Development and fabrication of bismaleimide-graphite composites
The successful fabrication of high temperature resistant composites depends mainly on the processability of the resin binder matrix. For two new bismaleimide type resins the processing of graphite fabric prepregs to composites is described. One resin coded M 751 has to be processed from N-Methylpyrrolidone, the other resin evaluated is a so-called hot melt solvent-less system. Commercial T300/3000 Graphite fabrics were used as reinforcement. The M 751 - Resin is a press grade material and laminates are therefore moulded in high pressure conditions (400 N/sq cm). The solvent-less resin system H 795 is an autoclave grade material and can be cured at 40 N/sq cm. The cure cycles for both the press grade and the autoclave grade material (Fiberite W 143 fabric prepregs) are provided and the mechanical properties of laminates at low (23 C) and high (232 C) temperatures were measured. For comparison, the neat resin flexural properties are also presented. The water absorption for the neat resins and the graphite fabric laminates after a 1000 hour period was evaluated
Linear resolutions of powers and products
The goal of this paper is to present examples of families of homogeneous
ideals in the polynomial ring over a field that satisfy the following
condition: every product of ideals of the family has a linear free resolution.
As we will see, this condition is strongly correlated to good primary
decompositions of the products and good homological and arithmetical properties
of the associated multi-Rees algebras. The following families will be discussed
in detail: polymatroidal ideals, ideals generated by linear forms and Borel
fixed ideals of maximal minors. The main tools are Gr\"obner bases and Sagbi
deformation
Minimum-error discrimination between subsets of linearly dependent quantum states
A measurement strategy is developed for a new kind of hypothesis testing. It
assigns, with minimum probability of error, the state of a quantum system to
one or the other of two complementary subsets of a set of N given
non-orthogonal quantum states occurring with given a priori probabilities. A
general analytical solution is obtained for N states that are restricted to a
two-dimensional subspace of the Hilbert space of the system. The result for the
special case of three arbitrary but linearly dependent states is applied to a
variety of sets of three states that are symmetric and equally probable. It is
found that, in this case, the minimum error probability for distinguishing one
of the states from the other two is only about half as large as the minimum
error probability for distinguishing all three states individually.Comment: Representation improved and generalized, references added. Accepted

Moduli Spaces for D-branes at the Tip of a Cone
For physicists: We show that the quiver gauge theory derived from a
Calabi-Yau cone via an exceptional collection of line bundles on the base has
the original cone as a component of its classical moduli space. For
mathematicians: We use data from the derived category of sheaves on a Fano
surface to construct a quiver, and show that its moduli space of
representations has a component which is isomorphic to the anticanonical cone
over the surface.Comment: 8 page
Heavy flavor diffusion in weakly coupled N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory
We use perturbation theory to compute the diffusion coefficient of a heavy
quark or scalar moving in N=4 SU(N_c) Super Yang-Mills plasma to leading order
in the coupling and the ratio T/M<<1. The result is compared both to recent
strong coupling calculations in the same theory and to the corresponding weak
coupling result in QCD. Finally, we present a compact and simple formulation of
the Lagrangian of our theory, N=4 SYM coupled to a massive fundamental N=2
hypermultiplet, which is well-suited for weak coupling expansions.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures; v3: error corrected in calculations, figures and

Examination of the aerosol indirect effect under contrasting environments during the ACE-2 experiment
International audienceThe Active Tracer High-resolution Atmospheric Model (ATHAM) has been adopted to examine the aerosol indirect effect in contrasting clean and polluted cloudy boundary layers during the Second Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE-2). Model results are in good agreement with available in-situ observations, which provides confidence in the results of ATHAM. Sensitivity tests have been conducted to examine the response of the cloud fraction (CF), cloud liquid water path (LWP), and cloud optical depth (COD) to changes in aerosols in the clean and polluted cases. It is shown for two cases that CF and LWP would decrease or remain nearly constant with an increase in aerosols, a result which shows that the second aerosol indirect effect is positive or negligibly small in these cases. Further investigation indicates that the background meteorological conditions play a critical role in the response of CF and LWP to aerosols. When large-scale subsidence is weak as in the clean case, the dry overlying air above the cloud is more efficiently entrained into the cloud, and in so doing, removes cloud water more efficiently, and results in lower CF and LWP when aerosol burden increases. However, when the large-scale subsidence is strong as in the polluted case, the growth of the cloud top is suppressed and the entrainment drying makes no significant difference when aerosol burden increases. Therefore, the CF and LWP remain nearly constant. In both the clean and polluted cases, the COD tends to increase with aerosols, and the total aerosol indirect effect (AIE) is negative even when the CF and LWP decrease with an increase in aerosols. Therefore, the first AIE dominates the response of the cloud to aerosols
Holographic non-relativistic fermionic fixed point and bulk dipole coupling
Inspired by the recently discovered non-relativistic fermionic fixed points,
we investigate how the presence of bulk dipole coupling modifies the spectral
function at one of these novel fixed points. As a result, although the infinite
flat band is always visible in the presence of the bulk dipole coupling as well
as chemical potential, the band is modified in a remarkable way at small
momenta up to the order of magnitude of bulk dipole coupling. On the other
hand, like a phoenix, a new Fermi surface sprouts from the formed gap when the
bulk dipole coupling is pushed up further such as to overshadow the charge
parameter, which is obviously different from what is found at the relativistic
fixed points.Comment: JHEP style, 1+17 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, typos corrected,

Thermodynamics of AdS/QCD
We study finite temperature properties of four dimensional QCD-like gauge
theories in the gauge theory/gravity duality picture. The gravity dual contains
two deformed 5d AdS metrics, with and without a black hole, and a dilaton. We
study the thermodynamics of the 4d boundary theory and constrain the two
metrics so that they correspond to a high and a low temperature phase separated
by a first order phase transition. The equation of state has the standard form
for the pressure of a strongly coupled fluid modified by a vacuum energy, a bag
constant. We determine the parameters of the deformation by using QCD results
for and the hadron spectrum. With these parameters, we show that the
phase transition in the 4d boundary theory and the 5d bulk Hawking-Page
transition agree. We probe the dynamics of the two phases by computing the
quark-antiquark free energy in them and confirm that the transition corresponds
to confinement-deconfinement transition.Comment: 1+19 pages, 6 figures, references added, section 3 improve

Study of Giant Pairing Vibrations with neutron-rich nuclei
We investigate the possible signature of the presence of giant pairing states
at excitation energy of about 10 MeV via two-particle transfer reactions
induced by neutron-rich weakly-bound projectiles. Performing particle-particle
RPA calculations on Pb and BCS+RPA calculations on Sn, we
obtain the pairing strength distribution for two particles addition and removal
modes. Estimates of two-particle transfer cross sections can be obtained in the
framework of the 'macroscopic model'. The weak-binding nature of the projectile
kinematically favours transitions to high-lying states. In the case of (~^6He,
\~^4He) reaction we predict a population of the Giant Pairing Vibration with
cross sections of the order of a millibarn, dominating over the mismatched
transition to the ground state.Comment: Talk presented in occasion of the VII School-Semina r on Heavy Ion
