Background and purpose Our aim was to prove in an animal model that the use of HA paste at the cement-bone interface in the acetabulum would improve fixation. We examined, in sheep, the effect of interposing a layer of hydroxyapatite cement around the periphery of a polyethylene socket prior to fixing it using polymethylemethacrylate (PMMA). Methods We made a randomized study involving 22 sheep to test whether the application of BoneSource hydroxyapatite material to the surface of the ovine acetabulum prior to cementing a polyethylene cup at hip arthroplasty improved the fixation and the nature of the interface. We studied the gross radiographical appearance of the implant-bone interface and the histological appearance at the interface. Results There were more radiolucencies evident in the control group. Histologically, only sheep randomized into the BoneSource group exhibited a fully osseointegrated interface. Use of the hydroxyapatite material did not confer any detrimental effects. In some cases the material appeared to have been fully resorbed. When the material was evident on histological section, it was incorporated into an osseointegrated interface. There was no giant cell reaction present in any case. There was no evidence of migration of BoneSource to the articulation. Interpretation The application of HA material prior to cementation of a socket produced an improved interface. The technique may be useful in man with to extend the longevity of the cemented implant by protecting the socket interface from the effect of hydrodynamic fluid flow and particulate debris

Positive and negative ion emission from microdroplets by MeV energy ions

XXIX International Conference on Photonic, Electronic, and Atomic Collisions (ICPEAC2015): 22–28 July 2015, Toledo, SpainWe have developed a new experimental setup that allowed us to study collision interactions between fast ion beams and liquid droplets under a vacuum condition. Droplets of water and ethanol are irradiated with 0.4-1.5 MeV H+ and 2.0 MeV C2+ ions. The droplet diameter is estimated from energy loss measurements of projectile ions penetrating through droplets. Time-of-flight mass spectra of positive and negative secondary ions exhibit a series of cluster ions generated via protonation and deprotonation

Ukupno harmoničko izobličenje i brzina prostorne modalne informacije za analizu haptičkog paralelnog gibanja

In this paper, two kinds of evaluation index for the haptic motion analysis in parallel multiple degrees–of–freedom (MDOF) system are proposed. At first, the spatial modal decomposition method based on discrete Fourier series expansion (DFS) is presented. Spatial modal information expresses a motion element that corresponds to a specific physical action. The spatial modal information can mathematically be defined by the Fourier coefficients. Then, this paper proposes the total harmonic distortion (THD) and the content rate of the haptic modal information as motion evaluation indexes. THD of the spatial modal information can evaluate the complexity of the human motion and/or the deformability of the contact environment. Content rate of the spatial modal information can evaluate the priority of motion element. Some experimental results on the bilateral motion control of a parallel five DOF haptic system are shown, in order to confirm the utility of the proposed indexes.U ovom radu predložena su dva indikatora vrednovanja haptičkog gibanja u paralelnom sustavu s više stupnjeva slobode.

Measurement and comparison of individual external doses of high-school students living in Japan, France, Poland and Belarus -- the "D-shuttle" project --

Twelve high schools in Japan (of which six are in Fukushima Prefecture), four in France, eight in Poland and two in Belarus cooperated in the measurement and comparison of individual external doses in 2014. In total 216 high-school students and teachers participated in the study. Each participant wore an electronic personal dosimeter "D-shuttle" for two weeks, and kept a journal of his/her whereabouts and activities. The distributions of annual external doses estimated for each region overlap with each other, demonstrating that the personal external individual doses in locations where residence is currently allowed in Fukushima Prefecture and in Belarus are well within the range of estimated annual doses due to the background radiation level of other regions/countries

Wear of highly crosslinked polyethylene acetabular components: a review of RSA studies

Background and purpose - Wear rates of highly crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) acetabular components have varied considerably between different published studies. This variation is in part due to the different techniques used to measure wear and to the errors inherent in measuring the relatively low amounts of wear in XLPE bearings. We undertook a scoping review of studies that have examined the in vivo wear of XLPE acetabular components using the most sensitive method available, radiostereometric analysis (RSA). Methods - A systematic search of the PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane databases was performed to identify published studies in which RSA was used to measure wear of XLPE components in primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). Results - 18 publications examined 12 primary THA cohorts, comprising only 260 THAs at 2-10 years of follow-up. The mean or median proximal wear rate reported ranged from 0.00 to 0.06 mm/year. However, differences in the manner in which wear was determined made it difficult to compare some studies. Furthermore, differences in RSA methodology between studies, such as the use of supine or standing radiographs and the use of beaded or unbeaded reference segments, may limit future meta-analyses examining the effect of patient and implant variables on wear rates. Interpretation - This scoping review confirmed the low wear rates of XLPE in THA, as measured by RSA. We make recommendations to enhance the standardization of reporting of RSA wear results, which will facilitate early identification of poorly performing implants and enable a better understanding of the effects of surgical and patient factors on wear.Stuart A Callary, Lucian B Solomon, Oksana T Holubowycz, David G Campbell, Zachary Munn, and Donald W Howi
