A qualitative exploration of consumers’ perceived impacts, behavioural reactions, and future reflections of the EU Tobacco Products Directive (2017) as applied to electronic cigarettes
Background: Electronic cigarette regulations included in the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD), Article 20, implemented in Europe by May 2017, aimed to improve safety for e-cigarette consumers, and prevent uptake among non-smokers, particularly young people. Before implementation, there were significant concerns from consumers, industry, and some in the scientific community about the potential negative impact of the TPD on people using e-cigarettes to stay stopped from smoking. To date, there is limited evidence on how the TPD has affected consumers. This study aimed to add insight into how consumers perceived and experienced the regulations. Methods: Qualitative data, collected between March 2018 and March 2019, relating to participant views of the TPD were extracted from 160 interviews/extended surveys of e-cigarette consumers as part of a wider study into e-cigarette use trajectories (ECtra study). Data were thematically analysed. Results: Awareness of the TPD amongst consumers was not universal. Participants’ smoking behaviour did not appear to be influenced by the legislation. Participants were reassured by manufacturing regulations and requirements for ingredients labels. Participants responded negatively to changes perceived to cause inconvenience and extra plastic waste. The product restrictions prompted some participants to purchase non-compliant products illegally, potentially putting their safety at risk. Conclusions: E-cigarette regulation should focus on ensuring product safety. Raising awareness of the TPD amongst consumers and smokers could be beneficial
Might EPR particles communicate through a wormhole?
We consider the two-particle wave function of an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen
system, given by a two dimensional relativistic scalar field model. The Bohm-de
Broglie interpretation is applied and the quantum potential is viewed as
modifying the Minkowski geometry. In this way an effective metric, which is
analogous to a black hole metric in some limited region, is obtained in one
case and a particular metric with singularities appears in the other case,
opening the possibility, following Holland, of interpreting the EPR
correlations as being originated by an effective wormhole geometry, through

HST/STIS Imaging of the Host Galaxy of GRB980425/SN1998bw
We present HST/STIS observations of ESO 184-G82, the host galaxy of the
gamma-ray burst GRB 980425 associated with the peculiar Type Ic supernova
SN1998bw. ESO 184-G82 is found to be an actively star forming SBc sub-luminous
galaxy. We detect an object consistent with being a point source within the
astrometric uncertainty of 0.018 arcseconds of the position of the supernova.
The object is located inside a star-forming region and is at least one
magnitude brighter than expected for the supernova based on a simple
radioactive decay model. This implies either a significant flattening of the

Technology development for 4k x 4k, back-illuminated, fully depleted scientific CCD imagers
Journal ArticleWe have developed scientific charge-coupled devices (CCDs) that are fabricated on high-resistivity, n-type silicon substrates, and have demonstrated fully depleted operation for substrate thicknesses of 200-675 μm with formats as large as 2048 × 4096 (15 μm pixels) and 3512 × 3512 (10.5 μm pixels). The main application area for these devices is space and ground-based astronomy, and the CCDs are operated at cryogenic temperatures with slow-scan readout for good performance in terms of dark current and noise. In this work we describe the technology development efforts needed to realize a 4k × 4k (15 μm pixel) CCD with a die area of (64 mm)2. In particular, we describe improved gettering techniques for low dark current and high charge transfer efficiency that have been developed in order to improve fabrication yields for these very large format CCDs
High-voltage-compatible fully depleted CCDs
Journal ArticleWe describe charge-coupled device (CCD) development activities at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Back-illuminated CCDs fabricated on 200-300 fxm thick, fully depleted, high-resistivity silicon substrates are produced in partnership with a commercial CCD foundry. The CCDs are fully depleted by the application of a substrate bias voltage. Spatial resolution considerations require operation of thick, fully depleted CCDs at high substrate bias voltages. We have developed CCDs that are compatible with substrate bias voltages of at least 200V. This improves spatial resolution for a given thickness, and allows for full depletion of thicker CCDs than previously considered. We have demonstrated full depletion of 650-675 iim thick CCDs, with potential applications in direct x-ray detection. In this work we discuss the issues related to high-voltage operation of fully depleted CCDs, as well as experimental results on high-voltage-compatible CCDs
Vibrational branching ratios and hyperfine structure of BH and its suitability for laser cooling
The simple structure of the BH molecule makes it an excellent candidate for
direct laser cooling. We measure the branching ratios for the decay of the
state to vibrational levels of the ground state, , and find that they are exceedingly favourable for laser
cooling. We verify that the branching ratio for the spin-forbidden transition
to the intermediate state is inconsequentially small. We
measure the frequency of the lowest rotational transition of the X state, and
the hyperfine structure in the relevant levels of both the X and A states, and
determine the nuclear electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole coupling
constants. Our results show that, with a relatively simple laser cooling
scheme, a Zeeman slower and magneto-optical trap can be used to cool, slow and

Ant colony optimization with immigrants schemes in dynamic environments

Several approaches have been developed for EAs to increase the diversity of the population and enhance the performance of the algorithm for DOPs. Among these approaches, immigrants schemes have been found beneficial for EAs for DOPs. In this paper, random, elitismbased, and hybrid immigrants schemes are applied to ant colony optimization (ACO) for the dynamic travelling salesman problem (DTSP). The experimental results show that random immigrants are beneficial for ACO in fast changing environments, whereas elitism-based immigrants are beneficial for ACO in slowly changing environments. The ACO algorithm with hybrid immigrants scheme combines the merits of the random and elitism-based immigrants schemes. Moreover, the results show that the proposed algorithms outperform compared approaches in almost all dynamic test cases and that immigrant schemes efficiently improve the performance of ACO algorithms in DTSP.This work was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of UK under Grant EP/E060722/1
Developing enterprise culture in a northern educational authority in the UK: involving trainee teachers in learning-orientated evaluation
In this paper we discuss our use of innovative methods - at least in the context of regeneration evaluation - to help evaluate an enterprise project in northern England, paying particular attention to the involvement of trainee teachers. We discuss the methods used and critically appraise the methods and methodology, present some emerging findings from the trainee teachers strand and conclude by discussing the place of what might be termed 'learning-orientated evaluation' in relation to the currently dominant output-focussed evaluation paradigm.</p
