Observation of two-orbital spin-exchange interactions with ultracold SU(N)-symmetric fermions
We report on the direct observation of spin-exchanging interactions in a
two-orbital SU(N)-symmetric quantum gas of ytterbium in an optical lattice. The
two orbital states are represented by two different (meta-)stable electronic
configurations of fermionic Yb-173. A strong spin-exchange between particles in
the two separate orbitals is mediated by the contact interaction between atoms,
which we characterize by clock shift spectroscopy in a 3D optical lattice. We
find the system to be SU(N)-symmetric within our measurement precision and
characterize all relevant scattering channels for atom pairs in combinations of
the ground and the excited state. Elastic scattering between the orbitals is
dominated by the antisymmetric channel, which leads to the strong spin-exchange
coupling. The exchange process is directly observed, by characterizing the
dynamic equilibration of spin imbalances between two large ensembles in the two
orbital states, as well as indirectly in atom pairs via interaction shift
spectroscopy in a 3D lattice. The realization of a stable SU(N)-symmetric
two-orbital Hubbard Hamiltonian opens the route towards experimental quantum
simulation of condensed-matter models based on orbital interactions, such as
the Kondo lattice model.Comment: Correction: In the original version of this preprint the assignment

Observation of an orbital interaction-induced Feshbach resonance in 173-Yb
We report on the experimental observation of a novel inter-orbital Feshbach
resonance in ultracold 173-Yb atoms, which opens the possibility of tuning the
interactions between the 1S0 and 3P0 metastable state, both possessing
vanishing total electronic angular momentum. The resonance is observed at
experimentally accessible magnetic field strengths and occurs universally for
all hyperfine state combinations. We characterize the resonance in the bulk via
inter-orbital cross-thermalization as well as in a three-dimensional lattice
using high-resolution clock-line spectroscopy.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Dielectric function decomposition by dipole interaction distribution: Application to triclinic K2Cr2O7
Here we present a general approach for the description for the frequency dependent dielectric tensor coefficients for optically anisotropic materials. Based on symmetry arguments we show that the components of the dielectric tensor are in general not independent of each other. For each excitation there exists an eigensystem, where its contribution to the dielectric tensor can be described by a diagonal susceptibility tensor. From the orientation of the eigensystem and the relative magnitude of the tensor elements, the dipole interaction distribution in real space can be deduced. In the limiting cases, the oriented dipole approach as well as the tensor of isotropic and uniaxial materials are obtained. The application of this model is demonstrated exemplarily on triclinic K2Cr2O7 and the orientation and directional distribution of the corresponding dipole moments in real space are determined. © 2020 The Author(s). Abstract
The aim of this study was to validate the Portuguese version of the self-administered MacNew Heart Disease Health-related Quality of Life (MacNew) questionnaire in patients after diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome. The MacNew, with a Global score and physical, emotional and social subscales, the Short Form SF-36 (SF-36) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were completed at baseline by 150 patients and again by 48 clinically stable patients 2-3 weeks later. A cohort of 50 different patients completed the same questionnaires before and after a cardiac rehabilitation program in order to examine responsiveness. Acceptance of the MacNew by the patients was good and the three factor model was substantiated and explained 52.2% of the variance. Internal consistency, intra-class-correlation, and test-retest reliability each exceeded 0.72. The predicted construct validity hypotheses were partially confirmed. The discriminative validity of the MacNew was confirmed with significantly higher MacNew scores for patients with normal left ventricular function, with improved health status, and who were not anxious or depressed. Even though MacNew scores improved significantly following cardiac rehabilitation, the evaluative validity of the MacNew was less robust with small responsiveness statistics. The Portuguese version of the MacNew HRQL questionnaire appears to be a reliable, valid, and moderately responsive instrument to evaluate health-related quality of life after diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome.

Cardiac rehabilitation in Austria: long term health-related quality of life outcomes
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The goal of cardiac rehabilitation programs is not only to prolong life but also to improve physical functioning, symptoms, well-being, and health-related quality of life (HRQL). The aim of this study was to document the long-term effect of a 1-month inpatient cardiac rehabilitation intervention on HRQL in Austria.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Patients (N = 487, 64.7% male, age 60.9 ± 12.5 SD years) after myocardial infarction, with or without percutaneous interventions, coronary artery bypass grafting or valve surgery underwent inpatient cardiac rehabilitation and were included in this long-term observational study (two years follow-up). HRQL was measured with both the MacNew Heart Disease Quality of Life Instrument [MacNew] and EuroQoL-5D [EQ-5D].</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All MacNew scale scores improved significantly (p < 0.001) and exceeded the minimal important difference (0.5 MacNew points) by the end of rehabilitation. Although all MacNew scale scores deteriorated significantly over the two year follow-up period (p < .001), all MacNew scale scores still remained significantly higher than the pre-rehabilitation values. The mean improvement after two years in the MacNew social scale exceeded the minimal important difference while MacNew scale scores greater than the minimal important difference were reported by 40-49% of the patients.</p> <p>Two years after rehabilitation the mean improvement in the EQ-5D Visual Analogue Scale score was not significant with no significant change in the proportion of patients reporting problems at this time.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These findings provide a first indication that two years following inpatient cardiac rehabilitation in Austria, the long-term improvements in HRQL are statistically significant and clinically relevant for almost 50% of the patients. Future controlled randomized trials comparing different cardiac rehabilitation programs are needed.</p

The Institute of Fruit Breeding has a long tradition in breeding resistant apple cultivars. Systematic resistance breeding started in the 1930 ties in MĂŒncheberg. Material developed in MĂŒncheberg was transferred in the 1970 ties to the Institute for Fruit Research, the antecessor of the Institute of Fruit Breeding. Based on this material, a couple of multiple resistant cultivars were generated. The time schedule for combining biotic and abiotic resistant traits which demonstrates the long-lasting period necessary for systematic resistance breeding is given. An overview of resistant cultivars of Dresden-Pillnitz and the respective resistant traits is presented. This assortment of cultivars was developed to provide a resistant cultivar for each ripening group and every application in fruit growing.
Modern resistance breeding is focused on quality and combination of different resistance genes for each pathogene to achieve durable resistance. Selection is facilitated by genetic markers. Likewise the look for new resistance genes, the analyses of genetics and the development of basic material are main areas of interest. Practical approaches in apple breeding to reach these aims are reported
