An X-Ray Detection Possibility of Star-Formation-Bursting Proto-Elliptical Galaxies

A possibility to detect X-rays from star-formation burst activities in proto-elliptical galaxies is considered. The X-ray flux of an emission due to inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) by high energy electrons accelerated in SNRs is shown to increase as z increases far beyond unity, since the local CMB flux largely increases in association with a z-increase. The flux is estimated for the case of a very high rate of type II supernovae at an initial star formation burst of a proto-elliptical galaxy and is found to be detectable with a future large X-ray telescope such as intended in the XEUS mission.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, will appear in PAS

Oscillation dynamics underlie functional switching of NF-κB for B-cell activation.

Transcription factor nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) shows cooperative switch-like activation followed by prolonged oscillatory nuclear translocation in response to extracellular stimuli. These dynamics are important for activation of the NF-κB transcriptional machinery, however, NF-κB activity regulated by coordinated actions of these dynamics has not been elucidated at the system level. Using a variety of B cells with artificially rewired NF-κB signaling networks, we show that oscillations and switch-like activation of NF-κB can be dissected and that, under some conditions, these two behaviors are separated upon antigen receptor activation. Comprehensive quantitative experiments and mathematical analysis showed that the functional role of switch activation in the NF-κB system is to overcome transient IKK (IκB kinase) activity to amplify nuclear translocation of NF-κB, thereby inducing the prolonged NF-κB oscillatory behavior necessary for target gene expression and B-cell activation

Gas flow-directed growth of aligned carbon nanotubes from nonmetallic seeds

Kite growth is a process that utilizes laminar gas flow in chemical vapor deposition to grow long, well-aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for electronic application. This process uses metal nanoparticles (NPs) as catalytic seeds for CNT growth. However, these NPs remain as impurities in the grown CNT. In this study, nanodiamonds (NDs) with negligible catalytic activity were utilized as nonmetallic seeds instead of metal catalysts because they are stable at high temperatures and facilitate the growth of low-defect CNTs without residual metal impurities. Results demonstrate the successful growth of over 100-μ\mum-long CNTs by carefully controlling the growth conditions. Importantly, we developed an analysis method that utilizes secondary electron (SE) yield to distinguish whether or not CNTs grown from metal impurities. The absence of metallic NPs at the CNT tips was revealed by the SE yield mapping, whereas the presence of some kind of NPs at the same locations was confirmed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). These results suggest that most of the aligned CNTs were grown from nonmetallic seeds, most likely ND-derived NPs, via the tip-growth mode. Structural characterizations revealed the high crystallinity of CNTs, with relatively small diameters. This study presents the first successful use of nonmetallic seeds for kite growth and provides a convincing alternative for starting materials to prepare long, aligned CNTs without metal impurities. The findings of this study pave the way for more convenient fabrication of aligned CNT-based devices, potentially simplifying the production process by avoiding the need for the removal of metal impurities.Comment: Accepted version.

This time, we summarized the history of gymnastics in Kobe College in Taisho era by quoting the reference from alumna bulletine "Megumi". Kobe College in Taisho era was governed by the principal C.B. DeForest, she performed 50 years Memorial ceremony at Taisyo 5. We can understand Taisho eara as development eara, because of Kobe College Spiritual exaltation by the principal, proffesors, stuffs and students. In Meiji era, missionaries taught the gymnastics to students by themselves, but in Taisho era Japanies gymnastis teachers had done gradually. We can be informed the character of teachers and spiritual exaltation to Kobe College by revieus ob our alumna bulletine "Megumi". We had only one gymnasium in school at Meiji eara, but one more gymnasium had constructed at Taisho era (Taisho 8), so recognization for gymnastics had been improved. So, many kinds of sports, such as tennis ball, basket ball, Japanese archery and many kinds of dance and so on, had been availabled

Kobe College (hereafter, \u27we\u27) began its 127-year-history in 1875 (Meiji 6) when two women, Miss Eliza Talcott and Miss Julia Dudley, missionaries of the American Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions, founded a private school in Kobe. Hoping to diffuse the Christian way of thinking and to help young women realize their full potential, they founded Kobe Home as an educationai institute in 1875 (Meiji 8) while continuing their missionary work. In 1880 (Meiji 13), our 2nd president, Miss. Clarkson, who had fur-ther focused on the educational sphere, accommodated the school to the Japanese educational system and introduced "gymnastics" into its curriculum. Later, gymnastics was renamed to physical education and has been a part of the curriculum in our college since then, as well as in our junior high school and high school for more than 120 years. In the new millennium, health education is again attracting so much attention that some colleges are now establishing a new department for it. The crest of our college, the three-leave-clover, represents our three principles; body, mind and spirit. One of these principles lies in health education. Unlike many other chronicles of our college, my study is focusing on the history of physical education, mainly on health education in the Meiji era, by using chronological charts. From the perspective of physical education, the Meiji era saw the onset of nationalism, which strongly affected Japanese society afterward. However, this was not the case for our college, a women\u27s college run by foreign missionaries. First let us review our alumni bulletin, "Megumi" filled with affection for our alma mater, to understand the circumstances at that time
