Method for Flavor Tagging in Neutral B Meson Decays

A method is proposed for tagging the flavor of neutral BB mesons in the study of CP-violating decay asymmetries. The method makes use of a possible difference in interactions in BπB \pi or BπB^* \pi systems with isospins 1/2 and 3/2, and would be particularly clean if the I=1/2I = 1/2 systems can be detected as ``BB^{**}'' resonances.Comment: Submitted to Phys. S_3 Symmetry and Neutrino Masses and Mixings

    Get PDF
Based on a universal seesaw mass matrix model with three scalars \phi_i, and by assuming an S_3 flavor symmetry for the Yukawa interactions, the lepton masses and mixings are investigated systematically. In order to understand the observed neutrino mixing, the charged leptons (e, \mu, \tau) are regarded as the 3 elements (e_1, e_2, e_3) of S_3, while the neutrino mass-eigenstates are regarded as the irreducible representation (\nu_\eta, \nu_\sigma, \nu_\pi) of S_3, where (\nu_\pi, \nu_\eta) and \nu_\sigma are a doublet and a singlet, respectively, which are composed of the 3 elements (\nu_1, \nu_2, \nu_3) of S_3.Comment: 16 pages, no figure, version to appear in EPJ-

Primary accumulation in the Soviet transition

    Get PDF
The Soviet background to the idea of primary socialist accumulation is presented. The mobilisation of labour power and of products into public sector investment from outside are shown to have been the two original forms of the concept. In Soviet primary accumulation the mobilisation of labour power was apparently more decisive than the mobilisation of products. The primary accumulation process had both intended and unintended results. Intended results included bringing most of the economy into the public sector, and industrialisation of the economy as a whole. Unintended results included substantial economic losses, and the proliferation of coercive institutions damaging to attainment of the ultimate goal - the building of a communist society

MRI and gravimetric studies of hydrology in drip irrigated heaps and its effect on the propagation of bioleaching microorganisms

Heap bioleaching performance is dependent on the contacting of the leach solution with the ore bed, hence on the system hydrodynamics. In this study two experimental setups were used to examine hydrodynamics associated with irrigation from a single drip emitter, one of the most common methods of heap irrigation. A specialist magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method which is insensitive to the metal content of the ore was used to examine the liquid flow into an ore bed in the immediate vicinity of an irrigation point. The distribution of liquid in, microbial colonisation of and mineral recovery from a bioleach of a large scale 132 kg “ore slice” were subsequently monitored using sample ports positioned along the breadth and height of the reactor. In both systems the lateral movement of the liquid increased with bed depth, though preferential flow was evident. The majority of the liquid flow was in the region directly below the irrigation point and almost no liquid exchange occurred in the areas of lowest liquid content at the upper corners of the bed in which fluid exchange was driven by capillary action. The MRI studies revealed that the liquid distribution was unchanging following an initial settling of the ore bed and that, at steady state, the majority (~60%) of the liquid flowed directly into established large channels. The limited lateral movement of the liquid had a significant impact on the local leaching efficiencies and microbial colonisation of the ore with cell concentrations in the regions of lowest liquid content lying below the detection limit. Hence poor lateral liquid distribution with drip irrigation, and the associated impact on colonisation was identified as a significant disadvantage of this irrigation approach. Further, the need to optimise fluid exchange throughout the ore bed was identified as key for optimisation of leaching performance

Ulocuplumab (BMS-936564 / MDX1338): a fully human anti-CXCR4 antibody induces cell death in chronic lymphocytic leukemia mediated through a reactive oxygen species-dependent pathway.

The CXCR4 receptor (Chemokine C-X-C motif receptor 4) is highly expressed in different hematological malignancies including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). The CXCR4 ligand (CXCL12) stimulates CXCR4 promoting cell survival and proliferation, and may contribute to the tropism of leukemia cells towards lymphoid tissues. Therefore, strategies targeting CXCR4 may constitute an effective therapeutic approach for CLL. To address that question, we studied the effect of Ulocuplumab (BMS-936564), a fully human IgG4 anti-CXCR4 antibody, using a stroma--CLL cells co-culture model. We found that Ulocuplumab (BMS-936564) inhibited CXCL12 mediated CXCR4 activation-migration of CLL cells at nanomolar concentrations. This effect was comparable to AMD3100 (Plerixafor--Mozobil), a small molecule CXCR4 inhibitor. However, Ulocuplumab (BMS-936564) but not AMD3100 induced apoptosis in CLL at nanomolar concentrations in the presence or absence of stromal cell support. This pro-apoptotic effect was independent of CLL high-risk prognostic markers, was associated with production of reactive oxygen species and did not require caspase activation. Overall, these findings are evidence that Ulocuplumab (BMS-936564) has biological activity in CLL, highlight the relevance of the CXCR4-CXCL12 pathway as a therapeutic target in CLL, and provide biological rationale for ongoing clinical trials in CLL and other hematological malignancies

