Scene Coordinate Regression with Angle-Based Reprojection Loss for Camera Relocalization
Image-based camera relocalization is an important problem in computer vision
and robotics. Recent works utilize convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to
regress for pixels in a query image their corresponding 3D world coordinates in
the scene. The final pose is then solved via a RANSAC-based optimization scheme
using the predicted coordinates. Usually, the CNN is trained with ground truth
scene coordinates, but it has also been shown that the network can discover 3D
scene geometry automatically by minimizing single-view reprojection loss.
However, due to the deficiencies of the reprojection loss, the network needs to
be carefully initialized. In this paper, we present a new angle-based
reprojection loss, which resolves the issues of the original reprojection loss.
With this new loss function, the network can be trained without careful
initialization, and the system achieves more accurate results. The new loss
also enables us to utilize available multi-view constraints, which further
improve performance.Comment: ECCV 2018 Workshop (Geometry Meets Deep Learning
Miro clusters regulate ER-mitochondria contact sites and link cristae organization to the mitochondrial transport machinery
Mitochondrial Rho (Miro) GTPases localize to the outer mitochondrial membrane and are
essential machinery for the regulated trafficking of mitochondria to defined subcellular
locations. However, their sub-mitochondrial localization and relationship with other critical
mitochondrial complexes remains poorly understood. Here, using super-resolution fluorescence microscopy, we report that Miro proteins form nanometer-sized clusters along the
mitochondrial outer membrane in association with the Mitochondrial Contact Site and
Cristae Organizing System (MICOS). Using knockout mouse embryonic fibroblasts we show
that Miro1 and Miro2 are required for normal mitochondrial cristae architecture and Endoplasmic Reticulum-Mitochondria Contacts Sites (ERMCS). Further, we show that Miro couples MICOS to TRAK motor protein adaptors to ensure the concerted transport of the two
mitochondrial membranes and the correct distribution of cristae on the mitochondrial
membrane. The Miro nanoscale organization, association with MICOS complex and regulation of ERMCS reveal new levels of control of the Miro GTPases on mitochondrial
functionality
End-to-end 6-DoF Object Pose Estimation through Differentiable Rasterization
Here we introduce an approximated differentiable renderer to refine a 6-DoF pose prediction using only 2D alignment information. To this end, a two-branched convolutional encoder network is employed to jointly estimate the object class and its 6-DoF pose in the scene. We then propose a new formulation of an approximated differentiable renderer to re-project the 3D object on the image according to its predicted pose; in this way the alignment error between the observed and the re-projected object silhouette can be measured. Since the renderer is differentiable, it is possible to back-propagate through it to correct the estimated pose at test time in an online learning fashion. Eventually we show how to leverage the classification branch to profitably re-project a representative model of the predicted class (i.e. a medoid) instead. Each object in the scene is processed independently and novel viewpoints in which both objects arrangement and mutual pose are preserved can be rendered.

Examining a staging model for anorexia nervosa: empirical exploration of a four stage model of severity.
Background: An illness staging model for anorexia nervosa (AN) has received increasing attention, but assessing the merits of this concept is dependent on empirically examining a model in clinical samples. Building on preliminary findings regarding the reliability and validity of the Clinician Administered Staging Instrument for Anorexia Nervosa (CASIAN), the current study explores operationalising CASIAN severity scores into stages and assesses their relationship with other clinical features. Method: In women with DSM-IV-R AN and sub-threshold AN (all met AN criteria using DSM 5), receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis (n = 67) assessed the relationship between the sensitivity and specificity of each stage of the CASIAN. Thereafter chi-square and post-hoc adjusted residual analysis provided a preliminary assessment of the validity of the stages comparing the relationship between stage and treatment intensity and AN sub-types, and explored movement between stages after six months (Time 3) in a larger cohort (n = 171). Results: The CASIAN significantly distinguished between milder stages of illness (Stage 1 and 2) versus more severe stages of illness (Stages 3 and 4), and approached statistical significance in distinguishing each of the four stages from one other. CASIAN Stages were significantly associated with treatment modality and primary diagnosis, and CASIAN Stage at Time 1 was significantly associated with Stage at 6 month follow-up. Conclusions: Provisional support is provided for a staging model in AN. Larger studies with longer follow-up of cases are now needed to replicate and extend these findings and evaluate the overall utility of staging as well as optimal staging models
Exoplanet Atmosphere Measurements from Transmission Spectroscopy and other Planet-Star Combined Light Observations
It is possible to learn a great deal about exoplanet atmospheres even when we
cannot spatially resolve the planets from their host stars. In this chapter, we
overview the basic techniques used to characterize transiting exoplanets -
transmission spectroscopy, emission and reflection spectroscopy, and full-orbit
phase curve observations. We discuss practical considerations, including
current and future observing facilities and best practices for measuring
precise spectra. We also highlight major observational results on the
chemistry, climate, and cloud properties of exoplanets.Comment: Accepted review chapter; Handbook of Exoplanets, eds. Hans J. Deeg

