Model for the structure function constant for index of refraction fluctuations in Rayleigh-Benard turbulence
A model for the structure function constant associated with index of
refraction fluctuations in Rayleigh-Benard turbulence is developed. The model
is based upon the following assumptions: (1) the turbulence is homogeneous and
isotropic at or near the mid-plane, (2) the rate of production is in balance
with the rate of dissipation, (3) an inertial region exists, and (4) estimates
for the rate of dissipation of temperature fluctuations and of turbulent
kinetic energy can be made by assuming that the large-scale turbulence is
dissipated in one eddy turnover time. From these assumptions, the dependence of
the structure function on the geometry, heat flux, and the properties of the
fluid is obtained. The model predicts that the normalized structure function
constant is independent of the Rayleigh number. To verify the model, numerical
simulations of Rayleigh-Benard turbulence were performed using two different
approaches: an in-house code based on a pseudo-spectral method, and a finite
volume code which employs a model for the smallest scales of the turbulence.
The model was found to agree with the results of the simulations, thereby

Generation of Laminar Vortex Rings by an Impulsive Body Force
It is shown that laminar vortex rings can be generated by impulsive body
forces having particular spatial and temporal characteristics. The method
produces vortex rings in a fluid initially at rest, and once generated, the
flow field automatically satisfies the boundary conditions and is
divergence-free. Numerical simulations and analytical models show that the
strength of these rings can be accurately predicted by considering diffusion
alone, despite the nonlinear nature of the generation process. A particularly
simple model, which approximates the source of vorticity within vertical slabs,
is proposed. This model predicts the ring circulation almost as accurately as a
model which uses the exact geometry of the source of vorticity. It is found
that when the duration of the force is less than a time scale based on the
force radius and fluid viscosity, the ring circulation can be predicted
accurately using an inviscid model.Comment: 37 pages, 11 figure
Numerical Solution of the Radiation Transport Equation at an Air-Water Interface for a Stratified Medium
This paper is a continuation of previous work that analytically examined the strength of radiation leaving an air-water interface. The approach here is to numerically integrate the radiation transport equation in order to capture the non-linear features of the problem, and also to include more realistic models for the thermal boundary layer. The radiation intensity of the photons emitted from the interface, relative to that of thermal radiation at the temperature of the interface, is defined here as the signal. This signal was computed for constant surface temperature and constant heat flux boundary conditions. As expected, the numerical computations show that the signal increased as the air-water temperature difference increased. The results are shown to form a hierarchy of signal strengths based on the chosen thermal stratification model. However, for both boundary conditions, the numerical results for a linear temperature profile compared very favorably with the simplified analytical linearized model over the thermal wavebands of 3–5 and 8–14 microns. Polyacrylamide in Glycerol Solutions From an Atomistic Perspective of the Energetics, Structure, and Dynamics
All-atom molecular dynamics is used to investigate the structural, energetic, and dynamical properties of polyacrylamide (PAM) oligomers of different lengths solvated in pure glycerol, a 90:10 glycerol–water mixture, and pure water. We predict that the oligomers’ globular structure is obtained only when the modeling strategy considers the solvent as a continuous background. Meanwhile, for all-atom modeled solvents, the glycerol solutions display a strong tendency of trapping the oligomers in instantaneous elongated random coiled structures that remain locked-in over tens of nanoseconds. In pure water, the oligomers acquire considerably shorter random coiled structures of increased flexibility. The all-atom force field, generalized amber force field, is modified by including restrained electrostatic potential atomic charges for both glycerol and PAM. Three PAM oligomer lengths containing 10, 20, and 30 monomers are considered in detail by monitoring the radius of gyration, end-to-end distance, intra-potential energy, and solvent–oligomer interaction energies for decades of nanoseconds. The density and radial distribution function of glycerol solutions are calculated when modeled with the modified atomic charges, showing a very good agreement with the experimental results at temperatures around 300 K. Glycerol has multiple applications, including its use in gel formation for PAM gel electrophoresis. Our findings are relevant for the design of sensors based on microfluidics and tailored pharmaceutical buffer solutions

Nocturia as an Unrecognized Symptom of Uncontrolled Hypertension in Black Men Aged 35 to 49 Years.
