After teeth are replanted, there are two possible healing responses: periodontal ligament healing or ankylosis with subsequent replacement resorption. The purpose of this study was to compare the fatigue resistance of vertically fractured teeth after bonding the fragments under conditions simulating both healing modes. Thirty-two human premolars were vertically fractured and the fragments were bonded together with Super-Bond C&B. They were then randomly distributed into four groups (BP, CP, CA, BA). The BP and CP groups were used to investigate the periodontal ligament healing mode whilst the BA and CA groups simulated ankylosis. All teeth had root canal treatment performed. Metal crowns were constructed for the CP and CA groups. The BP and BA groups only had composite resin restorations in the access cavities. All specimens were subjected to a 260 N load at 4 Hz until failure of the bond or until 2Ă—106 cycles had been reached if no fracture occurred. Cracks were detected by stereomicroscope imaging and also assessed via dye penetration tests. Finally, interfaces of the resin luting agent were examined by scanning electron microscope. The results confirmed that the fatigue resistance was higher in the groups with simulated periodontal ligament healing. Periodontal reattachment showed important biomechanical role in bonded and replanted vertically fractured teeth

Methodological considerations concerning the development of oral dental erosion indexes: literature survey, validity and reliability

Within the context of preventing non-communicable diseases, the World Health Report (2002) and the WHO Global Oral Health Program (2003) put forward a new strategy of disease prevention and health promotion. Greater emphasis is placed on developing global policies in oral health promotion and oral disease prevention. The Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth (DMFT) index does not meet new challenges in the field of oral health. Dental erosion seems to be a growing problem, and in some countries, an increase in erosion of teeth is associated with an increase in the consumption of beverages containing acids. Therefore, within a revision of the WHO Oral Health Surveys Basic Methods, new oral disease patterns, e.g. dental erosion, have to be taken into account. Within the last 20 years, many studies on dental erosion have been carried out and published. There has been a rapid growth in the number of indexes quantifying dental erosion process in different age groups. However, these indexes are not comparable. This article discusses quality criteria which an index intended for assessing tooth erosion should possess

Assessment of the pharmacokinetic profile of novel s-triazine derivatives and their potential use in treatment of Alzheimer's disease

© 2016 Elsevier Inc. Aims The current treatment of Alzheimer's disease is purely symptomatic. Scientists are looking for new treatment options which could alter the course of the disease and improve the quality of life in patients with Alzheimer's disease. In this paper 14 novel s-triazine molecules have been evaluated for their lipophilicity. In addition docking study was carried out to evaluate acetylcholinesterase activity of these compounds. Main methods Lipophilicity was evaluated by RP HPTLC using 5 different mobile phases and obtained results were used in calculations of pharmacokinetic parameters - logBB, Ka and Pej. Multiple linear regression analysis was refined, taking account of molecular polarity (total polar surface area, TPSA) and molecular weight (Mw) descriptors. Appropriate QSAR models were developed. Docking studies were carried out using the Vina docking. Key findings Five out of fourteen compounds evaluated [5-10] are selected as the most promising compounds with satisfactory pharmacokinetic properties and good docking scores. Significance Compound 10 possesses the best combination of favourable pharmacokinetic characteristics (brain penetration, intestinal absorption) and capacity for acetylcholinesterase inhibition. Consequently this molecule should be further evaluated for potential therapeutic use in Alzheimer's disease
