A note of Psychological Study on Caregiver's Self-help Group
Research on the relation between relaxation and promotion factors of stresses from home caregiving revealed that the number of years as a member of caregivers group had positive effect against such stresses. In this study, we prepared questionnaires focused on psychological function of caregiver's self-help group. Survey sheets were mailed to 385 caregivers joinning in such groups, and 176 valid answers were collected from February to March, 2000. The average age of caregivers was 64.5 years old, and most of them are spouses and daughters-in-law in 3 to 4 people families. The average period as a member of a group is 4.2 years. They satisfied with the activities, and are willing to be continuing members. One third of them always or often come to the meetings, and they ask public service when they attend. Demand for knowledge and technique on caregiving is high, and the group fulfill most of the demand. The members are also willing to tell information to others
A Note of Psychological Study on Family Care Givers for the Elderly
Load for caregiving is increasing as the number of elderly is increaing and their bedridden period is becoming longer. The load for caregiving should be shared by the entire society, but the fact is that actual load is on domestic caregivers. We carried out a survey on the load for caregiving from January to March, 1999. Questionnaires were delivered and collected from 239 home caregivers who have elderly over 65 years old. The average age of the caregivers were 65.0 years old. Our analyses indicate that the caregivers are exhausted mentaly and physically from the load, but they keep encouraging themselves with resposibility as families

care itself. In particular, we focused on how these two aspects improve the quality of lives (QOL) of caregivers and the elderly. In terms of motivation, the affection
and family bond are the most important factors and that deterioration of the elderly often make the caregivers to discontinue the care at home. Traditional view and gender roles based on the Japanese patriarchy have strong influence on the sense of obligation. Wish to be cared from the elderly in the early stage of the care and religious influence are not sources of strong motivations to continue. Two daughters-in laws who felt the feedback from the care have higher motivation, suggesting that positive recognition that the care gives a worthwhile experience, possibly provides a motivation for the care

Especially, focuses are given on the intention of attendance by the past caregivers, what they obtained in the meeting, and the influence of past caregivers on the active caregiver. We interviewed 10 active caregivers and 13 past caregivers from two meetings using a semi-structural method. As a result, 1) management by the past caregivers give some relief to the active caregivers to participate, and they also provide the sense of security and the caring tips. 2) The past caregivers gradually change their viewpoint from listening to talking, and they look back own experience in caring. 3) The past caregivers acquire some information in the meeting, and obtained trust from the active caregivers, which leads to the growth and the motivation of the meeting
