    Helmet weight simulator

    Get PDF
A device for providing acceleration cues to the helmet of a simulator pilot is described. Pulleys are attached to both shoulders of the pilot. A cable is attached to both sides of the helmet and extends through the pulleys to a takeup reel that is controlled by a torque motor. Control signals are applied to a servo system including the torque motor, the takeup reel and a force transducer which supplies the feedback signal. In one embodiment of the invention the force transducer is in the cable and in another it is in the takeup reel

A Study for a Tracking Trigger at First Level for CMS at SLHC

It is expected that the LHC accelerator and experiments will undergo a luminosity upgrade which will commence after several years of running. This part of the LHC operations is referred to as Super-LHC (SLHC) and is expected to provide beams of an order of magnitude larger luminosity (1035cm-2sec-1) than the current design. Preliminary results are presented from a feasibility study for a First Level Tracking Trigger for CMS at the SLHC using the data of the inner tracking detector. As a model for these studies the current CMS pixel detector with the same pixel size and radial distances from the beam has been used. Monte Carlo studies have been performed using the full CMS simulation package (OSCAR) and the occupancy of such a detector at SLHC beam conditions has been calculated. The design of an electron trigger which uses both the calorimeter energy depositions and the pixel data to identify isolated electrons and photons has been investigated. Results on the tracker occupancy and the electron trigger performance are presentedComment: Presented at LECC, Heidelberg 200

BlackWatch:increasing attack awareness within web applications

    Get PDF
Web applications are relied upon by many for the services they provide. It is essential that applications implement appropriate security measures to prevent security incidents. Currently, web applications focus resources towards the preventative side of security. Whilst prevention is an essential part of the security process, developers must also implement a level of attack awareness into their web applications. Being able to detect when an attack is occurring provides applications with the ability to execute responses against malicious users in an attempt to slow down or deter their attacks. This research seeks to improve web application security by identifying malicious behaviour from within the context of web applications using our tool BlackWatch. The tool is a Python-based application which analyses suspicious events occurring within client web applications, with the objective of identifying malicious patterns of behaviour. This approach avoids issues typically encountered with traditional web application firewalls. Based on the results from a preliminary study, BlackWatch was effective at detecting attacks from both authenticated, and unauthenticated users. Furthermore, user tests with developers indicated BlackWatch was user friendly, and was easy to integrate into existing applications. Future work seeks to develop the BlackWatch solution further for public release

Beyond knowledge brokerage: an exploratory study of innovation intermediaries in an evolving smallholder agricultural system in Kenya

    Get PDF
The recognition that innovation occurs in networks of heterogeneous actors and requires broad systemic support beyond knowledge brokering has resulted in a changing landscape of the intermediary domain in an increasingly market-driven agricultural sector in developing countries. This paper presents findings of an explorative case study that looked at 22 organisations identified as fulfilling an intermediary role in the Kenyan agricultural sector. The results show that these organisations fulfill functions that are not limited to distribution of knowledge and putting it into use. The functions also include fostering integration and interaction among the diverse actors engaged in innovation networks and working on technological, organisational and institutional innovation. Further, the study identified various organisational arrangements of innovation intermediaries with some organisations fulfilling a specialised innovation brokering role, even as other intermediaries take on brokering as a side activity, while still substantively contributing to the innovation process. Based on these findings we identify a typology of 4 innovation intermediation arrangements, including technology brokers, systemic brokers, enterprise development support and input access support. The results indicate that innovation brokering is a pervasive task in supporting innovation and will require policy support to embed it in innovation support arrangements. The paper is not normative about these arrangements

Investigation of the feasibility of CARS measurements in scramjet combustion

    Get PDF
Results are presented of analytical and experimental investigations to determine the feasibility of using coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) to measure temperature and species concentration in supersonic combustion experiments. The CARS spectra of H2O, O2 and H2 were measured in laboratory flames. Computer code calculated spectra agree very well with the measured spectra. Temperature, and O2 and H2 concentration profiles have been determined from CARS spectra in a laboratory H2 air flat diffusion flame. Temperature measurements agree with radiation corrected thermocouple measurements within 5 to 10 percent, depending on species concentration. The feasibility of measuring O2 concentrations up to 10 percent, from the spectral shape was demonstrated. H2 concentrations determined from CARS intensities agree with spontaneous Raman measurements within a factor of two. Finally, a conceptual design was formulated for diagnostics in the Langley Research Center scramjet combustion facility
