    Nutritive and sensory quality of commercial dry - fermented sausages - ā€ÄŒAJNAā€ type with different salt content

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of dry-fermented pork sausages ā€“ ā€œÄajnaā€ type from the market, with similar composition and different salt content. Physicochemical parameters of selected samples were determined and sensory quality parameters were evaluated. In samples M and D, with significantly higher (P ā‰¤ 0.05) sodium chloride content, higher values of color parameter a* and breaking force and lower values of pH and water activity were found compared to samples T and L. Sample D had the highest protein (25.51%) and sodium chloride content (5.04%), and the lowest fat content (30.04%). Samples M and D had significantly higher sensory quality, especially odor, aroma, taste, consistency and cross-section, compared to other samples. These samples were evaluated as sausages with a pronounced pleasant aroma, taste and odor characteristic for dry-fermented products, with pleasant salinity, appropriate for the product. Although the dry-fermented sausage samples with a lower salt content had more acceptable nutritive values, their sensory quality was lower than expected

    Applying Heat for Joining Textile Materials

    The middle of the last century presents the beginning of a wide use of heat technologies for joining of the textile materials. Up to now, adhesive bonding/fusing of textile materials by application of heat and pressure during the determinate time has become a wideā€use technology for manufacturing numerous kinds of textile products, such as outdoor and sport garments, underwear, swimming suits, medical gowns, toys, and automotive seating fabrics. Fusing and welding technologies of textiles represent today a significant competition to traditional sewing, because the technological process is quick and energy efficient. The welding and fusing of textiles represent a great opportunity for providing a good performance as well as aesthetic appearance. New types of fusing/welding machines with high technological solutions regarding the functions, low energy consumptions, and environmentalā€friendly effects are placed on the market. This chapter presents fusing, hot air and hot wedge welding techniques, suitable for joining of textile materials. The theoretical background and fundamental working principles of the equipment for each technology are presented in the first part of the chapter. Special attention is given to presentation of thermoplastic adhesives, textile substrates for fusible interlinings, and welding tapes. Next, the fusing/welding methods and their parameters are described, and the methods for quality evaluation of fused/welded panels are presented. The effect of fusing/welding parameters, selected methods depending on applied fabrics, fusible interlinings and welding tapes, and used fusing/welding machines are discussed separately. Factors effecting the quality of fused and hot air/wedge welded panels are supported with latest scientific findings. The advantages and disadvantages of the presented techniques are discussed together with the applications areas of each of the presented techniques. The new application opportunities are also highlighted at the end of the chapter

    Effects of high dose olive leaf extract on the hemodynamic and oxidative stress parameters in normotensive and spontaneously hypertensive rats

    The antihypertensive activity of olive leaf extract (OLE), a natural antioxidant is recognized, but its influence on the cardiovascular system when administered in a high dose has not yet been investigated. The aim of the present study was to determine the acute effects of excessive intake of standardized OLE on blood pressure, heart rate and oxidative status in both spontaneously hypertensive rats and normotensive Wistar rats. The systolic arterial pressure and heart rate were measured using a tail-cuff and pneumatic pulse detector before and 60 and 120 min after intragastric OLE administration. The activities of catalase, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione reductase in erythrocytes, as well as lipid peroxidation in plasma (pTBARS) were measured spectrophotometrically at the same time points. A high-dose of OLE did not influence blood pressure, heart rate or pTBARS in normotensive rats, while the SOD, catalase and glutathione reductase activities were significantly increased. The same dose significantly decreased blood pressure in hypertensive rats, but increased the pTBARS and SOD activity. Excessive oral intake of OLE induced moderate hypotensive effects only in spontaneously hypertensive rats, suggesting the absence of harmful hemodynamic effects after an oral overdose in both rat strains. However, its pro-oxidative role when given in a high dose in hypertensive organisms should not be neglected

    Clinical and Morphological Characteristics of Cutaneous Melanoma

    The incidence of cutaneous melanoma has increased significantly worldwide over the last several decades. The aim of this study is to determine clinical and morphology characteristics of primary melanoma, since some of them are important prognostic factors. This retrospective study included 172 patients. The data were collected by the Consulting team for malignant skin tumors in the Banja Luka Clinical Centre from 2009 to 2011. We did not use dermoscopy as a diagnostic tool in our investigation. We determined that melanoma occurs equally commonly in both sexes, in women in the sixth decade and the seventh in men. The most common sub-type was nodular melanoma (59.5%, P&lt;0.05), followed by superficial spreading (27.8%) and acral lentiginous melanoma (11.4%). The most common localization was on the back in men (34.3%) and on the legs in women (P&lt;0.05). More than half of our patients (55.8%) had melanoma thickness from 1.0 to 4.0 mm, and 38% had a melanoma thicker than 4.0 mm. The average Breslow thickness is 4.6 mm. More women than men had melanoma thicker than 4 mm (P&lt;0.05). Spread of the primary tumor localization was found in 31.4% of patients, more frequently in men than in women (P&lt;0.05). In most cases it was abstraction of lymph nodes (P&lt;0.05). The average thickness of the melanoma in our patients is much higher than the average in the world and the countries of Europe. The results of this study indicate a need for better unique regional registry in this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina and improvement of preventive measures in the early diagnosis of melanoma.</p

