    Unselective regrowth of 1.5-Îźm InGaAsP multiple-quantum-well distributed-feedback buried heterostructure lasers

    Unselective regrowth for fabricating 1.5-μm InGaAsP multiple-quantum well (MQW) distributed-feedback (DFB) buried heterostructure (BH) lasers is developed. The experimental results exhibit superior characteristics, such as a low threshold of 8.5mA, high slope efficiency of 0.55mW∕mA, circular-like far-field patterns, the narrow linewidth of 2.5MHz, etc. The high performance of the devices effectively proves the feasibility of the new method to fabricate buried heterostructure lasers

    Physical and chemical signatures of a developing anticyclonic eddy in the Leeuwin Current, eastern Indian Ocean

    A multidisciplinary cruise aboard the R/V Southern Surveyor was conducted in May 2006 to sample a developing anticyclonic eddy of the Leeuwin Current off Western Australia. The eddy formed from a meander of the Leeuwin Current in mid-April 2006 and remained attached to the current until mid-August. In this study, a combination of satellite data (altimeter, sea surface temperature, and chlorophyll a) and shipboard measurements (acoustic Doppler current profiler and conductivity-temperature-depth) were used to characterize the physical and chemical signatures of the eddy. The temperature-salinity properties of the mixed layer waters within the anticyclonic eddy and on the shelf were both connected to that of the Leeuwin Current, indicating the water mass in the eddy is mainly derived from the Leeuwin Current and the modified Leeuwin Current water on the shelf. Above the salinity maximum near the eddy center, there was a regionally significant concentration of nitrate (>0.9 Îźmol L-1), and the maximum (2 Îźmol L-1) was at 150 in depth, below the photic zone. Nitrification within the eddy and/or local upwelling due to the forming eddy could be responsible for this high concentration of nitrate near the eddy center which potentially makes the eddy a relatively productive feature in the Leeuwin Current

    Cultural Perspective on Parenting, Trait Emotional Intelligence and Mental Health in Taiwanese Children

    The current study aims to clarify the associations as well as the pathways through which parenting and children's emotional intelligence (EI) may influence children's mental health with a cross-sectional sample of 675 school pupils (fourth grade, mean age = 10.4 years, 310 boy, 356 girls and 9 unidentified) in Taiwan. Hierarchical regression and path analyses were used to examine the relationships between parenting styles, children's trait EI, and their psychological symptoms, with children's psychological symptoms as the dependent variable. The results showed that authoritative parenting was positively associated with children‟s trait EI, which in turn had a negative effect on children‟s psychological symptoms, whereas authoritarian and Chinese-specific parenting styles had direct negative effect on children‟s psychological symptoms. These findings shed light on the pathways of the interrelations between different parenting styles, children's trait EI, and psychological symptoms, providing theoretical as well as practical implications for children's emotional development and mental health

    Anomalous c-axis charge dynamics in copper oxide materials

    Within the t-J model, the c-axis charge dynamics of the copper oxide materials in the underdoped and optimally doped regimes is studied by considering the incoherent interlayer hopping. It is shown that the c-axis charge dynamics is mainly governed by the scattering from the in-plane fluctuation. In the optimally doped regime, the c-axis resistivity is a linear in temperatures, and shows the metallic-like behavior for all temperatures, while the c-axis resistivity in the underdoped regime is characterized by a crossover from the high temperature metallic-like behavior to the low temperature semiconducting-like behavior, which are consistent with experiments and numerical simulations.Comment: 6 pages, Latex, Three figures are adde

    The estimation of the backgrounds for gluino signals in focus point supersymmetry is extended by including the backgrounds from the production of four third generation quarks in the analysis. We find that these backgrounds are negligible if one uses the strong selection criteria proposed in the literature (including this analysis) for heavy gluino searches. Softer selection criteria often recommended for lighter gluino searches yield backgrounds which are small but numerically significant. We have also repeated the more conventional background calculations and compared our results with the other groups. We find that the size of the total residual background estimated by different groups using different event generators and hard kinematical cuts agree approximately. In view of the theoretical uncertainties in the leading order signal and background cross sections mainly due to the choice of the QCD scale, the gluino mass reach at the LHC cannot be pinpointed. However, requiring a signal with ≥3\rm\geq 3 tagged b-jets (instead of the standard choice of ≥2\rm\geq 2) it is shown that gluino masses close to 2 TeV can be probed at the LHC for a range of reasonable choices of the QCD scale for an integrated luminosity of 300 fb−1^{-1}.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, minor typos correctio

