VALIDATION OF AN AUTOMATED BEHAVIOR MONITORING COLLAR, AND EVALUATION OF HEAT STRESS ON LACTATING DAIRY COW BEHAVIOR WITH ACCESS TO A FREE CHOICE SOAKER

Precision dairy technologies (PDT) are becoming more accessible and are therefore becoming more common on commercial dairy farms and in dairy research. Prior to any use of PDT, one should understand the precision, accuracy and bias of the device by a validations studies before interpreting the behavior measurements. Thus, the objective of the first section of my thesis is to validate ruminating, feeding and resting measurements of a behavior monitoring collar used in the second section. Precision dairy technology is used in heat stress studies to compare behavior of cows exposed to different heat stress treatments or abatement strategies. Heat stress is an important issue to research because it negatively affects cow behavior, physiology, and therefore production in lactating dairy cows. The objective of the second section is to assess the ability of a free choice soaker to reduce heat stress measured utilizing PDT and compare use of a free choice to a soaker in addition to one of the two treatments 1) no mandatory soakings, or 2) two mandatory soakings

Non-engagement in psychosis: a narrative analysis of service-users’ experiences of relationships with mental health services

Introduction: Non-engagement with treatment is a familiar problem for health services and has been identified as a particularly important issue for those who experience psychosis. The therapeutic relationship between service-users and clinicians is considered to be crucial to good engagement. The extent to which requirements of engagement with treatments and mental health services represent a threat to the individual’s autonomy is a potential factor in non-engagement. Reactance theory has attempted to explain this phenomenon. However, relationships are complex and reactance theory does not reflect this. The exploration of narratives is an opportunity to develop an understanding of the intricacies of these therapeutic relationships. Methods : Interviews were conducted with 11 participants who were recovering from an episode of psychosis. Narrative Analysis of the transcripts was undertaken. During the process interpretation of the transcripts required the introduction of Dialogical Self Theory. Results: Three self-positions were identified through which participant’s narrated their experiences. Defiant, Subordinate and Reflective-Conciliatory positions were described. Discussion: Narratives surrounding recovery and engagement with services can appear complex, contradictory and fragmented. They are narrated by different self-positions. This understanding of the complexity of narratives may be helpful in guiding clinicians in maintaining a wider awareness of the multidimensional nature of individuals’ understandings of their experiences of recovery and relationships with services

Although web sites are repositories, that view limits our ability to understand the different uses that individuals and organizations have found for the WWW. Many different kinds of collectives are using the WWW to support their needs. Identifying these different kinds of collaboration helps us to understand how new technologies shape social practices while simultaneously the technology is being shaped by those practice

Practical Strategies for Integrating a Conversation Analyst in an Iterative Design Process

We present a case study of an iterative design process that includes a conversation analyst. We discuss potential benefits of conversation analysis for design, and we describe our strategies for integrating the conversation analyst in the design process. Since the analyst on our team had no previous exposure to design or engineering, and none of the other members of our team had any experience with conversation analysis, we needed to build a foundation for our interaction. One of our key strategies was to pair the conversation analyst with a designer in a highly interactive collaboration. Our tactics have been effective on our project, leading to valuable results that we believe we could not have obtained using another method. We hope that this paper can serve as a practical guide to those interested in establishing a productive and efficient working relationship between a conversation analyst and the other members of a design team.Comment: 11 page

Interpreting angular momentum transfer between electromagnetic multipoles using vector spherical harmonics

The transfer of angular momentum between a quadrupole emitter and a dipole acceptor is investigated theoretically. Vector spherical harmonics are used to describe the angular part of the field of the mediating photon. Analytical results are presented for predicting angular momentum transfer between the emitter and absorber within a quantum electrodynamical framework. We interpret the allowability of such a process, which appears to violate conservation of angular momentum, in terms of the breakdown of the isotropy of space at the point of photon absorption (detection). That is, collapse of the wavefunction results in loss of all angular momentum information. This is consistent with Noether’s Theorem and demystifies some common misconceptions about the nature of the photon. The results have implications for interpreting the detection of photons from multipole sources and offers insight into limits on information that can be extracted from quantum measurements in photonic systems
