A space servicing telerobotics technology demonstration
Supervised telerobotic controls provide the key to successful remote servicing, as demonstrated in the telerobot testbed of the jet propulsion laboratory. Such advanced techniques and systems are specially applicable to ground-remote operations for servicing tasks, which are to be performed remotely in space and to be operated under human supervision from the ground. Laboratory demonstrations have successfully proven the utility of such techniques and systems. Instrumental to the success of supervised robotic operations are the techniques called object designate and relative target. In addition, a technique called universal camera calibration was also applied in the telerobot testbed. Generalized compliant control techniques were used in the robotic removal and insertion operations. These techniques were proven successful in task situations where preprogrammed automation cannot be adequately exercised due to errors, changes, or omission in the worksite data base

Computing matrix inversion with optical networks
With this paper we bring about a discussion on the computing potential of
complex optical networks and provide experimental demonstration that an optical
fiber network can be used as an analog processor to calculate matrix inversion.
A 3x3 matrix is inverted as a proof-of-concept demonstration using a fiber
network containing three nodes and operating at telecomm wavelength. For an NxN
matrix, the overall solving time (including setting time of the matrix elements
and calculation time of inversion) scales as O(N^2), whereas matrix inversion
by most advanced computer algorithms requires ~O(N^2.37) computational time.
For well-conditioned matrices, the error of the inversion performed optically
is found to be less than 3%, limited by the accuracy of measurement equipment.Comment: 5 page
Phase Coexistence Near a Morphotropic Phase Boundary in Sm-doped BiFeO3 Films
We have investigated heteroepitaxial films of Sm-doped BiFeO3 with a
Sm-concentration near a morphotropic phase boundary. Our high-resolution
synchrotron X-ray diffraction, carried out in a temperature range of 25C to
700C, reveals substantial phase coexistence as one changes temperature to
crossover from a low-temperature PbZrO3-like phase to a high-temperature
orthorhombic phase. We also examine changes due to strain for films greater or
less than the critical thickness for misfit dislocation formation.
Particularly, we note that thicker films exhibit a substantial volume collapse
associated with the structural transition that is suppressed in strained thin
films

Involving users in OPAC interface design: Perspective from a UK study

An experiment was undertaken to find out the type of interactions features that users prefer to have in an OPAC. The study revealed that regardless of users’ Information Technology (IT) backgrounds, their functionality expectations of OPACs are the same. However, based on users’ previous experiences with OPACs, their requirements with respect to specific features may change. Users should be involved early in the OPAC development cycle process in order to ensure usable and functional interface
