The primary purpose of this study was to explore the impact of three research methods. It examined online materials, as well as contextual research based on printed texts in the elementary population. The researcher sought to determine what the most effective method is for helping students to learn art history content, whether it is in the virtual environment of the Internet, the confines of various textbooks, or a combination of both technology-based and text-based research. The subjects of the study were fifth grade students who attended Bells Elementary School, Turnersville, NJ, in the fall of 2006. The researcher used multiple data collection instruments to verify findings: pre-tests and post-tests, a pre-research and post-research Student Attitude Survey, district standard grading scale, observation output, and class discussions. This paper will examine the effects of text-based research, technology-based research, and a combination of both mediums. It will uncover the best method of research development in an elementary art context

MobiHealth-Innovative 2.5/3G mobile services and applications for health care

    Get PDF
MobiHealth aims at introducing new mobile value added services in the area of healthcare, based on 2.5 (GPRS) and 3G (UMTS) technologies, thus promoting the use and deployment of GPRS and UMTS. This will be achieved by the integration of sensors and actuators to a Wireless Body Area Network (BAN). These sensors and actuators will continuously measure and transmit vital constants along with audio and video to health service providers and brokers, improving on one side the life of patients and allowing on the other side the introduction of new value-added services in the areas of disease prevention and diagnostic, remote assistance, para-health services, physical state monitoring (sports) and even clinical research. Furthermore, the MobiHealth BAN system will support the fast and reliable application of remote assistance in case of accidents by allowing the paramedics to send reliable vital constants data as well as audio and video directly from the accident site

Health care is one of the most prominent areas for the application of wireless technologies. New services and applications are today under research and development targeting different areas of health care, from high risk and chronic patients’ remote monitoring to mobility tools for the medical personnel. In this direction the MobiHealth project developed and trailed a system and a service that is using UMTS for the continuous monitoring and transmission of vital signals, like Pulse Oximeter sensor , temperature, Marker, Respiratory band, motion/activity detector etc., to the hospital. The system, based on the concept of the Body Area Network, is highly customisable, allowing sensors to be seamlessly connected and transmit the monitored vital signal measurements. The system and service was trialed in 4 European countries and it is presently under market validation

Past and Present Side By Side – A Native View on Colonial Mexico

With the monograph Indigenous Elites and Creole Identity in Colonial Mexico, 1500–1800 Peter Villella provides an intellectual history of native Mexican historiography over three centuries. He maps the patterns underlying the historical narrative developed by indigenous authors starting shortly after the Spanish expansion, who drew on their ancestors‘ Aztec past in order to uphold traditional rights. Their arguments are grounded in a close analysis of the changing social and judicial status of Mexican native people. The author argues that interactions between colonial native, Spanish, and creole writers shaped this narrative in constant flux, which continues to inform current Mexican politics and imaginations

Pirfenidone treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

    Get PDF
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a discrete clinicopathologic entity defined by the presence of usual interstitial pneumonia on high-resolution CT scan and/or open lung biopsy and the absence of an alternate diagnosis or exposure explaining these findings. There are currently no FDA-approved therapies available to treat this disease, and the 5-year mortality is ∼80%. The pyridone derivative pirfenidone has been studied extensively as a possible therapeutic agent for use in this deadly disease. This review will present the unique clinical features and management issues encountered by physicians caring for IPF patients, including the poor response to conventional therapy. The biochemistry and preclinical efficacy of pirfenidone will be discussed along with a comprehensive review of the clinical efficacy, safety, and side effects and patient-centered foci such as quality of life and tolerability. It is hoped that this information will lend insight into the complex issues surrounding the use of pirfenidone in IPF and lead to further investigation of this agent as a possible therapy in this devastating disease

Subprime Crisis and Marx's Theory on Ground Rent

    Get PDF
Most studies of the subprime crisis have taken into account the significance of the banks in general but not the specifically important role of mortgage loans including the crucial factor of private landed property. Marx's theory on ground rent serves as a key in a deeper understanding of the subprime crisis and in differentiating the class interests. Referring to Marx's theory on ground rent especially the topics of landed property, differential and absolute rent, price of land, mortgage, and fictitious capital, an analysis is given of the consequences of ground rent under monopolist capitalism, in particular on the recent subprime crisis, which has its winners and losers. The article concludes with the bourgeois and the proletarian solution of private landed property

The Theory of Factions in Monopoly Capital

Kurt Gossweiler has become known as one of the most important German researchers on fascism. Particularly his books The Röhm Affair, Big Banks, Industrial Monopolies, State: Economy and Policy of the State Monopolistic Capitalism in Germany 1914–1932 and Capital, Reichswehr and NSDAP: To the Early History of German Fascism 1919–1924 are found as reference books also in Western German university libraries, despite Gossweiler's main merit: having irrefutably hammered out the class character of fascism analyzing the factions in German monopoly capitalism. After 1989, after the incorporation of the socialist German Democratic Republic (GDR), he devoted himself to researching the causes of the collapse of the Soviet Union and its impact with focus on revisionism. </p

FINANCIAL AND CURRENCY CRISIS UNDERMINES THE EURO AND NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY

    Get PDF
The euro crisis reveals that, under imperialist conditions, oppressor nations developed and they are oppressing other nations. Less money capital of "rentiers" and "usurers" finds its way into the sphere of production to extract surplus value, but circulates in the financial sector as "fictitious capital" instead. The financial crisis shows where wealth is produced and how the capitalist crisis starting in the sphere of production, penetrated the financial sector and from there the most powerful EU states too. To rescue the rich, governments try to pass on the losses to the working people and the poor. The imperialist states try to pass on the burden to the weaker states, denying their national sovereignty. When the working class and the peoples organize resistance, the struggle amongst monopolies and national states over sharing the wealth and passing on the losses becomes fierce. The danger of fascism and war grows

Instantaneous band gap collapse in photoexcited monoclinic VO2_2 due to photocarrier doping

Using femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy we demonstrate that photoexcitation transforms monoclinic VO2_2 quasi-instantaneously into a metal. Thereby, we exclude an 80 femtosecond structural bottleneck for the photoinduced electronic phase transition of VO2_2. First-principles many-body perturbation theory calculations reveal a high sensitivity of the VO2_2 bandgap to variations of the dynamically screened Coulomb interaction, supporting a fully electronically driven isostructral insulator-to-metal transition. We thus conclude that the ultrafast band structure renormalization is caused by photoexcitation of carriers from localized V 3d valence states, strongly changing the screening \emph{before} significant hot-carrier relaxation or ionic motion has occurred
