    Minimal affinizations as projective objects

    We prove that the specialization to q=1 of a Kirillov-Reshetikhin module for an untwisted quantum affine algebra of classical type is projective in a suitable category. This yields a uniform character formula for the Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules. We conjecture that these results holds for specializations of minimal affinization with some restriction on the corresponding highest weight. We discuss the connection with the conjecture of Nakai and Nakanishi on q-characters of minimal affinizations. We establish this conjecture in some special cases. This also leads us to conjecture an alternating sum formula for Jacobi-Trudi determinants.Comment: 25 page

    Cryptic Species: A Mismatch between Genetics and Morphology in Millepora

    Millepore morphology is highly variable and shows signs of phenotypic plasticity. Two species of Millepora are present around the islands of the Bahamas: one exhibiting a strong, blade-like structure, Millepora complanata, and the other having a delicate branch-like structure, Millepora alcicornis. The phylogenetic relationship of these corals has been under considerable debate for many years. The existence of a range of intermediate growth forms exhibiting characteristics of both recognized species has led to the re-examination of this species complex. Several methods were employed to examine the taxonomic relationship including ecological abundance surveys, morphological thin-section analysis, and sequencing of rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. Abundance surveys showed a demarcation of growth forms by depth at two sites but an intermingling of growth forms at a third site. Morphometric analysis resulted in discrimination between M. alcicornis, M. complanata and the intermediate growth forms. However, rDNA sequence differences revealed the presence of two distinct clades, each containing members of the two currently recognized species as well as intermediate growth forms. The sequence analysis suggests the presence of two, phenotypically plastic cryptic species. Although limited in scope, our results indicate that caution should be exercised when describing species based on morphology alone and that multiple characters, including genetic information, should be used when describing species relationships

    A model of human event detection in multiple process monitoring situations

    It is proposed that human decision making in many multi-task situations might be modeled in terms of the manner in which the human detects events related to his tasks and the manner in which he allocates his attention among his tasks once he feels events have occurred. A model of human event detection performance in such a situation is presented. An assumption of the model is that, in attempting to detect events, the human generates the probability that events have occurred. Discriminant analysis is used to model the human's generation of these probabilities. An experimental study of human event detection performance in a multiple process monitoring situation is described and the application of the event detection model to this situation is addressed. The experimental study employed a situation in which subjects simulataneously monitored several dynamic processes for the occurrence of events and made yes/no decisions on the presence of events in each process. Input to the event detection model of the information displayed to the experimental subjects allows comparison of the model's performance with the performance of the subjects

    The palaeoceanography of the Leeuwin Current : implications for a future world

    Long-term progressive changes of the Leeuwin Current are linked to plate and ocean basin ‘geography’ and Cenozoic global climates and palaeoceanography. Suggestions of the presence of a proto-Leeuwin Current as early as late Middle to Late Eocene times (c. 35–42 Ma) cannot be verified by the fossil record of the western margin of Australia. “Leeuwin Current style” circulation around Australia was certainly established by the early Oligocene, in response to palaeogeographic changes in the Tasman Strait. This, followed by tectonic eorganisation of the Indonesian Archipelago throughout the Miocene, provided a palaeogeographic setting, which by the Pliocene was essentially that of today. The subsequent history of the Leeuwin Current comprises climatically-induced changes operating over orbital and sub-orbital temporal scales. Specifically, the advent of Pleistocene-style climates, especially over the last 800 000 years, and their associated interglacial – glacial states provide the two end-member climate-ocean states that have characterised Leeuwin Current activity during that time. Indications of the nature of these contrasting states is provided by: (i) the Last Interglacial (c. 125 Ka) during which sea level was higher by some +4 m, and with higher sea surface temperatures (SSTs) clearly indicating a more ‘active’ Leeuwin Current; and (ii) the Last Glacial Maximum (21 Ka), during which sea level wassome 130 m lower than today, resulting in massive shelf extensions along the coast of Western Australia, ccompanied by reduced Indonesian Throughflow, lower low latitude SSTs and changes in the Western Pacific Warm Water Pool, and with these changes, possibly reduced Leeuwin Current activity. Sub-orbital scale luctuations in current strength are driven by global climate change associated with El Niño – La Niña events as well as regional climatic changes driven by volcanism. These forcing mechanisms operate at time scales well within the reach of human experience, and provide important comparative data for predicting the response of the Leeuwin Current to climate change predicted for this century. Studies of the impact of changes in the vigour of the Leeuwin Current on shallow marine communities are in their infancy. Coupling climate models with geological analogues provide important research agenda for predicting the trajectory of future changes to the Leeuwin Current and their impacts on the marine biota of coastal Western Australia

    Impact of Line-of-Sight and Unequal Spatial Correlation on Uplink MU-MIMO Systems

    Closed-form approximations of the expected per-terminal signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) and ergodic sum spectral efficiency of a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output system are presented. Our analysis assumes spatially correlated Ricean fading channels with maximum-ratio combining on the uplink. Unlike previous studies, our model accounts for the presence of unequal correlation matrices, unequal Rice factors, as well as unequal link gains to each terminal. The derived approximations lend themselves to useful insights, special cases and demonstrate the aggregate impact of line-of-sight (LoS) and unequal correlation matrices. Numerical results show that while unequal correlation matrices enhance the expected SINR and ergodic sum spectral efficiency, the presence of strong LoS has an opposite effect.     This paper examines the effect of soft handoff on the uplink user capacity of a CDMA system consisting of a single macrocell in which a single hotspot microcell is embedded. The users of these two base stations operate over the same frequency band. In the soft handoff scenario studied here, both macrocell and microcell base stations serve each system user and the two received copies of a desired user's signal are summed using maximal ratio combining. Exact and approximate analytical methods are developed to compute uplink user capacity. Simulation results demonstrate a 20% increase in user capacity compared to hard handoff. In addition, simple, approximate methods are presented for estimating soft handoff capacity and are shown to be quite accurate.Comment: To appear in IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication

    Uplink User Capacity in a CDMA System with Hotspot Microcells: Effects of Finite Transmit Power and Dispersion

    This paper examines the uplink user capacity in a two-tier code division multiple access (CDMA) system with hotspot microcells when user terminal power is limited and the wireless channel is finitely-dispersive. A finitely-dispersive channel causes variable fading of the signal power at the output of the RAKE receiver. First, a two-cell system composed of one macrocell and one embedded microcell is studied and analytical methods are developed to estimate the user capacity as a function of a dimensionless parameter that depends on the transmit power constraint and cell radius. Next, novel analytical methods are developed to study the effect of variable fading, both with and without transmit power constraints. Finally, the analytical methods are extended to estimate uplink user capacity for multicell CDMA systems, composed of multiple macrocells and multiple embedded microcells.     Uplink Throughput in a Single-Macrocell/Single-Microcell CDMA System, with Application to Data Access Points

    This paper studies a two-tier CDMA system in which the microcell base is converted into a data access point (DAP), i.e., a limited-range base station that provides high-speed access to one user at a time. The microcell (or DAP) user operates on the same frequency as the macrocell users and has the same chip rate. However, it adapts its spreading factor, and thus its data rate, in accordance with interference conditions. By contrast, the macrocell serves multiple simultaneous data users, each with the same fixed rate. The achieveable throughput for individual microcell users is examined and a simple, accurate approximation for its probability distribution is presented. Computations for average throughputs, both per-user and total, are also presented.
