A ‘’Brokeback Mountain’’ heteronormative rewriting: from words to the visual

Due to its public reception, Brokeback Mountain has become a gay icon of this century. It is therefore my intention to scrutinise Lee’s interpretation of Annie Proulx’s ‘’Brokeback Mountain’’ as a, in my opinion, heteronormative transposition from literature to cinema. Mainly, how the director has managed to transfer linguistic tropes into pictures with a special interest in gender agencies. I have therefore delved into topics such as: language, sexual identity, or spatiality among others. To that end, I have revised and consequently combined queer theories and film studies to create a comparative analysis on the matter

Political Discourses in Tennessee William's "Something About Him"

This article aims to gather three different dialogues that mutually cooperate in terms of time and ideology. It is therefore my intention to analyse Tennessee William’s "Something About Him" and its consequent intertext – Emerson’s "Self-Reliance"— under the umbrella of Raymond Williams’ political estimations. This comparative analysis will try to shed as much light as possible on the struggle between monolithic vs emergent discourses while delving into subjects such as: narration, gender, power dynamics or ‘communitarism,’ among others

First literary picture of Native-Americans: colonial approach to Shakespeare’s The Tempest

    Get PDF
This article aims to analyse Shakespeare’s The Tempest from a colonial perspective. There is an exceptional interest in three key figures I do consider to be fundamental for the coming analysis. On the one hand, Prospero, the settler, and, on the other, Ariel and Caliban as colonised subjects. Along with imperialistic dynamics, language, representations or power will also be briefly discussed. This paper is moreover rather innovative considering the very few literature written on Shakespeare and colonialism. To that end, I have consulted not only postcolonial theorists but reviews on the subject at hand

At first level this essay focuses on bringing up the life of a Canarian transwoman and, at a second, it concentrates on reconciling two colonial discourses. This essay starts by draw-ing a small draft on the life of Rosario Miranda, as a trans woman in rural Tenerife. This section is complemented by a brief introduction that aims to contextualize the LGTBQ+ scene in post-Franco Canaries. At the same time, we pose a brief analysis that pinpoints common experiences between Rosario and the hijra community through an iconoclastic analysis that brings together the images of Bahuchara Mata and la virgen de los Remedios. Drawing on the decolonial writing of María Lugones (2010), our final discussion presents a series of subversive possibilities that result from the performative dynamics within the gender binary paradigm
