    Cephalometric determinants of successful functional appliance therapy

    This retrospective study was undertaken to determine the presence of any features on a pretreatment lateral cephalogram that may be used to predict the success of improvement in the sagittal dental base relationship during functional appliance therapy in patients with a Class II skeletal pattern. Seventy-two patients judged to have been successfully treated with a functional appliance were selected for the study. Pre- and posttreatment radiographs were analyzed and the change in the ANB angle was used to determine the skeletal response to treatment. Within the total sample size of 72 patients, two groups were selected. One group of 13 patients who demonstrated a reduction in ANB angle of 3.0° or more were identified as the skeletal group. A second group of 15 patients who demonstrated a change in ANB angle equal to or less than 0.5° were identified as the nonskeletal group. Statistical analysis of these two groups revealed the presence of skeletal and dentoalveolar differences on the pretreatment lateral cephalogram. In the skeletal group, which responded with a favorable skeletal change, the mandible was smaller both in length (P < .01) and ramus height (P < .05) and the anterior and posterior lower face heights were smaller (P < .05). The cranial base was also smaller when compared with the respective lengths in the nonskeletal group

    Selenium nanoparticles as candidates for antibacterial substitutes and supplements against multidrug-resistant bacteria

    In recent years, multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria have increased rapidly, representing a major threat to human health. This problem has created an urgent need to identify alternatives for the treatment of MDR bacteria. The aim of this study was to identify the antibacterial activity of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and selenium nanowires (SeNWs) against MDR bacteria and assess the potential synergistic effects when combined with a conventional antibiotic (linezolid). SeNPs and SeNWs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), zeta potential, and UV-visible analysis. The antibacterial effects of SeNPs and SeNWs were confirmed by the macro-dilution minimum inhibi-tory concentration (MIC) test. SeNPs showed MIC values against methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA), methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA), and vanco-mycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) at concentrations of 20, 80, 320, and >320 Îźg/mL, respectively. On the other hand, SeNWs showed a MIC value of >320 Îźg/mL against all tested bacteria. Therefore, MSSA, MRSA, and VRSA were selected for the bacteria to be tested, and SeNPs were selected as the antimicrobial agent for the following experiments. In the time-kill assay, SeNPs at a concentration of 4X MIC (80 and 320 Îźg/mL) showed bactericidal effects against MSSA and MRSA, respectively. At a concentration of 2X MIC (40 and 160 Îźg/mL), SeNPs showed bacteriostatic effects against MSSA and bactericidal effects against MRSA, respectively. In the synergy test, SeNPs showed a synergistic effect with linezolid (LZD) through protein degradation against MSSA and MRSA. In conclusion, these results suggest that SeNPs can be candidates for antibacterial substitutes and supplements against MDR bacteria for topical use, such as dressings. However, for use in clinical situations, additional experiments such as toxicity and synergistic mechanism tests of SeNPs are needed

    Combined Effects of Nanoroughness and Ions Produced by Electrodeposition of Mesoporous Bioglass Nanoparticle for Bone Regeneration

    Providing appropriate biophysical and biochemical cues to the interface is a facile strategy to enhance the osteogenic ability of metallic implants. Here we exploited this through the incorporation of mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGN) at a high content (1:1 by weight) to a biopolymer chitosan in the electrodeposition process of titanium. The MGBN/chitosan layer thickness, tunable by electrodeposition parameters, exhibited an accelerated ability of apatite mineral induction in a body simulating medium. Of note, the involvement of MBGN could generate nanoscale roughness in a unique range of 10-25 nm. Moreover, the layer showed a slowly releasing profile of ions (calcium and silicate) over weeks at therapeutically relevant doses. The ion-releasing nanotopological surface was demonstrated to alter the preosteoblasts responses in a way favorable for osteogenic differentiation. The combinatory cues of nanotopology (25 nm roughness) and ion release enabled highly accelerated cellular anchorage with somewhat limited spreading area at initial periods. The subsequent osteoblastic differentiation behaviors on the engineered surface, as examined up to 21 days, showed significantly enhanced alkaline phosphate activity and up-regulated expression of bone-associated genes (ALP, Col I, OPN, and OCN). These results indicate that the combinatory cues provided by nanotopology (25 nm roughness) and ions released from MBGN are highly effective in stimulating osteoblastic differentiation and suggest that the MBGN/chitosan may serve as a potential composition for bone implant coatings

    Quality and readability of online patient information regarding sclerotherapy for venous malformations

