The article gives a review about the development of onomastics in Leipzig, beginning with first publications about Lithuanian personal names in 1909 by a famous representative of Slavonic linguistics. Further the survey shows the merits of Slavonic linguists for onomastics in scientific discourse with other philologists. Three different stages of its development since the Second World War are characterised specifically: the time of orientation in the new scientific area, the formation of an interdisciplinary group of researchers in 1953 and their regular national and international publications since 1956. This developmental period of Onomastic research was based on international co-operation and various projects, one of which is reflected by the increasing popularity of this journal as an internationally distributed and acclaimed paper. The main directions, questions, intentions, projects, and aims as well as the results in onomastics are described and illustrated in this article. A new period in Onomastic research began in 1990, which includes new perspectives and the creation of the academic subject "Onomastics" which is increasingly popular with students. And since then a new quality of public relation of onomastics on TV and other media can be noted

The article discusses some place-names. These are the names of fortifications owned by vassals during medieval times (fiefdoms) and situated in the middle of Germany. The reviewed toponyms can be considered as examples for a linguistic explanation with regard to different extralinguistical and regional conditions. The article aims at demonstrating the absolute necessity of cooperation and interaction of various scientific disciplines with specialists in toponymy to avoid misjudgments. Thus it is important for vaious studies to work together in finding the correct reasons in naming of geographical phenomena in the first place

The toponym Merseburg and its mystery. ‒ The article is focused on the history of the local name Merseburg, the name of a town at the river Saale in Eastern Germany. Because this river was a borderline between Germanic and Slavonic tribes the possibilities of Slavic origin are discussed and finally negated. The historical forms documented since more than thousand years allow the reconstruction of an already Germanic or Old Low German name *Marsiburg and later Mersiburg with the meaning ‘high and secure place’. This new proposal is founded on facts from the history of the German language and dialectology

Leipzig – Slavonic origin can be possible. This article is a positive and critical reflection on the opinion of Bernd Koenitz in this volume. The paper is an answer and tries to give acceptable reconstructions also by reason of the historical tradition of the local name Leipzig. The aim is to continue the discussion about the difficulties connected with the interpretation of the historical forms of the local name. Therefore some particularities in the process of reconstruction will be shown. On the one side the experience after a long time of investigations in the field of Slavonic-German contacts allows agreeing with a primary Slavic name formation. But the attempt to reconstruct further derivations of the primary Slavic form of the toponym is refused. Therefore on the other hand more convincing reconstructed Slavic forms are given
