En el decurso de la historia, los filósofos y pensadores han elaborado diversas teorías para explicar el ser y la esencia del arte; es decir, la realidad del arte a partir de su existencia como consecuencia de la actividad del hombre, ya que el arte sólo se da como resultado de la acciones de los seres humanos. Las corrientes de pensamiento han ofrecido diferentes respuestas en función de las circunstancias concretas de cada época y, desde mediados del siglo XIX, ha tenido suma importancia la llamada reflexión formalista, en la que destacan sobremanera los intelectuales germánicos. Con todo, si se analiza el fenómeno, al final no hay más remedio que regresar a la filosofía griega por cuanto, mutatis mutandis, el planteamiento formalista poco añade a lo que en su tiempo ya dejó planteado Aristóteles con su conocida teoría del hilemorfismo.Abstract : In the course of history, philosophers and thinkers have developed various theories to explain the being and essence of art; that is, the reality of art from its existence as a result of human activity, and that art exists only in humans.
