    Evaluation of development policy: Treatment versus program effects

    There is a growing interest, notably in development economics, in extending project evaluation methods to the evaluation of multiple interventions (“programs”). In program evaluations one is interested in the aggregate impact of a program rather than the effect on individual beneficiaries. In many situations randomized controlled trials cannot identify this impact. We propose a measure of program impact, the total program effect (TPE), which is a generalization of the treatment effect on the treated (ATET). We show how the TPE can be estimated

    Investment under risk with discrete and continuous assets

    This paper considers a general class of stochastic dynamic choice models with discrete and continuous decision variables. This class contains a variety of models that are useful for modeling intertemporal household decisions under risk. Our examples are drawn from the field of development economics. We formalize this class as a dynamic programming problem, then propose a solution method that relies on value function iteration. Finally, in an example we show how our algorithm can be applied to solve and estimate a dynamic model with discrete and continuous controls

    Effectiveness of Large Scale Water and Sanitation Interventions: the One Million Initiative in Mozambique

    The One Million Initiative aims for 70% of the population using safe drinking water and 50% using improved sanitation in 18 districts in three provinces of central Mozambique. This paper evaluates health effects of the initiative using a panel survey, analyzing the contributions of latrine ownership, hand washing, and use of improved water sources to health. It is unique in providing rigorous evaluation of such a large scale WASH program. The authors find a large impact of CLTS on adults and older children, and a similar impact in improved water sources on health of young children

    Light-emitting poly(dendrimers)

    Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have great potential for displays and lighting applications. For large area displays the ideal materials would be both phosphorescent and solution processible. These requirements mean that the materials need to be able to be patterned and the most advanced method for forming pixelated displays is inkjet printing. Light-emitting phosphorescent dendrimers have given high efficiency monochrome displays with the emitting layer deposited by spin-coating. However, the viscosity of the dendrimer solutions is insufficient for inkjet printing. We report the development of a new class of light-emitting materials, namely poly(dendrimers) in which a green emissive phosphorescent dendrimer is attached to a poly(styrene) backbone. Free radical polymerization of a dendrimer-styrene monomer gave a poly(dendrimer) with a weight average molecular weight of 24000 and a polydispersity of 3.6. A dilute Solution of the dendrimer had a viscosity 15% higher than the neat solvent. Comparison of the photophysical studies of the poly(dendrimer) versus a model monomer dendrimer showed that the PL spectrum was broader and red-shifted, and the PL quantum yield around 50% lower. This was attributed to intermolecular interactions of the emissive dendrimers, which are held closely together oil the polymer backbone

    The cardiovascular risk profile of middle-aged women with polycystic ovary syndrome

    Objectives: Contradictory results have been reported regarding the association between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). We assessed the cardiometabolic phenotype and prevalence of CVD in middle-aged women with PCOS, compared with age-matched controls from the general population, and estimated 10-year CVD risk and cardiovascular health score. Design: A cross-sectional study. Participants: 200 women aged >45 with PCOS, and 200 age-matched controls. Measurements: Anthropometrics, insulin, lipid levels, prevalence of metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes. Ten-year Framingham risk score and the cardiovascular health score were calculated, and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) was measured. Results: Mean age was 50.5 years (SD = 5.5) in women with PCOS and 51.0 years (SD = 5.2) in controls. Increased waist circumference, body mass index and hypertension were more often observed in women with PCOS (P <.001). In women with PCOS, the prevalence of type II diabetes and metabolic syndrome was not significantly increased and lipid levels were not different from controls. cIMT was lower in women with PCOS (P <.001). Calculated cardiovascular health and 10-year CVD risk were similar in women with PCOS and controls. Conclusions: Middle-aged women with PCOS exhibit only a moderately unfavourable cardiometabolic profile compared to age-matched controls, even though they present with an increased BMI and waist circumference. Furthermore, we found no evidence for increased (10-year) CVD risk or more severe atherosclerosis compared with controls from the general population.     Large-scale phenotyping of patients with long COVID post-hospitalization reveals mechanistic subtypes of disease

    One in ten severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infections result in prolonged symptoms termed long coronavirus disease (COVID), yet disease phenotypes and mechanisms are poorly understood1. Here we profiled 368 plasma proteins in 657 participants ≥3 months following hospitalization. Of these, 426 had at least one long COVID symptom and 233 had fully recovered. Elevated markers of myeloid inflammation and complement activation were associated with long COVID. IL-1R2, MATN2 and COLEC12 were associated with cardiorespiratory symptoms, fatigue and anxiety/depression; MATN2, CSF3 and C1QA were elevated in gastrointestinal symptoms and C1QA was elevated in cognitive impairment. Additional markers of alterations in nerve tissue repair (SPON-1 and NFASC) were elevated in those with cognitive impairment and SCG3, suggestive of brain–gut axis disturbance, was elevated in gastrointestinal symptoms. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) was persistently elevated in some individuals with long COVID, but virus was not detected in sputum. Analysis of inflammatory markers in nasal fluids showed no association with symptoms. Our study aimed to understand inflammatory processes that underlie long COVID and was not designed for biomarker discovery. Our findings suggest that specific inflammatory pathways related to tissue damage are implicated in subtypes of long COVID, which might be targeted in future therapeutic trials