    BACKGROUND: Patients often use the internet as a source of information about their condition and treatments. However, this information is unregulated and varies in quality. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the readability and quality of online information for pediatric and adult patients and caregivers regarding sclerotherapy for venous malformations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: “Venous malformation sclerotherapy” was entered into Google, and results were reviewed until 20 sites that satisfied predefined inclusion criteria were identified. Scientific and non-patient-focused web pages were excluded. Readability was assessed using the Flesch Reading Ease Score and American Medical Association reading difficulty recommendations and quality was assessed using Journal of the American Medical Association standards and assessing if the site displayed HONcode (Health on the Net Code) certification. Assessment of the breadth of relevant information was made using a predefined checklist. RESULTS: Forty-nine search engine results were reviewed before 20 sites were identified for analysis. Average Flesch Reading Ease Score was 44 (range: 24.2–70.1), representing a “fairly difficult” reading level. None of the sites had a Flesch Reading Ease Score meeting the American Medical Association recommendation of 80-90. Only one site met all four Journal of the American Medical Association quality criteria (average: 2.1). None of the sites displayed a HONcode seal. The information most frequently found was: sclerotherapy is performed by radiologists, multiple treatments may be needed and surgery is an alternative treatment. CONCLUSION: Online information regarding sclerotherapy for venous malformations is heterogeneous in quality and breadth of information, and does not meet readability recommendations for patient information. Radiologists should be aware of and account for this when meeting patients

    Top pair Asymmetries at Hadron colliders with general Z′Z' couplings

    Recently it has been shown that measurement of charge asymmetry of top pair production at LHC excludes any flavor violating Z′Z' vector gauge boson that could explain Tevatron forward-backward asymmetry (FBA). We consider the general form of a Z′Z' gauge boson including left-handed, right-handed vector and tensor couplings to examine FBA and charge asymmetry. To evaluate top pair asymmetries at Tevatron and LHC, we consider Bq0B^0_q mixing constraints on flavor changing Z′Z' couplings and show that this model still explain forward-backward asymmetry at Tevatron and charge asymmetry can not exclude it in part of parameters space.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

    Loss of neuronal Miro1 disrupts mitophagy and induces hyperactivation of the integrated stress response

    Clearance of mitochondria following damage is critical for neuronal homeostasis. Here, we investigate the role of Miro proteins in mitochondrial turnover by the PINK1/Parkin mitochondrial quality control system in vitro and in vivo. We find that upon mitochondrial damage, Miro is promiscuously ubiquitinated on multiple lysine residues. Genetic deletion of Miro or block of Miro1 ubiquitination and subsequent degradation lead to delayed translocation of the E3 ubiquitin ligase Parkin onto damaged mitochondria and reduced mitochondrial clearance in both fibroblasts and cultured neurons. Disrupted mitophagy in vivo, upon post-natal knockout of Miro1 in hippocampus and cortex, leads to a dramatic increase in mitofusin levels, the appearance of enlarged and hyperfused mitochondria and hyperactivation of the integrated stress response (ISR). Altogether, our results provide new insights into the central role of Miro1 in the regulation of mitochondrial homeostasis and further implicate Miro1 dysfunction in the pathogenesis of human neurodegenerative disease

    Hepatitis B Virus Genotyping Among Chronic Hepatitis B Individuals With Resistance to Lamivudine in Shahrekord, Iran

    Background: Hepatitis B infection, caused by hepatitis B Virus (HBV), is one of the major global public health problems. Hepatitis B Virus genotypes appear to show varying geographic distribution with possible pathogenic and therapeutic differences. Knowledge of HBV genotypes is very important for clinical treatment. Lamivudine is a nucleoside analogue that is clinically used to treat chronic hepatitis B infection. However, the main problem with the application of lamivudine is the development of viral resistance to the treatment with this anti viral drug. Besides, it has been suggested that lamivudine-resistant HBV may be genotype dependent. However, HBV genotype distribution and the biological relevance in this region are poorly understood. Objectives: The current study aimed to determine hepatitis B genotypes and their correlation with lamivudine-resistant HBV frequency among patients with chronic hepatitis B from Shahrekord, Iran. Methods and Materials: Hepatitis B virus DNA was detected by conventional PCR in some of the serum samples obtained from HBsAg-positive Chronic Hepatitis B (CHB) patients who were referred to Health Centers of Shahrekord for routine monitoring of the disease. Subsequently, using real-time PCR, the DNA samples were used for genotyping and analysis of resistance to lamivudine. Results: The DNA was detected in 23 out of 116 (19.82%) of the studied samples. Genotypes D and C were found in 17 out of 23 (73.9%), and in 6 out of 23 (26.1%) of the samples, respectively. To the authors' best knowledge, the current study is the first report on isolation of Genotype C from Iran. Two out of 17 (11.76%), and 6 out of 6 (100%) of genotypes D and C were resistant to lamivudine, respectively. Resistance to this drug was significantly different between genotypes C and D (P < 0.001). Conclusions: In addition to genotype D, other lamivudine resistant hepatitis B genotypes might be distributed in Iran
