    A Fuzzy Guidance System for Rendezvous and Pursuit of Moving Targets

    This article presents the development of a fuzzy guidance system (FGS) for unmanned aerial vehicles capable of pursuing and performing rendezvous with static and mobile targets. The system is designed to allow the vehicle to approach a maneuvering target from a desired direction of arrival and to terminate the rendezvous at a constant distance from the target. In order to perform a rendezvous with a maneuvering target, the desired direction of arrival is adjusted over time to always approach the target from behind, so that the aircraft and target velocity vectors become aligned. The proposed guidance system assumes the presence of an autopilot and uses a set of Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy controllers to generate the orientation and speed references for the velocity and heading control loops, given the relative position and velocity between the aircraft and the target. The FGS treats the target as a mobile waypoint in a 4-D space (position in 2-dimensions, desired crossing heading and speed) and guides the aircraft on suitable trajectories towards the target. Only when the vehicle is close enough to the rendezvous point, the guidance law is complemented with an additional linear controller to manage the terminal formation keeping phase. The capabilities of the proposed rendezvous-FGS are verified in simulation on both maneuvering and non-maneuvering targets. Finally, experimental results using a multi-rotor aerial system are presented for both fixed and accelerating targets

    Development of a Hybrid Simulator for Underwater Vehicles with Manipulators

    This article describes a hybrid simulation approach meant to facilitate the realization of a simulator for underwater vehicles with one or more manipulators capable of simulating the interaction of the vehicle with objects and structures of the environment. The hybrid simulation approach is first described and motivated analytically, then an analysis of simulation accuracy is proposed, where, in particular, the implications of added mass simulation are discussed. Then, a possible implementation of the proposed architecture is shown, where a robotic simulator of articulated bodies, capable of stable and accurate simulation of contact forces, although unfit to simulate any serious hydrodynamic model, is tightly interfaced with a general purpose dynamic systems simulator that is used to simulate the hydrodynamic forces, the vehicle guidance, navigation, and control system, and also a man-machine interface. Software details and the technicalities needed to interface the two simulators are also briefly presented. Finally, the results of the simulation of three operational scenarios are proposed as qualitative assessment of the simulator capabilities

    Supervised learning of time-independent Hamiltonians for gate design

    We present a general framework to tackle the problem of finding time-independent dynamics generating target unitary evolutions. We show that this problem is equivalently stated as a set of conditions over the spectrum of the time-independent gate generator, thus translating the task into an inverse eigenvalue problem. We illustrate our methodology by identifying suitable time-independent generators implementing Toffoli and Fredkin gates without the need for ancillae or effective evolutions. We show how the same conditions can be used to solve the problem numerically, via supervised learning techniques. In turn, this allows us to solve problems that are not amenable, in general, to direct analytical solution, providing at the same time a high degree of flexibility over the types of gate-design problems that can be approached. As a significant example, we find generators for the Toffoli gate using only diagonal pairwise interactions, which are easier to implement in some experimental architectures. To showcase the flexibility of the supervised learning approach, we give an example of a non-trivial four-qubit gate that is implementable using only diagonal, pairwise interactions

    In Vitro Effects of PTH (1-84) on Human Skeletal Muscle-Derived Satellite Cells

    Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a hormone secreted by the parathyroid glands. Despite its well-known characterized anabolic and catabolic actions on the skeleton, the in vitro effects of PTH on skeletal muscle cells are limited and generally performed on animal models. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a short impulse of PTH (1-84) on the proliferation and the differentiation of skeletal muscle satellite cells isolated from human biopsies. The cells were exposed for 30 min to different concentrations of PTH (1-84), from 10−6 mol/L to 10−12 mol/L. ELISA was used to assay cAMP and the myosin heavy-chain (MHC) protein. The proliferation was assayed by BrdU and the differentiation by RealTime-qPCR. A statistical analysis was performed by ANOVA followed by Bonferroni’s test. No significant variations in cAMP and the proliferation were detected in the isolated cells treated with PTH. On the other hand, 10−7 mol/L PTH on differentiated myotubes has shown significant increases in cAMP (p ≤ 0.05), in the expression of myogenic differentiation genes (p ≤ 0.001), and in the MHC protein (p ≤ 0.01) vs. untreated controls. This work demonstrates for the first time the in vitro effects of PTH (1-84) on human skeletal muscle cells and it opens new fields of investigation in muscle pathophysiology

    Soft Tissue Reconstruction of the Posterior Trunk after Tumor Excision: A Surgical Algorithm

    Background: The posterior trunk has been considered a challenging area to reconstruct following soft tissue tumor excision because of the shortage of local donor sites. The advent of innovative procedures such as perforator flaps has radically changed this perspective and offered a new approach to the problem. Methods: Upon a review of the literature and the personal experiences of the senior author, an algorithm is developed according to the most updated procedure, combined with more conventional options that maintain a role in decision-making. Results: The upper back latissimus dorsi and trapezium flap are still the most reliable approaches, while perforator flaps based either on the circumflex scapular arteries or the transverse cervical artery represent a more refined option. In the middle third, few indications remain for the reverse latissimus dorsi, while the gold standard is represented by local perforator flaps based on the posterior intercostal system. In the lower back, conventional VY advancement flaps are still a safe and effective option in the sacral area, and perforator flaps based on posterior intercostal arteries, lumbar arteries and superior gluteal arteries are the first choice in most cases. Conclusions: Using perforator flaps significantly improved soft tissue reconstruction in the posterior trunk

    Health literacy among non-familial caregivers of older adults: A study conducted in Tuscany (Italy)

    Many older adults who live at home depend on a caregiver. When familial support cannot provide the necessary care, paid caregivers are frequently hired. Health literacy (HL) is the knowledge and competence required of people to meet the complex demands of health in modern society. The aim of this study is to assess the HL level of paid non-familial caregivers who were enrolled through two different sources: from the homes of assisted people in two Tuscan health districts (first sample) and during job interviews in a home care agency operating in Florence (second sample). The two different recruitment contexts allow us to provide a broader view of the phenomenon, presenting a picture of the HL level of those who are already working and those who are looking for a new job in this field. One-on-one face-to-face interviews, which include the administration of the Newest Vital Sign (NVS) to measure HL, were conducted. Recruitment resulted in 84 caregivers in the first sample and 68 in the second sample. In the first sample, the mean age was 51.2 ± 9 years; 94% of the participants were women. A high likelihood or likelihood of inadequate HL (i.e., a low level of HL) was found in 73.8% of cases. In the second sample, the mean age was 43.7 ± 11.5 years; 83.8% of the participants were women, and 80.9% had a low level of HL. In both samples, HL was statistically associated with the level of understanding of the Italian language. In conclusion, inadequate HL is an under-recognized problem among non-familial caregivers. Educational programs that aim to increase HL skills could be an effective approach to improving the qualification of informal healthcare professionals
