Eliminating ambiguities for quantum corrections to strings moving in AdS4×CP3AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3

We apply a physical principle, previously used to eliminate ambiguities in quantum corrections to the 2 dimensional kink, to the case of spinning strings moving in AdS4×CP3AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3, thought of as another kind of two dimensional soliton. We find that this eliminates the ambiguities and selects the result compatible with AdS/CFT, providing a solid foundation for one of the previous calculations, which found agreement. The method can be applied to other classical string "solitons".Comment: 18 pages, latex; references added, comments added at end of section 4, a few words changed; footnote added on page 1

Towards the noise reduction of piezoelectrical-driven synthetic jet actuators

This paper details an experimental investigation aimed at reducing the noise output of piezoelectrical-driven synthetic jet actuators without compromising peak jet velocity. Specifically, the study considers double-chamber ('back-to-back') actuators for anti-phase noise suppression and corrugated-lobed orifices as a method to enhance turbulent mixing of the jets to suppress jet noise. The study involved the design, manufacture and bench test of interchangeable actuator hardware. Hot-wire anemometry and microphone recordings were employed to acquire velocity and noise measurements respectively for each chamber configuration and orifice plate across a range of excitation frequencies and for a fixed input voltage. The data analysis indicated a 32% noise reduction (20 dBA) from operating a singlechamber, circular orifice SJA to a double-chamber, corrugated-lobed orifice SJA at the Helmholtz resonant frequency. Results also showed there was a small reduction in peak jet velocity of 7% (~3 m/s) between these two cases based on orifices of the same discharge area. Finally, the electrical-to-fluidic power conversion efficiency of the double-chamber actuator was found to be 15% across all orifice designs at the resonant frequency; approximately double the efficiency of a single-chamber actuator. This work has thus demonstrated feasible gains in noise reduction and power efficiency through synthetic jet actuator design

A conical deficit in the AdS4/CFT3 correspondence

Inspired by the AdS/CFT correspondence we propose a new duality that allow the study of strongly coupled field theories living in a 2+1 conical space-time. Solving the 4-d Einstein equations in the presence of an infinite static string and negative cosmological constant we obtain a conical AdS4 space-time whose boundary is identified with the 2+1 cone found by Deser, Jackiw and 't Hooft. Using the AdS4/CFT3 correspondence we calculate retarded Green's functions of scalar operators living in the cone.Comment: v3, 14 pages. Kaluza-Klein Consistency, Killing Vectors, and Kahler Spaces

We make a detailed investigation of all spaces Q_{n_1... n_N}^{q_1... q_N} of the form of U(1) bundles over arbitrary products \prod_i CP^{n_i} of complex projective spaces, with arbitrary winding numbers q_i over each factor in the base. Special cases, including Q_{11}^{11} (sometimes known as T^{11}), Q_{111}^{111} and Q_{21}^{32}, are relevant for compactifications of type IIB and D=11 supergravity. Remarkable ``conspiracies'' allow consistent Kaluza-Klein S^5, S^4 and S^7 sphere reductions of these theories that retain all the Yang-Mills fields of the isometry group in a massless truncation. We prove that such conspiracies do not occur for the reductions on the Q_{n_1... n_N}^{q_1... q_N} spaces, and that it is inconsistent to make a massless truncation in which the non-abelian SU(n_i+1) factors in their isometry groups are retained. In the course of proving this we derive many properties of the spaces Q_{n_1... n_N}^{q_1... q_N} of more general utility. In particular, we show that they always admit Einstein metrics, and that the spaces where q_i=(n_i+1)/\ell all admit two Killing spinors. We also obtain an iterative construction for real metrics on CP^n, and construct the Killing vectors on Q_{n_1... n_N}^{q_1... q_N} in terms of scalar eigenfunctions on CP^{n_i}. We derive bounds that allow us to prove that certain Killing-vector identities on spheres, necessary for consistent Kaluza-Klein reductions, are never satisfied on Q_{n_1... n_N}^{q_1... q_N}.Comment: Latex, 43 pages, references added and typos correcte

    On unquenched N=2 holographic flavor

The addition of fundamental degrees of freedom to a theory which is dual (at low energies) to N=2 SYM in 1+3 dimensions is studied. The gauge theory lives on a stack of Nc D5 branes wrapping an S^2 with the appropriate twist, while the fundamental hypermultiplets are introduced by adding a different set of Nf D5-branes. In a simple case, a system of first order equations taking into account the backreaction of the flavor branes is derived (Nf/Nc is kept of order 1). From it, the modification of the holomorphic coupling is computed explicitly. Mesonic excitations are also discussed.Comment: 25 pages, 4 figure