The entropy of black holes: a primer
After recalling the definition of black holes, and reviewing their energetics
and their classical thermodynamics, one expounds the conjecture of Bekenstein,
attributing an entropy to black holes, and the calculation by Hawking of the
semi-classical radiation spectrum of a black hole, involving a thermal
(Planckian) factor. One then discusses the attempts to interpret the black-hole
entropy as the logarithm of the number of quantum micro-states of a macroscopic
black hole, with particular emphasis on results obtained within string theory.
After mentioning the (technically cleaner, but conceptually more intricate)
case of supersymmetric (BPS) black holes and the corresponding counting of the
degeneracy of Dirichlet-brane systems, one discusses in some detail the
``correspondence'' between massive string states and non-supersymmetric
Schwarzschild black holes.Comment: 51 pages, 4 figures, talk given at the "Poincare seminar" (Paris, 6

Circulating markers of arterial thrombosis and late-stage age-related macular degeneration: a case-control study.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the relation of late-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with markers of systemic atherothrombosis. METHODS: A hospital-based case-control study of AMD was undertaken in London, UK. Cases of AMD (n=81) and controls (n=77) were group matched for age and sex. Standard protocols were used for colour fundus photography and to classify AMD; physical examination included height, weight, history of or treatment for vascular-related diseases and smoking status. Blood samples were taken for measurement of fibrinogen, factor VIIc (FVIIc), factor VIIIc, prothrombin fragment F1.2 (F1.2), tissue plasminogen activator, and von Willebrand factor. Odds ratios from logistic regression analyses of each atherothrombotic marker with AMD were adjusted for age, sex, and established cardiovascular disease risk factors, including smoking, blood pressure, body mass index, and total cholesterol. RESULTS: After adjustment FVIIc and possibly F1.2 were inversely associated with the risk of AMD; per 1 standard deviation increase in these markers the odds ratio were, respectively, 0.62 (95% confidence interval 0.40, 0.95) and 0.71 (0.46, 1.09). None of the other atherothrombotic risk factors appeared to be related to AMD status. There was weak evidence that aspirin is associated with a lower risk of AMD. CONCLUSIONS: This study does not provide strong evidence of associations between AMD and systematic markers of arterial thrombosis, but the potential effects of FVIIc, and F1.2 are worthy of further investigation
AdS_3/LCFT_2 - Correlators in Cosmological Topologically Massive Gravity
For cosmological topologically massive gravity at the chiral point we
calculate momentum space 2- and 3-point correlators of operators in the
postulated dual CFT on the cylinder. These operators are sourced by the bulk
and boundary gravitons. Our correlators are fully consistent with the proposal
that cosmological topologically massive gravity at the chiral point is dual to
a logarithmic CFT. In the process we give a complete classification of
normalizable and non-normalizeable left, right and logarithmic solutions to the
linearized equations of motion in global AdS_3.Comment: 39 pages + appendices, 1 eps figure, v2: minor changes in text in
