    Phylogeny Of Triatoma Sherlocki (hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) Inferred From Two Mitochondrial Genes Suggests Its Location Within The Triatoma Brasiliensis Complex.

    The phylogenetic position of Triatoma sherlocki within triatomines group was inferred by analyzing mtDNA fragments of Cyt B and 16S ribosomal RNA by using maximum parsimony and Bayesian analysis. Despite being differentiated from members of the T. brasiliensis complex on morphologic grounds, molecular phylogenetic analysis suggests T. sherlocki is a member of this complex; moreover, it was placed as a sister species of T. melanica. These suggestions were supported by robust credibility rates. Hence, we show evidence for the paraphyletic group of the Triatoma brasiliensis complex, which should be composed of T. brasiliensis brasiliensis, T. brasiliensis macromelasoma, T. juazeirensis, T. melanica, and T. sherlocki.81858-6

    First isolation of microorganisms from the gut diverticulum of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae): new perspectives for an insect-bacteria association

    We show for the first time that the ventral diverticulum of the mosquito gut (impermeable sugar storage organ) harbors microorganisms. The gut diverticulum from newly emerged and non-fed Aedes aegypti was dissected under aseptic conditions, homogenized and plated on BHI medium. Microbial isolates were identified by sequencing of 16S rDNA for bacteria and 28S rDNA for yeast. A direct DNA extraction from Ae. aegypti gut diverticulum was also performed. The bacterial isolates were: Bacillus sp., Bacillus subtilis and Serratia sp. The latter was the predominant bacteria found in our isolations. The yeast species identified was Pichia caribbica

Berg and Vitex polygama Cham. foram testadas in vitro como inibidores de crescimento do fungo Leucoagaricus gongylophorus (Singer) Möller, simbionte da formiga cortadeira Atta sexdens, e de suas pectinases. Os efeitos dos extratos e compostos também foram avaliados sobre várias bactérias e leveduras similares às espécies que vivem em simbiose com a formiga. Os extratos HA de S. densiflora exibiram os resultados antimicrobianos mais significativos, principalmente contra a Pseudomonas aeruginosa exibiram os resultados antimicrobianos mais significativos, principalmente contra a Pseudomonas aeruginosa. O 6-O Beta-D-glucopiranosídeo de cafeoila foi o composto mais promissor no controle do crescimento do L. gongylophorus.Crude hydroalcoholic extracts (HA) and twelve compounds isolated from Siphoneugena densiflora O. Berg and Vitex polygama Cham. were tested in vitro as growth inhibitors of the fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus (Singer) Möller, that lives in symbiosis with the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens, as well as inhibitors of the fungus’ pectinases. Also, the effects of the extracts and the compounds were assessed in a panel of bacteria and yeasts similar to those living in symbiosis with the ant. HA extracts from S. densiflora displayed significant antimicrobial results, mainly against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Caffeoyl 6-O-β-D-glucopyranoside was the most promising compound in the control of L. gongylophorus growth
