Inverse gas chromatography was used to determine retention volumes and isosteric heats of adsorption for several probes on wool and descaled wool. Plots of retention volumes against peak areas showed different shapes for several systems. This fact indicated that the sorption behavior of these systems was affected by the interaction between each probe and the stationary phase of gas chromatography. Heats of adsorption were found to be similar values to the corresponding heats of evaporation of the probes, which was interpreted in terms of random mixing of probe molecules on wool

Equilibrium water sorption isotherms for wool fibers were obtained and the sorptive capacity of these fibers was discussed with respect to the effect of descaling. Taking into account both equilibrium and kinetic data, the effect of descaling on these water sorption behaviors was obvious. The BET sorption mechanism was obeyed by these water/wool systems in the relative humidities ranging from about 10% 40%

Washing efficiencies were studied for four kinds of commercial detergents; two weremainly composed of linier alkylbenzene sulfonate(LAS)and the other two mainly ofsodium salt of fatty acids. The concentration range was set to 0 -0.4% and the temperaturesto 30, 40 and 60℃. The mechanical contributions to the efficiency were compared with aTerg-O-Tometer and a Launder-O-Meter.With the concentration of the detergents, the efficiencies became high to the maximumones close to the recommended usage concentrations. Generally the efficiencies weremaintained or slightly lowered at higher concentrations. Within the temperature range, and the efficiencies showed maxima at 40℃ except B composed of sodium salt of fattyacids which showed increasing trend in the efficiency with temperature. With Terg-OTometer,the efficiencies were higher by almost 30% than those with Launder-O-Meter

Two kinds of artificially soiled cloths prepared from the organic solvent menthod and the aqueous dispersion one were utilized in these experiments. The artificially soiled cloths were washed with household detergents (T, A and PA) by a household washing machine. The behavior of soil removal depended on the sort of artificially soiled doths. The change of detergency with detergent cocentration suggested that the redeposition of dirt after its removal from a substrate would make a contribution to the decrease of reflectance
