Inelastic cotunneling in quantum dots and molecules with weakly broken degeneracies
We calculate the nonlinear cotunneling conductance through interacting
quantum dot systems in the deep Coulomb blockade regime using a rate equation
approach based on the T-matrix formalism, which shows in the concerned regions
very good agreement with a generalized master equation approach. Our focus is
on inelastic cotunneling in systems with weakly broken degeneracies, such as
complex quantum dots or molecules. We find for these systems a characteristic
gate dependence of the non-equilibrium cotunneling conductance. While on one
side of a Coulomb diamond the conductance decreases after the inelastic
cotunneling threshold towards its saturation value, on the other side it
increases monotonously even after the threshold. We show that this behavior
originates from an asymmetric gate voltage dependence of the effective

Calculation of load distribution in stiffened cylindrical shells
Thin-walled shells with strong longitudinal and transverse stiffening (for example, stressed-skin fuselages and wings) may, under certain simplifying assumptions, be treated as static systems with finite redundancies. In this report the underlying basis for this method of treatment of the problem is presented and a computation procedure for stiffened cylindrical shells with curved sheet panels indicated. A detailed discussion of the force distribution due to applied concentrated forces is given, and the discussion illustrated by numerical examples which refer to an experimentally determined circular cylindrical shell
Infectious diseases consultation reduces 30-day and 1-year all-cause mortality for multidrug-resistant organism infections
Abstract
Background
Multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) infections are associated with high mortality and readmission rates. Infectious diseases (ID) consultation improves clinical outcomes for drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections. Our goal was to determine the association between ID consultation and mortality following various MDRO infections.
Methods
This study was conducted with a retrospective cohort (January 1, 2006–October 1, 2015) at an academic tertiary referral center. We identified patients with MDROs in a sterile site or bronchoalveolar lavage/bronchial wash culture. Mortality and readmissions within 1 year of index culture were identified, and the association of ID consultation with these outcomes was determined using Cox proportional hazards models with inverse weighting by the propensity score for ID consultation.
Results
A total of 4214 patients with MDRO infections were identified. ID consultation was significantly associated with reductions in 30-day and 1-year mortality for resistant S. aureus (hazard ratio [HR], 0.48; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.36–0.63; and HR, 0.73, 95% CI, 0.61–0.86) and Enterobacteriaceae (HR, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.27–0.64; and HR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.59–0.94), and 30-day mortality for polymicrobial infections (HR, 0.51; 95% CI, 0.31–0.86) but not Acinetobacter or Pseudomonas. For resistant Enterococcus, ID consultation was marginally associated with decreased 30-day mortality (HR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.62–1.06). ID consultation was associated with reduced 30-day readmission for resistant Enterobacteriaceae.
Conclusions
ID consultation was associated with significant reductions in 30-day and 1-year mortality for resistant S. aureus and Enterobacteriaceae, and 30-day mortality for polymicrobial infections. There was no association between ID consultation and mortality for patients with resistant Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, or Enterococcus, possibly due to small sample sizes. Our results suggest that ID consultation may be beneficial for patients with some MDRO infections.

Growing Graphs with Hyperedge Replacement Graph Grammars
Discovering the underlying structures present in large real world graphs is a
fundamental scientific problem. In this paper we show that a graph's clique
tree can be used to extract a hyperedge replacement grammar. If we store an
ordering from the extraction process, the extracted graph grammar is guaranteed
to generate an isomorphic copy of the original graph. Or, a stochastic
application of the graph grammar rules can be used to quickly create random
graphs. In experiments on large real world networks, we show that random
graphs, generated from extracted graph grammars, exhibit a wide range of
properties that are very similar to the original graphs. In addition to graph
properties like degree or eigenvector centrality, what a graph "looks like"
ultimately depends on small details in local graph substructures that are
difficult to define at a global level. We show that our generative graph model
is able to preserve these local substructures when generating new graphs and

Future expectations of Brasilian street youth
Future expectations of youth surviving on the streets of Porto Alegre, Brasil, were examined. The sample consisted of 35 boys and 34 girls aged 10–18 (M age 14.4) who participated in a sentence completion task and semi-structured interviews. Responses to two incomplete sentences regarding the future revealed a mismatch between hoped-for and expected events. When completing the sentence, “In the future, I hope…” the majority of youth gave optimistic (but generally non-specific) responses. In contrast, the sentence “For me, the future…” elicited more pessimistic responses. Few gender or age-related differences emerged. Findings are discussed in light of prior research with general populations of adolescents as well as studies of street youth. Taken as a whole, results suggest that life on the street shapes and constrains how youth see their futures. Implications of the findings for policy makers and practitioners are addressed
Experimental and analytical investigation of a monocoque wing model loaded in bending
Bending tests with transverse loads and with pure bending were undertaken on a double-web monocoque wing model in order to establish the relation between the state of stress and the results from the elementary bending theory. The longitudinal stresses in the stiffeners were measured with tensiometers and the shear stresses in the sheet were calculated from them. The measurements were made at both moderate loads with no buckles in the covering and at loads with which the critical stress in the individual panels was exceeded. For the comparison, the wing skin was considered as stiffened sheet according to the shear panel scheme. In this way, the statistically indeterminate calculation was confirmed by the test results
