    Extinction and Non-Extinction of Solutions to a p-Laplace Equation with a Nonlocal Source and an Absorption Term

    In this short paper, the authors investigate the extinction and non-extinction of solutions to a fast diffusive p-Laplace equation with a nonlocal source and an absorption term. By applying the super-solution and sub-solution methods, instead of energy estimate methods, they give a classification of the exponents and coefficients for the solutions to vanish in finite time or not, which generalizes some previous results

    Proteins Identified from Saliva and Salivary Glands of the Chinese Gall Aphid Schlechtendalia chinensis

    Aphid saliva plays an essential role in the interaction between aphids and their host plants. Several aphid salivary proteins have been identified but none from galling aphids. Here the salivary proteins from the Chinese gall aphid are analyzed, Schlechtendalia chinensis, via an LC-MS/MS analysis. A total of 31 proteins are identified directly from saliva collected via an artificial diet, and 141 proteins are identified from extracts derived from dissected salivary glands. Among these identified proteins, 17 are found in both collected saliva and dissected salivary glands. In comparison with salivary proteins from ten other free-living Hemipterans, the most striking feature of the salivary protein from S. chinensis is the existence of high proportion of proteins with binding activity, including DNA-, protein-, ATP-, and iron-binding proteins. These proteins maybe involved in gall formation. These results provide a framework for future research to elucidate the molecular basis for gall induction by galling aphids

    Frequency-diverse MIMO metasurface antenna for computational imaging with aperture rotation technique

    Metasurface antennas have been proposed for computational imaging (CI) systems, which can reconstruct images without using mechanical scanning or large antenna arrays. In a CI system based on metasurface antennas, a variety of different radiation fields, which can be applied to sample the objects, are generated by exciting different frequency points in broadband. According to the compressed sensing theory, the imaging performance of the system is mainly limited by frequency-diversity radiation modes. In general, it is difficult to achieve rich radiation modes; therefore, a special design of metasurface aperture is required. In this paper, we propose a frequency-diversity MIMO metasurface antenna that consists of 2 Ă— 2 sub-apertures with randomly distributed surface impedance. By employing the aperture rotation technique (ART) which rotates the MIMO metasurface antenna around the panel axis, the pseudo-randomness of the radiation fields is utilized. The diversity of the radiation field is improved on the premise of ensuring the relatively low complexity of the system. The ART significantly improves the measurement richness at the cost of increasing the measurement time. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated through simulations and experiments, suggesting that the proposed 2 Ă— 2 MIMO metasurface antenna and the ART are effective to reconstruct high-quality images

    Extracts of Cistanche deserticola

    The senescence accelerated mouse prone 8 substrain (SAM-P8), widely accepted as an animal model for studying aging and antiaging drugs, was used to examine the effects of dietary supplementation with extracts of Cistanche deserticola (ECD) which has been used extensively in traditional Chinese medicine because of its perceived ability to promote immune function in the elderly. Eight-month-old male SAM-P8 mice were treated with ECD by daily oral administrations for 4 weeks. The results showed that dietary supplementation of 150 mg/kg and 450 mg/kg of ECD could extend the life span measured by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis in dose-dependent manner. Dietary supplementation of SAM-P8 mice for 4 weeks with 100, 500, and 2500 mg/kg of ECD was shown to result in significant increases in both naive T and natural killer cells in blood and spleen cell populations. In contrast, peripheral memory T cells and proinflammatory cytokine, IL-6 in serum, were substantially decreased in the mice that ingested 100 and 500 mg/kg of ECD daily. Additionally, Sca-1 positive cells, the recognized progenitors of peripheral naive T cells, were restored in parallel. Our results provide clear experimental support for long standing clinical observational studies showing that Cistanche deserticola possesses significant effects in extending life span and suggest this is achieved by antagonizing immunosenescence

    The Effects of Scleral Collagen Cross-Linking Using Glyceraldehyde on the Progression of Form-Deprived Myopia in Guinea Pigs

    To investigate the effects of collagen cross-linking using glyceraldehyde on the biomechanical properties of the sclera and the axial elongation of form-deprived myopia in the guinea pig. Thirty-six guinea pigs were randomly assigned to four groups: FDM (form-deprived myopia); FDMG (form-deprived myopia treated with glyceraldehyde); FDMS (form-deprived myopia treated with 0.9% isotonic sodium chloride); and normal control (free of form-deprivation). FDM was achieved in the right eye using a latex facemask. The right eye in FDMG was treated with a posterior subtenon injection of 0.5 M glyceraldehyde; 0.9% isotonic sodium chloride was administered to the right eye in FDMS group using the same method. Axial length, refraction, and stress-strain of the sclera were measured at scheduled time points. The treated eyes were also examined histologically by light microscopy. It was found that glyceraldehyde treatment significantly increased the stiffness of the sclera in the FDM eyes and abnormalities have not been observed in the retina and optic nerve of the treated eyes. But the development of myopia was not affected
