Online counselling in schools as an additional option to face-to-face provision: exploration of pupils' experiences and comparison of effectiveness of working in different mediums

Aim/Purpose: A review of a UK Schools Counsellors attitudes to school-based online counselling (Hennigan & Goss, 2015) provided impetus for the current study, which sought to understand i) Pupil usage of online counselling provision (as an adjunct to f2f provision) from September 2016-July 2017 ii) Differences in CORE-10 and Goals Based outcomes for pupils using f2f only, online only or a blend of both iii) Pupil’s thoughts about offering choice of f2f, online or blended counselling. Design/Methodology: A pluralist, mixed methods approach utilised a variety of quantative analyses and a qualitative thematic analysis of post counselling interviews with pupils who had experienced either f2f or online counselling. Results/Findings: Of 68 pupils (7.6% of total pupil cohort) using the service, 52 (76%) chose to work f2f only and 16 (24%) chose online counselling (12 blended with f2f and 4 online only). Results suggest that those who received online counselling had a slightly a higher mean average first CORE-10 score and made slightly more improvement. Thematic analysis of post counselling pupil interviews revealed three main themes: ‘Convenience’, ‘Connection’ and ‘Confidentiality’. Perceived concerns that pupils had about online school-based counselling e.g. quality of relationship, confidentiality online, miscommunication and lack of visual cues, are comparable to some concerns that UK secondary school counsellors had in 2014 (Hennigan & Goss, 2015) and are potentially based upon lack of exposure to relevant information. Research Limitations: The relatively small sample size and school type selected for the study limit reliability and generalisability. Future research could address these through a larger group of participants and different types of schools. Conclusions/Implications (including practice implications): This study suggests that pupils want the convenience and flexibility of having a school-based counselling service that is both online and offline and create strong enough connections with their counsellor to make roughly equivalent progress in both mediums. Clarity around confidentiality online may encourage more pupils to access counselling this way, as well as continued exposure to what is for many, still a new and potentially risky venture

Pinned Bilayer Wigner Crystals with Pseudospin Magnetism

We study a model of \textit{pinned} bilayer Wigner crystals (WC) and focus on the effects of interlayer coherence (IC) on pinning. We consider both a pseudospin ferromagnetic WC (FMWC) with IC and a pseudospin antiferromagnetic WC (AFMWC) without IC. Our central finding is that a FMWC can be pinned more strongly due to the presence of IC. One specific mechanism is through the disorder induced interlayer tunneling, which effectively manifests as an extra pinning in a FMWC. We also construct a general "effective disorder" model and effective pinning Hamiltonian for the case of FMWC and AFMWC respectively. Under this framework, pinning in the presence of IC involves \textit{interlayer} spatial correlation of disorder in addition to intralayer correlation, leading to \textit{enhanced} pinning in the FMWC. The pinning mode frequency (\wpk) of a FMWC is found to decease with the effective layer separation, whereas for an AFMWC the opposite behavior is expected. An abrupt drop of \wpk is predicted at a transition from a FMWC to AFMWC. Possible effects of in-plane magnetic fields and finite temperatures are addressed. Finally we discuss some other possible ramifications of the FMWC as an electronic supersolid-like phase.Comment: Slightly revised. The final version is published on PR

Media Erasure: A 1904 Lynching in St. Charles, Arkansas

    Get PDF
As Americans grew increasingly interested in historic racial violence following the Black Lives Matter movement in 2021, select news publications chose to publish apologetic editorials and articles that addressed their failure of inclusive reporting for the last century (Lancaster, 2021; Fannin, 2020). In the theme of acknowledging past mistakes, the Printing Hate project emerged to investigate the power white-owned papers had in influencing lynching incidents in the county (Capital News Service, 2021). The present study examines one Arkansas lynching in 1904 St. Charles. The incident includes the death of 13 Black men. Findings from a content analysis of 70 original newspaper articles suggest media erasure – omission and inaccuracies – as reported by the initial journalists. Analysis shows that this has largely resulted in a forgotten history. Furthermore, interviews with prominent state officials, historians and the victims’ descendants showed an overall lack of knowledge of the lynching, which one historian, Vince Vinikas, wrote may be the “single deadliest lynching in American history” (Vinikas, 1999). Descendants provided new details of the events that occurred nearly 120 years ago, and for the first time, the voice of African Americans led the narrative of their ancestors’ deaths. Findings also suggest the large absence in St. Charles and Southeast Arkansas concerning the event – from a decreasing African-American population, to the removal of prominent Black gathering places and a lack of memorial to the lynching – has also contributed to the erasure

The Design of E-Learning Resources for Part-time Distance Education Students

This research assessed the current e-learning provision for Ibec postgraduate students at DIT. The current e-learning resources are delivered using Webcourses (Blackboard), which is the Institute’s Learning Management System (LMS).1 The first stage of the research involved an audit of the existing e-learning resources on Webcourses, discussions with colleagues and a review of the e-learning literature. This research indicated that there were five key elements required in the programme’s e-learning design, namely: user experience, assessment, module content, interactivity of content and the updating of module content. A number of amendments were made in order to provide standardisation and to enhance the user experience. During the programme committee review meetings with student representatives details of the e-learning design project work were shared to keep students informed of the developments. The second part of the research involved a student survey to ascertain students” views on the five key elements and to measure student satisfaction and feedback. The research validated the five key elements which should be used for effective e-learning design. Five recommendations are made to the institute: (1) provide further details to support the five key elements, (2) include support material to assist programme and teaching staff in developing and implementing these elements in day-to-day activities, (3) continue to improve e-learning design and (5) regularly collect feedback specifically on the e-learning/LMS provision for the Ibec Global Graduates programme