    Canted ferrimagnetism and giant coercivity in the nonstoichiometric double perovskite La2Ni1.19Os0.81O6

    The nonstoichiometric double perovskite oxide La2Ni1.19Os0.81O6 was synthesized by solid state reaction and its crystal and magnetic structures were investigated by powder x ray and neutron diffraction. La2Ni1.19Os0.81O6 crystallizes in the monoclinic double perovskite structure general formula A2B B O6 with space group P21 n, where the B site is fully occupied by Ni and the B site by 19 Ni and 81 Os atoms. Using x ray absorption spectroscopy an Os4.5 oxidation state was established, suggesting the presence of about 50 paramagnetic Os5 5d 3 , S 3 2 and 50 nonmagnetic Os4 5d 4 , J eff 0 ions at the B sites. Magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements on La2Ni1.19Os0.81O6 provide evidence for a ferrimagnetic transition at 125 K. The analysis of the neutron data suggests a canted ferrimagnetic spin structure with collinear Ni2 spin chains extending along the c axis but a noncollinear spin alignment within the ab plane. The magnetization curve of La2Ni1.19Os0.81O6 features a hysteresis with a very high coercive field, HC 41 kOe, at T 5 K, which is explained in terms of large magnetocrystalline anisotropy due to the presence of Os ions together with atomic disorder. Our results are encouraging to search for rare earth free hard magnets in the class of double perovskite oxide

    Large Deviations Principle for a Large Class of One-Dimensional Markov Processes

    We study the large deviations principle for one dimensional, continuous, homogeneous, strong Markov processes that do not necessarily behave locally as a Wiener process. Any strong Markov process XtX_{t} in R\mathbb{R} that is continuous with probability one, under some minimal regularity conditions, is governed by a generalized elliptic operator DvDuD_{v}D_{u}, where vv and uu are two strictly increasing functions, vv is right continuous and uu is continuous. In this paper, we study large deviations principle for Markov processes whose infinitesimal generator is ϵDvDu\epsilon D_{v}D_{u} where 0<ϵ≪10<\epsilon\ll 1. This result generalizes the classical large deviations results for a large class of one dimensional "classical" stochastic processes. Moreover, we consider reaction-diffusion equations governed by a generalized operator DvDuD_{v}D_{u}. We apply our results to the problem of wave front propagation for these type of reaction-diffusion equations.Comment: 23 page

    Crystal structures and magnetic properties of dimorphic Li3OsO4

    Rocksalt type oxides Li3OsO4 with disordered and ordered arrangements of Li and Os were synthesized. The disordered phase crystallizes in the ideal rocksalt structure with cubic space group , while the ordered polymorph adopts the monoclinic Na3BiO4 type structure space group P2 c . The analyses of X ray and neutron diffraction data of monoclinic Li3OsO4 indicate that there is a considerable anti site disorder of Li and Os and that the sample is nonstoichiometric [Li3.045 5 Os0.955 5 O4]. In monoclinic Li3OsO4 the OsO6 octahedra are not isolated from each other but they form edge sharing zigzag chains. Both cubic and monoclinic Li3OsO4 are electrically semiconducting. Cubic Li3OsO4 does not show any sign of magnetic order down to 2 amp; 8239;K, whereas the amp; 967; T data of monoclinic Li3OsO4 display an anomaly at 310 amp; 8239;K. However, the neutron diffraction study indicated no evidence of long range magnetic order. The anomaly at 310 amp; 8239;K may be caused by short range antiferromagnetic ordering within the individual Os chain

    PSO-based Parameter Estimation of Nonlinear Kinetic Models for β-Mannanase Fermentation

    Particle swarm optimization (PSO), as a novel evolutionary algorithm involved in social interaction for global space search, was firstly used in kinetic parameter estimation. Based on three developed nonlinear kinetic equations for bacterial cell growth, total sugar utilization and β-mannanase production by Bacillus licheniformis under the support of a batch fermentation process, various PSO algorithms as well as gene algorithms (GA) were developed to estimate kinetic parameters. The performance comparison among these algorithms indicates the improved PSO (Trelea 1) is most suitable for kinetic parameter estimation of β-mannanase fermentation. In order to find the physical-chemical-meanings of kinetic parameters from many optimized results, multiobjective optimization with a normalized weight method was adopted. The 9 desired parameters in equations were obtained by the Trelea 1 type PSO with two batches fermentation data, and the results predicted by the models were also in good agreement with the experimental observations
