Optical conductivity of the Kondo insulator YbB_12: Gap formation and low-energy excitations

    Get PDF
Optical reflectivity experiments have been conducted on single crystals of the Kondo insulator YbB_12 in order to obtain its optical conductivity, \sigma(\omega). Upon cooling below 70 K, a strong supression of \sigma(\omega) is seen in the far-infrared region, indicating the opening of an energy gap of ~ 25 meV. This gap development is coincident with a rapid decrease in the magnetic susceptibility, which shows that the gap opening has significant influence on magnetic properties. A narrow, asymmetric peak is observed at ~40 meV in \sigma(\omega), which is attributed to optical transitions between the Yb 4f-derived states across the gap. In addition, a broad peak is observed at ~0.25 eV. This peak is attributed to transitions between Yb 4f-derived states and p-d band, and is reminiscent of similar peaks previously observed for rare-earth hexaborides.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Get PDF
Vocational High School is course with aim to prepare the students to have specific skills by having practical activities based on its study program. It has the same purpose with English for specific purposes (ESP) course which aims to meet the students’ specific language need. ESP courses help students to use English appropriately as well as accurately to perform their jobs in a various situations where they encounter their English language function. ESP course often begins with the students’ need. Students’ need analysis is needed to be identified to be able to meet the effective learning material based on what the students really need. This study aims to investigate the writing materials needs of eleventh grade students of Office Administration study program in Vocational High School from viewpoints of students. This study used descriptive qualitative analysis with questionnaire and interview method to collect the data. The subjects of the research were eleventh grade of Office Administration students that consisted of 34 students by using purposive sampling. The result indicated that the students have several needs in terms of target needs and learning needs. Target needs are divided into necessities, wants, and lacks. Based on the result of target needs, the students are lack of component of writing skills including express ideas, write with correct organization, use correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling, and use appropriate vocabulary based on the context of the text. Thus, the students need and want to learn those components of writing skills. Meanwhile, learning needs are divided into input, procedure, setting, and accessibility. The input is divided into content of materials, activities, and design. The teachers should pay attention more on those aspects to fulfill the students’ need to help them transition successfully to their future careers after graduation

Energy Spectra and Normalized Power Spectral Densities of X-Ray Nova GS 2000+25

The X-ray energy spectra and Normalized Power Spectral Densities (NPSDs) of an X-ray nova, GS 2000+25, were investigated. The X-ray energy spectra of the source consist of two components: a hard component, which can be represented by a power-law, and an ultra-soft component, represented by radiation from an optically-thick accretion disk (the disk component). In a model in which the power-law component is the Compton-scattered radiation, it is found that the temperature of the incident blackbody radiation to the Compton cloud decrease from 0.8 keV to 0.2 keV according to the decay of the intensity, which coincides with that of the inner accretion disk. When the source changed from the high-state to the low-state, both the photon index of the power-law component (or Compton y-parameter) and the NPSD of the hard component dramatically changed as did GS 1124-683. That is, the photon index changed from 2.2--2.6 to 1.7--1.8 and the absolute values of the NPSDs at 0.3 Hz of the hard component in the low-state became about 10-times larger than those of the hard component in the high-state. These X-ray properties were similar to those of other black-hole candidates, such as Cyg X-1, GX 339-4, and LMC X-3.Comment: 24 pages, text only, Full version is published in PASJ 54, 609-627 (2002

Evidence for short-range antiferromagnetic fluctuations in Kondo-insulating YbB12

    Get PDF
The spin dynamics of mixed-valence YbB12 has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering on a high-quality single crystal. In the Kondo-insulating regime realized at low temperature, the spectra exhibit a spin-gap structure with two sharp, dispersive, in-gap excitations at E = 14.5 and approximately 20 meV. The lower mode is shown to be associated with short-range correlations near the antiferromagnetic wave vector q0 = (1/2, 1/2, 1/2). Its properties are in overall agreement with those expected for a "spin exciton'' branch in an indirect hybridization gap semiconductor.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures ; submitted to Physical Review Letter

This research aims to determine the factors that influence the level of Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosures after International Financial Reporting Standards convergence by testing the effect of Institutional Ownership, Public Ownership, Board of Independent Commissioner Size and Corporate Size on Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosures index. Sample used are mining sector companies that listed on Indonesia Stock Exchange for period 2013-2016. The sources of the data were taken from audited financial reports and annual reports and sample were 19 banks which taken by using purposive sampling. This research uses quantitative approach with multiple linier regression analysis. The results show that institutional ownership, public ownership and corporate size have a positive and significant effect on corporate social responsibility disclosures. There is no evidence to suggest that board of independent commissioner size have any effect on corporate social responsibility disclosures. The results simultaneously show that Institutional Ownership, Public Ownership, Board of Independent Commissioner Size and Corporate Size have an influence on Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosures.&nbsp

Effective Symmetries of the Minimal Supermultiplet of N = 8 Extended Worldline Supersymmetry

A minimal representation of the N = 8 extended worldline supersymmetry, known as the `ultra-multiplet', is closely related to a family of supermultiplets with the same, E(8) chromotopology. We catalogue their effective symmetries and find a Spin(4) x Z(2) subgroup common to them all, which explains the particular basis used in the original construction. We specify a constrained superfield representation of the supermultiplets in the ultra-multiplet family, and show that such a superfield representation in fact exists for all adinkraic supermultiplets. We also exhibit the correspondences between these supermultiplets, their Adinkras and the E(8) root lattice bases. Finally, we construct quadratic Lagrangians that provide the standard kinetic terms and afford a mixing of an even number of such supermultiplets controlled by a coupling to an external 2-form of fluxes.Comment: 13 Figure
