Assessment of Students Performances in Biology: Implication for Measurements and Evaluation of Learning
Scienceeducation is believed to be a vital tool for individual and societal development at large. The persistent low levels of students' achievement in sciences at the various public examinations in Nigeria have continued to draw the attention of major stakeholders in education. This study examined academic achievement of Senior Secondary School students in biology and gender difference in students' achievement was examined. Ex-post facto design of descriptive research was adopted for the study. A proforma was used to collect data from a sample of two hundred (200) students, selected using stratified random sampling procedure from the Science secondary schools in Kano state Nigeria. The data collected were the students' performances in biology achievement tests. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and independent-sample t-test. Overall results showed that the test internal consistency reliability is low and unsatisfactory; the students performed below average (M=47.02, SD=16.493 (47%). Similarly, gender difference exists in biology performance with another significant difference between performance of urban and rural school students. The study concludes that, biology test used in Kano state qualifying examinations to assess students potential ability in biology is not a reliable measurement tool and that, academic performance of students in biology is unsatisfactory and evidence of differential performance between gender and schools locations. The implication for measurements and evaluation of learning as well as recommendations has been discussed
Sensor material characterisation for magnetometer application
Scaling behavior of a one-dimensional correlated disordered electronic System
A one-dimensional diagonal tight binding electronic system with correlated
disorder is investigated. The correlation of the random potential is
exponentially decaying with distance and its correlation length diverges as the
concentration of "wrong sign" approaches to 1 or 0. The correlated random
number sequence can be generated easily with a binary sequence similar to that
of a one-dimensional spin glass system. The localization length (LL) and the
integrated density of states (IDOS) for long chains are computed. A comparison
with numerical results is made with the recently developed scaling technique
results. The Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) is also adopted to obtain
scaling functions for both the LL and the IDOS. We confirmed that the scaling
functions show a crossover near the band edge and establish their relation to
the concentration. For concentrations near to 0 or 1 (longer correlation length
case), the scaling behavior is followed only for a very limited range of the
potential strengths.Comment: will appear in PR
So that athletes are required to be able to react quickly, precisely and agile. The aim of research to determine the effect of exercise Speed-Agility-Quickness (SAQ) that has been adapted to the situation always happens in this sport. From a population of women’s softball Baseball Softball Club Rusa Hitam Bandung obtained 15 samples (purposive sampling). Exercise Speed-Agility-Quickness (independent variable) and agility athlete softball (the dependent variable). The research method uses a qualitative approach (experimental). The research instrument used Illinois Agility Run Test. Based on the results of the processing and data analysis tests the hypothesis that the t-test (25.162) > t-table (1.761), then the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, because there are significant differences. His hypothesis is exercise Speed-Agility-Quickness (SAQ) had a significant influence on the agility athlete women's softball Baseball Softball Club Rusa Hitam Bandung. Therefore, the authors give advice to coaches, trainers and athletes to apply these exercises regularly and programmed properly to improve the components of the physical condition of athletes agility softball
Why Are Secondary School Girls Not Embracing Science?
This thesis examines some of the factors that impact upon secondary school girls and the subsequent decisions that they make, whether to continue their study of science, once it becomes an elective area of study. Specifically, the girls were asked about their previous experiences in science classes, their perceptions and beliefs about science teachers, and the girls’ attainment or lack of success in science and perceptions about self-efficacy.
For the first component all female students in their grade twelve year were asked to fill out a questionnaire, to determine general perceptions about science learning, based on opinions and personal experiences in school. On the basis of their questionnaire responses, indicating either a strong favourable or unfavourable experience in or attitude to, learning and doing science, 8 of the 39 girls that completed the survey were then chosen to be interviewed.
Using various statistical treatments several themes emerged: Interest, Importance, Self-Efficacy were found to be statistically significant upon the girls’ decisions; while the themes Gender, Teacher, and Difficulty were not. Possible suggestions on how to positively affect these factors, so that they would better encourage, engage and support girls in their learning and doing of science, were discussed. Implications of the findings were also used to determine possible future areas of research, to ensure that ongoing progress is made so that girls have the opportunity to learn and participate in science in ways that engage them, are meaningful to them and their lives, and that allow them to be successful.