    Consistent truncation of d = 11 supergravity on AdS_4 x S^7

We study the system of equations derived twenty five years ago by B. de Wit and the first author [Nucl. Phys. B281 (1987) 211] as conditions for the consistent truncation of eleven-dimensional supergravity on AdS_4 x S^7 to gauged N = 8 supergravity in four dimensions. By exploiting the E_7(7) symmetry, we determine the most general solution to this system at each point on the coset space E_7(7)/SU(8). We show that invariants of the general solution are given by the fluxes in eleven-dimensional supergravity. This allows us to both clarify the explicit non-linear ansatze for the fluxes given previously and to fill a gap in the original proof of the consistent truncation. These results are illustrated with several examples.Comment: 41 pages, typos corrected, published versio

    Thermodynamics of AdS/QCD

We study finite temperature properties of four dimensional QCD-like gauge theories in the gauge theory/gravity duality picture. The gravity dual contains two deformed 5d AdS metrics, with and without a black hole, and a dilaton. We study the thermodynamics of the 4d boundary theory and constrain the two metrics so that they correspond to a high and a low temperature phase separated by a first order phase transition. The equation of state has the standard form for the pressure of a strongly coupled fluid modified by a vacuum energy, a bag constant. We determine the parameters of the deformation by using QCD results for TcT_c and the hadron spectrum. With these parameters, we show that the phase transition in the 4d boundary theory and the 5d bulk Hawking-Page transition agree. We probe the dynamics of the two phases by computing the quark-antiquark free energy in them and confirm that the transition corresponds to confinement-deconfinement transition.Comment: 1+19 pages, 6 figures, references added, section 3 improve

    Non-conformal examples of AdS/CFT

Asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes with Poincare invariance along the boundary can describe, via the AdS/CFT correspondence, either relevant deformations of a conformal field theory or non-conformal vacuum states. I consider examples of both types constructed in the framework of five-dimensional gauged supergravity. I explain the proof and motivation of a gravitational ``c-theorem'' which is independent of dimension. I show how one class of examples can be elevated to ten-dimensional geometries involving distributions of parallel D3-branes. For these cases some peculiar properties of two-point functions emerge, and I close with speculations on their physical origin.Comment: 16 pages, two figures, latex. Strings '99 tal

    Holographic Uniformization

We derive and study supergravity BPS flow equations for M5 or D3 branes wrapping a Riemann surface. They take the form of novel geometric flows intrinsically defined on the surface. Their dual field-theoretic interpretation suggests the existence of solutions interpolating between an arbitrary metric in the UV and the constant-curvature metric in the IR. We confirm this conjecture with a rigorous global existence proof.Comment: 52 pages, 3 figure

Constraining the Detailed Balance Condition in Horava Gravity with Cosmic Accelerating Expansion

In 2009 Ho\v{r}ava proposed a power-counting renormalizable quantum gravity theory. Afterwards a term in the action that softly violates the detailed balance condition has been considered with the attempt of obtaining a more realistic theory in its IR-limit. This term is proportional to ωR(3)\omega R^{(3)}, where ω\omega is a constant parameter and R(3)R^{(3)} is the spatial Ricci scalar. In this paper we derive constraints on this IR-modified Ho\v{r}ava theory using the late-time cosmic accelerating expansion observations. We obtain a lower bound of âˆŁÏ‰âˆŁ|\omega| that is nontrivial and depends on ΛW\Lambda_W, the cosmological constant of the three dimensional spatial action in the Ho\v{r}ava gravity. We find that to preserve the detailed balance condition, one needs to fine-tune ΛW\Lambda_W such that - 2.29\times 10^{-4}< (c^2 \Lambda_W)/(H^2_0 \currentDE) - 2 < 0 , where H0H_0 and \currentDE are the Hubble parameter and dark energy density fraction in the present epoch, respectively. On the other hand, if we do not insist on the detailed balance condition, then the valid region for ΛW\Lambda_W is much relaxed to -0.39< (c^2 \Lambda_W)/(H^2_0 \currentDE) - 2 < 0.12. We find that although the detailed balance condition cannot be ruled out, it is strongly disfavored.Comment: 22 pages with 7 figures, references adde
