The Relative Effects of Logistics, Coordination and Human Resource on Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief Mission Performance

Most studies on humanitarian aid and disaster relief (HADR) missions suggest that the quality of logistics, coordination and human resource management will affect their performance. However, studies in developing countries are mainly conceptual and lack the necessary empirical evidence to support these contentions. The current paper thereby aimed to fill this knowledge gap by statistically examining the effects of the abovementioned factors on such missions. Focusing on the Malaysian army due to its extensive experience in HADR operations, the paper opted for a quantitative approach to allow for a more objective analysis of the issues. The results show that there are other potential determinants of mission success which deserve due attention in future studies. They also suggest that human resource is not easily measured as a construct, and that this limitation in methodology must be overcome to derive more accurate conclusions regarding its effect on HADR mission performance.&nbsp

Mesoscale numerical approach to predict macroscale fluid flow problems

    Get PDF
We present a detailed analysis of the lattice Boltzmann method to simulate an incompressible fluid flow problem. Thorough derivation of macroscopic hydrodynamics equations from the continuous Boltzmann equation is performed. After showing how the formulation of the mesoscale particle dynamics fits in to the framework of lattice Boltzmann simulations, numerical results of isothermal, thermal and multiphase fluid flow are presented to highlight the applicability of the approach. The objective of the paper is to gain better understanding of this relatively new approach for applied engineering problems in fluid transport phenomena

Determination of effective diffusion coefficient of immobilized Baker's yeast invertase in various concentration of PVA-alginate matrix

    Get PDF
Baker's yeast invertase is immobilized in PVA-alginate matrix using an improved method. PVA beads were prepared by adding calcium alginate to improve its stability, mechanical and chemical properties. Boric acid was used as the cross-linking agent and additional chemicals consisting of 10% boric acid and sodium sulphate solution was used as a treatment solution to harden the PVA-alginate beads. The determination of the effective diffusion of PVA-alginate matrix the vital step in optimizing the preparation of immobilized and water-soluble biocatalyst. In this study the two-level full factorial design was used to investigate the effect of PVA and boric acid concentrations and diffusions coefficient. Diffusion coefficient (De) is one of the factors that significantly affect the mass transport within the immobilization matrix. De value varies for each concentration of PVA and boric acid. The result concluded that both factors significantly affect the De. A maximum De value of 5.0141 x 10(-5) cm2s-1 was obtained at boric acid and PVA concentraion of 7w/v and 10.5 w/v respectively

Occupational health and safety (OHS) management system implementation is an effort to reduce the loss of business. Therefore, the management of PT. Phapros, Tbk. decided to obtain OHSAS 18001 certification to support its performance in OHS. This study was conducted to determine the level of compliance related to the OHS company's performance. The collected data were analyzed using factor analysis techniques, followed by Importance Performance Analysis (IPA), and then compared with measurements prior to the implementation of OHSAS 18001 using paired t test. The measurement result shows that there is no significant difference of the company's performance level and the compliance level between company's performance level and employee's importance level compared between before and after implementation of OHSAS 18001. While there is a significant difference for employee's importance level compared between before and after implementation of OHSAS 18001. Policies can be taken according to their priorities, such as high, medium, and low priority. One of the high priority program is to intensify training related to the employee's OHS understanding and awareness

Redesigning More Resilent Sahana System For Disaster Information In Indonesia

This application is a disaster information system in Indonesia using Sahana platform that has many unique features of the integration Sahana disaster with some applications that have been built independently in the previous year of mudflow in Sidoarjo, Solo in Bojonegoro Flood, and Forest Fires in Kalimantan. Addition, this application provides a virtual feature class that is learning GIS and Sahana, complete with an online test and the results. Since the system is web-based, then use the appropriate technology that is MapServer as web server, php, html, and javascript as a system builder and PostgreSQL for data storage. To improve the security of these applications also added SSL and Mod Security. SSL to secure data line and mod security to prevent attacks SQL Injection and Cross Site Scripting. Two of these securities will keep the system from attack, so the important data such as victims of disasters, infrastructure and map safe. With this integration, these applications into a complete information system, safely and in accordance with local conditions of each disaster. The Experience of Humanitarian Leaders in Managing Cultural Diversity

    Get PDF
The world is becoming increasingly more diverse, particularly in the workplace. Existing literature on diversity tends to focus on the visible types of diversity such as gender, race, and color from the for-profit business perspective. There is little research on the impact of the invisible type of diversity such as culture and national origin. Cultural diversity has rarely been studied in the context of non-profit international humanitarian organizations. These organizations face unique management challenges due to their volatile and chaotic environment with limited power and resources. Applying a control-oriented and normative management approach proved to be ineffective. Thus, there is a need for further research tailored to international humanitarian non-governmental organizations (IHNGOs). This study aimed to highlight the role of IHNGOs’ leaders in cultural diversity management. The study found cultural diversity management is a very challenging process. It identified five components for successful cultural diversity management. When diversity is managed properly the study found it pays off. Developing a critical mind and broadening perspective are some of the impacts of longtime exposure to different cultures. Another finding of the study is that dominant culture has a negative impact on leaders from a minority background. This qualitative research of narrative inquiry used interviews as an exclusive data collection method to capture the unique experiences of seven CEOs of IHNGOs. The implication for the practice of this study shows the challenging nature of the cultural diversity management process, thus it prepares leaders mentally. In addition, it provides a formula for success and a list of needed skills and competencies to succeed in managing culturally diverse teams

This article focus to analyze (1) Effect of education budget, health budget and economy toword of human resources quality in Jambi province. (2) The influence of inflation, unemployment and human resources quality toword of economy in Jambi province. The data poaltime series was taken 2007-2011 of regency and city in Jambi province. The analyze use Simultaneous model. Before analysis, we also checked cointegration test and causalities between human resources quality and economy. The result of research concludes that (1) The have education budget a significant and positive impact toword of human resources quality, health budget have a unsignificant and positive impact toword of human resources quality and economy have unsignificant and positive toword of human resources in Jambi province. (2) Inflation have significant and negative impact toword of economy, unemployment and human resources quality unsignificantly influence impact toword economy in Jambi province. Policy implications of the results of this study are: 1) government efforts through education budget and health budget in the form of the government budget through health and education facilities in the form of facilities and infrastructure, as well as education and health services to improve the quality of human resources. 2) efforts to do next government in building the economy of the region is to maintain stable prices in the market to curb inflation and provide employment business for the community as well as providing training to workers in order to reduce unemployment
