Variation of magnetic properties of SrFeMoO due to oxygen vacancies
Oxygen vacancies can be of utmost importance for improving or deteriorating
physical properties of oxide materials. Here, we studied from first-principles
the electronic and magnetic properties of oxygen vacancies in the double
perovskite SrFeMoO (SFMO). We show that oxygen vacancies can increase
the Curie temperature in SFMO, although the total magnetic moment is reduced at
the same time. We found also that the experimentally observed valence change of
the Fe ions from to in the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD)
measurements is better explained by oxygen vacancies than by the assumed mixed
valence state. The agreement of the calculated x-ray absorption spectra and
XMCD results with experimental data is considerably improved by inclusion of

Electronic state spectroscopy of C<sub>2</sub>Cl<sub>4</sub>
The VUV spectrum of C2Cl4 is reported in the energy range 3.8-10.8 eV (325-115 nm). Several photoabsorption features are observed for the first time, including a very weak low-lying band which is provisionally attributed to a π → π* triplet transition. Recent ab initio calculations of the molecule’s electronic transitions [Arulmozhiraja et al. J. Chem. Phys. 129 (2008) 174506] provide the basis for the present assignments below 8.5 eV. An extended ndπ series is proposed to account for several higher-energy Rydberg bands. The identification of vibrational structure, dominated by symmetric C=C and CCl2 stretching in excitations from the HOMO, largely agrees with previous spectroscopic studies. The present absolute photoabsorption cross sections cover a wider energy range than the previous measurements and are used to calculate UV photolysis lifetimes of this aeronomic molecule at altitudes between 20 and 50 km
A coproduct structure on the formal affine Demazure algebra
In the present paper we generalize the coproduct structure on nil Hecke rings
introduced and studied by Kostant-Kumar to the context of an arbitrary
algebraic oriented cohomology theory and its associated formal group law. We
then construct an algebraic model of the T-equivariant oriented cohomology of

Trilingual conversations: a window into multicompetence
A recurrent theme in the literature on trilingual language use is the question of whether there is a specific “trilingual competence.” In this paper we consider this question in the light of codeswitching patterns in two dyadic trilingual conversations between a mother and daughter conducted in (Lebanese) Arabic, French, and English. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of codeswitching in both conversants shows that, despite the fact that both subjects are fluent in all three languages, uses of switching are significantly different for mother and daughter across a number of features, including relative frequency of different switch types, and the incidence of hybrid constructions involving items from two or more languages. The subjects appear to display qualitatively distinct profiles of competence in the trilingual mode. This in turn leads to the conclusion that the facts of trilingual language use are best characterized in terms of “multicompetence” (Cook, 1991). The paper concludes with some further reflections on the uniqueness of trilingual language use (an “old chestnut” in
trilingualism research, cf. Klein, 1995)

Directional Soliton and Breather Beams
Solitons and breathers are nonlinear modes that exist in a wide range of
physical systems. They are fundamental solutions of a number of nonlinear wave
evolution equations, including the uni-directional nonlinear Schr\"odinger
equation (NLSE). We report the observation of slanted solitons and breathers
propagating at an angle with respect to the direction of propagation of the
wave field. As the coherence is diagonal, the scale in the crest direction
becomes finite, consequently, a beam dynamics forms. Spatio-temporal
measurements of the water surface elevation are obtained by
stereo-reconstructing the positions of the floating markers placed on a regular
lattice and recorded with two synchronized high-speed cameras. Experimental
results, based on the predictions obtained from the (2D+1) hyperbolic NLSE
equation, are in excellent agreement with the theory. Our study proves the
existence of such unique and coherent wave packets and has serious implications
for practical applications in optical sciences and physical oceanography.
Moreover, unstable wave fields in this geometry may explain the formation of
directional large amplitude rogue waves with a finite crest length within a
wide range of nonlinear dispersive media, such as Bose-Einstein condensates,
plasma, hydrodynamics and optics
Individual and Multi Vortex Pinning in Systems with Periodic Pinning Arrays
We examine multi and individual vortex pinning in thin superconductors with
periodic pinning arrays. For multi-vortex pinning we observe peaks in the
critical current of equal magnitude at every matching field, while for
individual vortex pinning we observe a sharp drop in the critical current after
the first matching field in agreement with experiments. We examine the scaling
of the critical current at commensurate and incommensurate fields for varied
pinning strength and show that the depinning force at incommensurate fields
decreases faster than at the commensurate fields.Comment: 4 figuure
