    The theoretical channel capacity of a single neuron as determined by various coding systems

    The information channel capacity of a model neuron with a fixed refractory period [delta] has been calculated for optimum continuous time interval coding. Two types of noise perturbations have been considered, a Gaussian probability distribution and a rectangular distribution of the time of occurrence of the response to a stimulus. Laboratory measurements indicate a Gaussian distribution with a standard deviation of latency [sigma], of about 5 [mu]sec gives the best fit to an actual nerve fiber. This results in a maximum information transmission of slightly over 4000 bits per second.     Therapeutic collaboration and resistance: describing the nature and quality of the therapeutic relationship within ambivalence events using the therapeutic collaboration coding system

    We understand ambivalence as a cyclical movement between two opposing parts of the self. The emergence of a novel part produces an innovative moment, challenging the current maladaptive self-narrative. However, the novel part is subsequently attenuated by a return to the maladaptive self-narrative. This study focused on the analysis of the therapeutic collaboration in episodes in which a relatively poor-outcome client in narrative therapy expressed ambivalence. Method: For our analysis we used the Therapeutic Collaboration Coding System, developed to assess whether and how the therapeutic dyad is working within the therapeutic zone of proximal development (TZPD). Results: Results showed that when the therapist challenged the client after the emergence of ambivalence, the client tended to invalidate (reject or ignore) the therapist’s intervention. Conclusions: This suggests that in such ambivalence episodes the therapist did not match the client’s developmental level, and by working outside the TZPD unintentionally contributed to the maintaining the client’s ambivalence

    Global Infrared Observations of Roughness Induced Transition on the Space Shuttle Orbiter

    High resolution infrared observations made from a mobile ground based optical system captured the laminar-to-turbulent boundary layer transition process as it occurred during Space Shuttle Endeavour's return to earth following its final mission in 2011. The STS-134 imagery was part of a larger effort to demonstrate an emerging and reliable non-intrusive global thermal measurement capability and to complement a series of boundary layer transition flight experiments that were flown on the Shuttle. The STS-134 observations are believed to be the first time that the development and movement of a hypersonic boundary layer transition front has been witnessed in flight over the entire vehicle surface and in particular, at unprecedented spatial resolution. Additionally, benchmark surface temperature maps of the Orbiter lower surface collected over multiple flights and spanning a Mach range of 18 to 6 are now available and represent an opportunity for collaborative comparison with computational techniques focused on hypersonic transition and turbulence modeling. The synergy of the global temperature maps with the companion in-situ thermocouple measurements serve as an example of the effective leveraging of resources to achieve a common goal of advancing our understanding of the complex nature of high Mach number transition. It is shown that quantitative imaging can open the door to a multitude of national and international opportunities for partnership associated with flight-testing and subsequent validation of numerical simulation techniques. The quantitative imaging applications highlighted in this paper offer unique and complementary flight measurement alternatives and suggest collaborative instrumentation opportunities to advance the state of the art in transition prediction and maximize the return on investment in terms of developmental flight tests for future vehicle designs

    Photochemistry of framework-supported M(diimine)(CO)₃X complexes in 3D Lithium-Carboxylate metal−organic frameworks: monitoring the effect of framework cations

    The structures and photochemical behaviour of two new metal-organic frameworks are reported. Reaction of Re(2,2ʹ-bipyʹ-5,5ʹ-dicarboxylic acid)(CO)₃Cl or Mn(2,2ʹ-bipyʹ-5,5ʹ- dicarboxylic acid)(CO)₃Br with either LiCl or LiBr, respectively, produces single crystals of {Li₂(DMF)₂[(2,2ʹ-bipyʹ-5,5ʹ-dicarboxylate)Re(CO)₃Cl]}n (ReLi) or {Li₂(DMF)₂[(2,2ʹ-bipyʹ- 5,5ʹ-dicarboxylate)Mn(CO)₃Br]}n (MnLi). The structures formed by the two MOFs comprise one-dimensional chains of carboxylate-bridged Li(I) cations that are cross-linked by units of Re(2,2ʹ-bipyʹ-5,5ʹ-dicarboxylate)(CO)₃Cl (ReLi) or Mn(2,2ʹ-bipyʹ-5,5ʹ- dicarboxylate)(CO)₃Br (MnLi). The photophysical and photochemical behaviour of both ReLi and MnLi are probed. The rhenium-containing MOF, ReLi, exhibits luminescence and the excited state behaviour, as established by time-resolved infra-red measurements, are closer in behaviour to that of unsubstituted [Re(bipy)(CO)₃Cl] rather than a related MOF where the Li(I) cations are replaced by Mn(II) cations. These observations are further supported by DFT calculations. Upon excitation MnLi forms a dicarbonyl species which rapidly recombines with the dissociated CO, in a fashion consistent with the majority of the photoejected CO not escaping the MOF channels
