    On average, one in four adults has hypertension.1 This figure is higher in certain regions of the world, and in certain areas within countries. Worldwide, however, the prevalence of hypertension is on the rise. The relationship between level of blood pressure and risk for cardiovascular events is linear and continuous.Nearly 75% of adults with other cardiovascular disease have hypertension as a comorbidity. Hypertension is associated with shorter overall life expectancy, as well as a shorter life expectancy free of cardiovascular disease. Hypertension can be said to be controlled or at goal if blood pressure is less than 140/90 mmHg, or less than 130/80 mmHg for those with diabetes, kidney disease or a previous vascular event (e.g. myocardial infarction, stroke, etc)

    The cosmic evolution of radio-AGN feedback to z=1

    This paper presents the first measurement of the radio luminosity function of 'jet-mode' (radiatively-inefficient) radio-AGN out to z=1, in order to investigate the cosmic evolution of radio-AGN feedback. Eight radio source samples are combined to produce a catalogue of 211 radio-loud AGN with 0.5<z<1.0, which are spectroscopically classified into jet-mode and radiative-mode (radiatively-efficient) AGN classes. Comparing with large samples of local radio-AGN from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the cosmic evolution of the radio luminosity function of each radio-AGN class is independently derived. Radiative-mode radio-AGN show an order of magnitude increase in space density out to z~1 at all luminosities, consistent with these AGN being fuelled by cold gas. In contrast, the space density of jet-mode radio-AGN decreases with increasing redshift at low radio luminosities (L_1.4 < 1e24 W/Hz) but increases at higher radio luminosities. Simple models are developed to explain the observed evolution. In the best-fitting models, the characteristic space density of jet-mode AGN declines with redshift in accordance with the declining space density of massive quiescent galaxies, which fuel them via cooling of gas in their hot haloes. A time delay of 1.5-2 Gyr may be present between the quenching of star formation and the onset of jet-mode radio-AGN activity. The behaviour at higher radio luminosities can be explained either by an increasing characteristic luminosity of jet-mode radio-AGN activity with redshift (roughly as (1+z) cubed) or if the jet-mode radio-AGN population also includes some contribution of cold-gas-fuelled sources seen at a time when their accretion rate was low. Higher redshifts measurements would distinguish between these possibilities.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Objectives. The study was conducted to ascertain whether physical education teachers, using a peak flow meter, could reliably screen for exercise-induced asthma (EIA) in children during free running.Design, setting and subjects. The study was conducted using a convenience sample of male pupils between the ages of 12 and 18 years. They were tested with a peak flow meter for peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) and with a flow-volume curve for forced expiratory flow in 1 second (FEV1) before and 10 minutes after a self-paced free running test during physical education classes. Testing was undertaken by teachers using the peak flow meter and by a medical doctor using a flow-volume curve.Results. Using a 10% decrease in flow parameters (PEFR and FEV1), teachers detected EIA in 14.9% of pupils and the doctor detected EIA in 21.7% of pupils.Conclusion. We conclude that EIA is common and that teachers using a peak flow meter can detect EIA and thus screen for it; they do, however, underestimate the true magnitude of the problem

    Determination of the critical stages of processing and tolerance limits for Harmonia axyridis for ‘ladybug taint’ in wine

    'Ladybug taint’ (LBT) has recently been reported in some wines from North America, and is associated with 2-isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine (IPMP), produced by Harmonia axyridis Pallas (the Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle - MALB) when they are incorporated into the winemaking process. It is not known when IPMP is transferred from MALB (e.g. in the vineyard onto grapes or during must processing) nor what minimum MALB densities are required for production of LBT in the final wines. This study sought to clarify these issues through a series of three trials. In the first, MALB were added to 'Riesling' grapes or must at different stages of processing (harvest, crush/destem, pressing or directly to juice), and the resultant wines were analysed chemically and by paired-comparison sensory difference tests.The presence of MALB during processing had minimal effect on the basic composition and spectral properties of the wine. Concentrations of IPMP were &lt; 5 ng·l-1 for all wines except those produced after the direct addition of MALB to the juice (10.3 ng·l-1). Sensorially, control wines (no added MALB) could be differentiated from wines made after MALB were added at crushing/destemming (at 3 beetles per kg grapes), whole bunch pressing and when added directly into the juice, but not when MALB were added and subsequently removed from a simulated harvest treatment or when added during crushing/destemming at 0.3 beetles per kg grapes. In trials 2 and 3, sensory detection thresholds for LBT were determined for white and red wines produced with known densities of MALB. Estimates of ‘tolerance limits’ in the vineyard were then calculated using regression models, and correspond to 1530 and 1260 beetles per t grapes for white and red wines respectively. However, given the range of grape and wine processing options available to producers, many of which are not accounted for in this study, we recommend that a more conservative limit of 200-400 beetles per t grapes may be appropriate. These results should assist in directing appropriate interventions in the vineyard/winery, and provide baseline targets for reducing MALB density to avoid development of LBT.