    Study of microstructure and magnetic properties of optimally annealed R/Q Nd4.5Fe77B18.5 alloy

    The rapid-quenched (R/Q) and subsequently optimally annealed Nd-Fe-B alloy with 12 wt% Nd was characterized using the X-Ray diffractometry (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. It was found that microstructure of the investigated alloy mainly consist of Fe3B, Nd2Fe14B phases and minor content of Ī±-Fe phase, with mean crystal grain sizes being below 30 nm. The ferromagnetic exchange coupling between the grains of identified hard and soft magnetic phases has direct influence on the magnetic properties as it is illustrated by SQUID hysteresis loop. Correlation of the measured magnetic properties with results of microstructure analysis indicates that the investigated rapid-quenched Nd-Fe-B alloy has the nanocomposite structure in optimal magnetic state

    An investigation into the effects of excipients on quality characteristics of a dry herbal extract containing capsule

    Nutrition and dietary supplements have a significant role in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Olive and vine leaves, thanks to their constituents, represent powerful natural antioxidants exhibiting cardioprotective activity. High concentrations of active ingredients can be provided by means of extraction. Dry herbal extracts are highly sensitive to moisture and elevated temperature and from the pharmaceutical and technological point of view these are raw materials with inadequate technological properties. The aim of this study was to investigate and to compare the influence of different excipients in capsule formulation of these two dry extracts i.e. the selection of excipients that will ensure appropriate critical process parameters in the manufacturing procedure. The monitored quality characteristics include flowability, bulk density and tapped density that are critical for technological feasibility of the capsule-filling operation. The effects of excipients on the above parameters have been experimentally studied and the appropriate capsule formulations have been developed based on the obtained results, which will ensure homogeneity and stability of the preparation

    Stable Lead Isotope Compositions in Coal, Coal Ash and Coal Fly Ash From Serbia

    The Republic of Serbia predominantly produces electricity in thermal power plants (TPP) Nikola Tesla (A i B), Kolubara and Kostolac. They are supplied from Kolubara basin mines (Nikola Tesla (A i B), Kolubara) which produces three quarters of Serbian lignite (about 70%), with the mean annual production about 30 million tons of coal and from Kostolac basin (TE Kostolac) which produces 30% of lignite in Serbia. Coal combustion residuals include bottom ash, fly ash and slag. Environmental pollution by coal ash and fly ash has been intensively studied taking into account high content of potentially hazardous elements such as As, Pb, Cd and Cr. Tracking lead sources in environmental studies has usually been performed by stable lead isotopes. The pres- ence, pathways and environmental impact of coal ash and fly ash can be identified using Pb isotopic compositions. In this study, isotopic compositions for 12 coal samples from Kolubara and Kostolac major coal mines and 12 fly ash samples from thermal power plants Kolubara (A and B), Kostolac (A and B), Nikola Tesla TENT (A3, A2, and B1) were determined. Samples were digested in mineral acids mixture. Lead conc- entration and stable Pb isotopes were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).     Highly potent antioxidant olea europaea l. Leaf extract affects carotid and renal haemodynamics in experimental hypertension: the role of oleuropein

    Haemodynamic alterations in carotid and renal arteries are associated with the severity of target organ damage in patients with hypertension. Dietary habits, such as the Mediterranean diet, regulate blood pressure and oxidative stress, thus reduce the mortality rate due to cardiovascular diseases. In this study, our aim was to evaluate the reducing activity, antioxidant capacity and metal chelating ability of standardized Olea europaea L. leaf extract (OLE), and to test its (5, 25, 50 mg/kg) acute in vivo effects, as well as oleuropein's (OP, 10 mg/kg) on oxidative stress, carotid, renal and systemic haemodynamic parameters (blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac output, peripheral resistance) in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). OLE has a higher antioxidative capacity than BHT, higher reducing ability than vitamin C, and 23 times lower capacity for metal ion chelation than EDTA. All three doses of OLE, and OP, improved oxidative stress in SHR. OLE5 improved carotid and renal haemodynamics, without significant effects on systemic haemodynamics. Two different mechanisms of antihypertensive responses to OLE were observed, OLE25 was most effective in reducing cardiovascular risks by improving systemic and regional (carotid and renal) haemodynamics, peripheral and regional vascular resistance. OLE50 causes the improvement of blood pressure and cardiac performances, but tends to retain elevated vascular resistance, therefore, reducing the inflow of blood into the brain and kidneys of the SHR. The OP did not alter systemic or regional haemodynamics, suggesting others constituents responsible for changes of cardiac function, as well as carotid and renal haemodynamics in response to OLE50

    Washing treatment impact on print quality of screen printed knitted fabrics

    The surface of textile materials is highly textured, commonly in non-uniform ways. Because of this texture effect, textile surface appears rougher and more porous than other printing substrates, which can cause excessive ink penetration during printing process. Next, washing process is very important factor because it influences ink characteristics on printed samples as well as structural changes of the textile substrate. The aim of this paper is to determine the influences of washing process and different mesh tread count used for printing on print quality. This will be obtained by using spectrophotometric analysis, and GLCM image processing method for print mottle estimation. The results of this research show that increasing number of washing processes leads to higher color differences reproduction color in comparison to printed materials before washing. It also shows that textile surface texture has a great influence on print mottle as well as that number of washing treatment series can generate variations of solid-tone print uniformity.
