Modeling material failure with a vectorized routine
The computational aspects of modelling material failure in structural wood members are presented with particular reference to vector processing aspects. Wood members are considered to be highly orthotropic, inhomogeneous, and discontinuous due to the complex microstructure of wood material and the presence of natural growth characteristics such as knots, cracks and cross grain in wood members. The simulation of strength behavior of wood members is accomplished through the use of a special purpose finite element/fracture mechanics routine, program STARW (Strength Analysis Routine for Wood). Program STARW employs quadratic finite elements combined with singular crack tip elements in a finite element mesh. Vector processing techniques are employed in mesh generation, stiffness matrix formation, simultaneous equation solution, and material failure calculations. The paper addresses these techniques along with the time and effort requirements needed to convert existing finite element code to a vectorized version. Comparisons in execution time between vectorized and nonvectorized routines are provided
Correlations and fluctuations of a confined electron gas
The grand potential and the response of a phase-coherent confined noninteracting electron gas depend
sensitively on chemical potential or external parameter . We compute
their autocorrelation as a function of , and temperature. The result
is related to the short-time dynamics of the corresponding classical system,
implying in general the absence of a universal regime. Chaotic, diffusive and
integrable motions are investigated, and illustrated numerically. The
autocorrelation of the persistent current of a disordered mesoscopic ring is

Political and Media Discourses about Integrating Refugees in the UK

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.This article addresses political and media discourses about integrating refugees in the UK in the context of the ārefugee crisisā. A discursive psychological approach is presented as the best way to understand what talk about the concept is used to accomplish in these debates. A large corpus of political discussions (13 hours of debate featuring 146 politicians) and 960 newspaper articles from the UK were discourse analysed. The analysis identified five dilemmas about integration: Integration is positive and necessary, but challenging; Host communities are presented as welcoming, but there are limits to their capacity; Refugees are responsible for integration, but host communities need to provide support; Good refugees integrate, bad ones don't; Refugees are vulnerable and are skilled. All are used to warrant the inclusion or exclusion of refugees. The responsibility of western nations to support refugees is therefore contingent on the refugees behaving in specific ways
A Bayesian Approach to Comparing Cosmic Ray Energy Spectra
A common problem in ultra-high energy cosmic ray physics is the comparison of
energy spectra. The question is whether the spectra from two experiments or two
regions of the sky agree within their statistical and systematic uncertainties.
We develop a method to directly compare energy spectra for ultra-high energy
cosmic rays from two different regions of the sky in the same experiment
without reliance on agreement with a theoretical model of the energy spectra.
The consistency between the two spectra is expressed in terms of a Bayes
factor, defined here as the ratio of the likelihood of the two-parent source
hypothesis to the likelihood of the one-parent source hypothesis. Unlike other
methods, for example chi^2 tests, the Bayes factor allows for the calculation
of the posterior odds ratio and correctly accounts for non-Gaussian
uncertainties. The latter is particularly important at the highest energies,

Meteorological satellite products support for project COHMEX
The first year effort focussed on real-time support and satellite data collection during the field phase of COHMEX. Work efforts following the field phase of COHMEX concentrated on post-processing of the real-time data sets, and generation of enhanced, research-quality satellite data sets for selected COHMEX core days. These satellite-derived data sets will augment the special COHMEX conventional data base with high horizontal and temporal resolution information. The data sets will be examined for their usefulness in delineating important elements in the meteorological environment leading to convective activity. In addition, a limited research effort was conducted using the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) 4-d data assimilation system in conjunction with evaluating VISSR Atmospheric Sounder (VAS) and His-resolution Interferometer Sounder (HIS) data. The need to address the characteristics of the data types, and the problems they introduce into 4-d assimilation procedures is evident. The HIS instrument was flown aboard an ER-2 aircraft on several occasions during COHMEX. One of the flights was chosen for further study. Processed VAS soundings and COHMEX radiosonde data were also collected for this day. The case study included an evaluation of the HIS and VAS data and an impact study of the data on the assimilation system analysis
Construction of localized wave functions for a disordered optical lattice and analysis of the resulting Hubbard model parameters
We propose a method to construct localized single particle wave functions
using imaginary time projection and thereby determine lattice Hamiltonian
parameters. We apply the method to a specific disordered potential generated by
an optical lattice experiment and calculate for each instance of disorder, the
equivalent lattice model parameters. The probability distributions of the
Hubbard parameters are then determined. Tests of localization and eigen-energy

I establish the relation of the non-commutative BV-formalism with
super-invariant matrix integration. In particular, the non-commutative
BV-equation, defining the quantum A-infinity-algebras, introduced in "Modular
operads and Batalin-Vilkovisky geometry" IMRN, Vol. 2007, doi:
10.1093/imrn/rnm075, is represented via de Rham differential acting on the
matrix spaces related with Bernstein-Leites simple associative algebras with
odd trace q(N), and with gl(N|N). I also show that the Lagrangians of the

Development of an information sheet providing rapport advice for interpreters in police interviews
The present paper reports the development of an information sheet designed to aid interpreters in police interviews in recognizing, conveying and inadvertently obstructing rapport-building efforts by police interviewers. The contents of this sheet were informed by past research defining rapport, and rapport uses in police interviews. We used a mixed experimental design to test the information sheet. One group (Intervention, n = 35) was randomly assigned to read an information sheet before responding to short vignettes of police interviewing foreign non-English speaking suspects about international crimes, while another (Control) group (n = 37) simply responded to the vignettes. Perceptions of rapport cues by the intervention group exceeded that of the control group. However, the groups performed equally well at identifying appropriate methods to convey/avoid obstructing rapport. Feedback from the intervention group on the helpfulness of the information sheet was largely positive. The findings were used to improve the information sheet which can be used to alert interpreters to the importance of rapport in suspect interviews