Background Hypertension is assumed to be asymptomatic. Yet, clinically significant nocturia (≥2 nightly voids) constitutes a putative symptom of uncontrolled hypertension. Black men with hypertension may be prone to nocturia because of blunted nocturnal blood pressure ( BP ) dipping, diuretic drug use for hypertension, and comorbidity that predisposes to nocturia. Here, we test the hypothesis that nocturia is a common and potentially reversible symptom of uncontrolled hypertension in black men. Methods and Results We determined the strength of association between nocturia (≥2 nightly voids) and high BP (≥135/85 mm Hg) by conducting in-person health interviews and measuring BP with an automated monitor in a large community-based sample of black men in their barbershops. Because nocturia is prevalent and steeply age-dependent after age 50 years, we studied men aged 35 to 49 years. Among 1673 black men (mean age, 43±4 years [ SD ]), those with hypertension were 56% more likely than men with normotension to have nocturia after adjustment for diabetes mellitus and sleep apnea (adjusted odds ratio, 1.56; 95% CI , 1.25-1.94 [ P<0.0001]). Nocturia prevalence varied by hypertension status, ranging from 24% in men with normotension to 49% in men whose hypertension was medically treated but uncontrolled. Men with untreated hypertension were 39% more likely than men with normotension to report nocturia ( P=0.02), whereas men whose hypertension was treated and controlled were no more likely than men with normotension to report nocturia ( P=0.69). Conclusions Uncontrolled hypertension was an independent determinant of clinically important nocturia in a large cross-sectional community-based study of non-Hispanic black men aged 35 to 49 years. Organizational Configurations and Performance: A Meta-Analysis
The link between organizational configurations and performance has become a central and somewhat controversial focus of research in the strategic management literature, We statistically aggregated results from 40 original tests of the configurations-performance relationship. In contrast to previous qualitative reviews, this meta-analysis demonstrated that an organization\u27s performance is partially explained by its configuration. Tests of four potential moderators showed that organizations\u27 configurations contributed more to performance explanation to the extent that studies used (1) broad definitions of configurations, (2) single-industry samples, and (3) longitudinal designs, Results highlight the need for programmatic research
Reputation in European Trade Mark Law: A Re-examination
Under the harmonised European trade mark regime marks with a reputation enjoy expanded protection. This article casts doubt on whether this ‘reputational trigger’ can be justified. It then explores some difficult operational questions about the way the reputation threshold works in cases where the mark enjoys fame only in niche markets or in a limited geographical area, the aim being to illustrate further why reputation is an unsatisfactory trigger for a different type of trade mark protection. Finally, it looks at some of the evidential difficulties involved in adjudicating disputes in which expanded protection is being claimed. It concludes by suggesting that if the evidential problems we identify were tackled the reputation threshold could be abandoned
Comparison of Radiation Transport Codes, HZETRN, HETC and FLUKA, Using the 1956 Webber SPE Spectrum
Protection of astronauts and instrumentation from galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and solar particle events (SPE) in the harsh environment of space is of prime importance in the design of personal shielding, spacec raft, and mission planning. Early entry of radiation constraints into the design process enables optimal shielding strategies, but demands efficient and accurate tools that can be used by design engineers in every phase of an evolving space project. The radiation transport code , HZETRN, is an efficient tool for analyzing the shielding effectiveness of materials exposed to space radiation. In this paper, HZETRN is compared to the Monte Carlo codes HETC-HEDS and FLUKA, for a shield/target configuration comprised of a 20 g/sq cm Aluminum slab in front of a 30 g/cm^2 slab of water exposed to the February 1956 SPE, as mode led by the Webber spectrum. Neutron and proton fluence spectra, as well as dose and dose equivalent values, are compared at various depths in the water target. This study shows that there are many regions where HZETRN agrees with both HETC-HEDS and FLUKA for this shield/target configuration and the SPE environment.