On the degree of scale invariance of inflationary perturbations

    Get PDF
Many, if not most, inflationary models predict the power-law index of the spectrum of density perturbations is close to one, though not precisely equal to one, |n-1| \sim O(0.1), implying that the spectrum of density perturbations is nearly, but not exactly, scale invariant. Some models allow n to be significantly less than one (n \sim 0.7); a spectral index significantly greater than one is more difficult to achieve. We show that n \approx 1 is a consequence of the slow-roll conditions for inflation and ``naturalness,'' and thus is a generic prediction of inflation. We discuss what is required to deviate significantly from scale invariance, and then show, by explicit construction, the existence of smooth potentials that satisfy all the conditions for successful inflation and give nn as large as 2.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. A hazard analysis method for systematic identification of safety requirements for user interface software in medical devices

© Springer International Publishing AG (outside the US) 2017. Formal methods technologies have the potential to verify the usability and safety of user interface (UI) software design in medical devices, enabling significant reductions in use errors and consequential safety incidents with such devices. This however depends on comprehensive and verifiable safety requirements to leverage these techniques for detecting and preventing flaws in UI software that can induce use errors. This paper presents a hazard analysis method that extends Leveson’s System Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) with a comprehensive set of causal factor categories, so as to provide developers with clear guidelines for systematic identification of use-related hazards associated with medical devices, their causes embedded in UI software design, and safety requirements for mitigating such hazards. The method is evaluated with a case study on the Gantry-2 radiation therapy system, which demonstrates that (1) as compared to standard STPA, our method allowed us to identify more UI software design issues likely to cause use-related hazards; and (2) the identified UI software design issues facilitated the definition of precise, verifiable safety requirements for UI software, which could be readily formalized in verification tools such as Prototype Verification System (PVS).- U.S. Food and Drug Administration(NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000016)Sandy Weininger (FDA), Scott Thiel (Navigant Consulting, Inc.), Michelle Jump (Stryker), Stefania Gnesi (ISTI/CNR) and the CHI+MED team (www.chi-med.ac.uk) provided useful feedback and inputs. An X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) study of Fe ordering in a synthetic MgAl₂O₄ – Fe₃O₄ (spinel – magnetite) solid solution series; implications for magnetic properties.

    Get PDF
Fe L₂,₃-edge XAS and XMCD studies have been used to unravel structural trends in the MgAl₂O₄-Fe₃O₄ solid solution where thermodynamic modelling has presented a challenge due to the complex ordering arrangements of the end-members. Partitioning of Fe³⁺ and Fe²⁺ between tetrahedral (Td) and octahedral (Oh) sites has been established. In the most Fe-rich samples, despite rapid quenching from a disordered state, Fe²⁺_Td is not present, which matches the ordered, inverse spinel nature of end-member magnetite (Mgt) at room-T. However, in intermediate compositions Al and Mg substantially replace Fe and small amounts of Fe²⁺_Td are found, stabilized or trapped by decreasing occurrence of the continuous nearest neighbour Fe – Fe interactions which facilitate charge redistribution by electron transfer. Furthermore, in the composition range ~Mgt₀.₄₋₀.₉, XAS and XMCD bonding and site occupancy data suggest that nano- scale, magnetite-like Fe clusters are present. By contrast, at the spinel-rich end of the series, Mgt₀.₁₇and Mgt₀.₂₃ have a homogeneous long-range distribution of Fe, Mg and Al. These relationships are consistent with the intermediate and Fe-rich samples falling within a wide solvus in this system such that the Fe- clusters occur as proto-nuclei for phases which would exsolve following development of long-range crystalline order during slow cooling. Unit cell edges calculated from the spectroscopy-derived site occupancies show excellent agreement with those measured by X-ray powder diffraction on the bulk samples. Calculated saturation magnetic moments (M_s) for the Fe-rich samples also show excellent agreement with measured values but for the most Mg-rich samples are displaced to slightly higher values; this displacement is due to the presence of abundant Mg and Al disrupting the anti-parallel alignment of electron spins for Fe atoms
