapidly degraded at the end of S phase or when DNA replication is inhibited. Histone mRNAs end in a conserved stemloop rather than a poly(A) tail. Degradation of histone mRNAs requires the stemloop sequence, which binds the stemloop binding protein (SLBP), active translation of the histone mRNA, and the location of the stemloop close to the termination codon. In this thesis I present evidence that the initial step in histone mRNA degradation is the addition of uridines to the 3' end of the histone mRNA, both after inhibition of DNA replication and at the end of S-phase. Lsm1 is required for histone mRNA degradation and is present in a complex containing SLBP on the 3' end of histone mRNA after inhibition of DNA replication. I cloned degradation intermediates that had been partially degraded from both the 5' and the 3' end. RNA interference (RNAi) experiments demonstrate that both the exosome (3'-5') and 5' to 3' decay pathway components are functionally required for degradation. cRT-PCR experiments corroborate the findings from the functional RNAi experiments by providing direct evidence that individual histone mRNAs are degraded simultaneously 5' to 3' and 3' to 5' when DNA synthesis is inhibited. Finally, I present evidence that SLBP protein expression is required for proper regulation of histone mRNA degradation when DNA synthesis is inhibited, but that the underlying mechanism is due to nuclear retention of properly processed histone mRNA. The latter suggests that one of the critical functions of SLBP in human cells is the proper export of histone mRNA to the cytoplasm
