The issue of highly qualified teachers as the key to improving the educational system in the United States has become a primary focus in education. The federal educational policy No Child Left Behind Act 2001, describes what it means to be a highly qualified teacher in core subject areas, and all states are required to use this criterion for defining what teachers should know, and be able to do. Accordingly, certified teachers in today’s public school classrooms must possess the knowledge, skills, and dispositions so that all students, including those students who have been historically disadvantaged and those who are culturally and linguistically diverse are offered equal opportunities for academic success. Teachers are continuously developing knowledge, skills, and dispositions to build their capacities (Grant, 2008). The purpose of this multiple-case study is to describe how these capacities influenced six middle school teachers’ decision making in planning social studies instruction in a Hispanic serving school over time. Henderson and Gornik’s (2007) concept of decision-making in planning curriculum goals served as a framework to conduct this multiple-case study. The data collected through interviews, followed the Seidman’s (2006) model of three-interview series. In addition, data were collected from non-participant observations, written field notes, and social studies lesson plans. The data were first analyzed using Yin’s (2009) case-by-case analysis framework, and then, by applying Stake’s (2006) cross-case analysis. Twenty thematic categories emerged as a result of the case-by-case analyses. These thematic categories served as a preamble for the cross-case analysis from which six themes and two atypical results emerged. The emerged themes across the cases are: (1) effective teamwork; (2) cultural awareness; (3) ownership in learning; (4) caring about student needs; (5) connecting lessons to everyday life; and (6) reflective practices. Implications for practices and further research are provided to help contribute to the body of knowledge regarding teacher capacity. These implications include strategies that can be developed to prepare teachers to effectively plan differentiated instruction for diverse students to help close the achievement gaps

Increased aridity is associated with stronger tradeoffs in ponderosa pine vital functions

2022 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.Trees must allocate resources to core functions, like growth, defense, and reproduction, for populations to persist in the future. A changing climate is leading to more extreme droughts and hotter temperatures, and it is uncertain how trees will allocate resources to these functions under more extreme climatic conditions. Resource allocation patterns vary among individuals and in response to drought stress, limiting our understanding of how forests will respond to climate warming. Yet the impacts of drought on long term trends of reproductive investment have been seldom compared with growth or defensive traits simultaneously. We conducted a 21-year survey of growth, defense (resin duct area), and reproduction (cone production) in 80 ponderosa pine individuals spanning 8 populations along the Front Range of Colorado, USA. We used linear mixed models to describe tradeoffs among these vital functions and to characterize variability among individuals and within individuals over time. Within individual trees, we found a tradeoff over time between growth and reproduction and defense and reproduction, where growth and total resin duct area were lower in years of high cone production. Trees located at sites with hotter and drier climates showed stronger annual tradeoffs between annual reproduction and growth. In contrast, when comparing among trees, we found no evidence that trees with high long-term reproduction invested less in growth or defense. In our study, we found local drought conditions change the year-to-year tradeoffs in allocation between reproduction and growth. Our results support the environmental stress hypothesis of masting, which predicts that greater interannual variation in tree functions (reproduction, growth, defense) is associated with more marginal environments, such as those that are prone to drought. With warming temperatures and increased exposure to drought stress, trees will be faced with stronger interannual tradeoffs, which could lead to further decreases in growth and defensive efforts, ultimately increasing mortality

It may reach water bodies and affect microbial communities. We compared the effects of two commercial formulations and technical-grade glyphosate on a freshwater periphytic community. A laboratory bioassay was carried out with four treatments: technical-grade glyphosate acid, Glifosato II Atanor, Roundup Max, at a concentration of 3 mg active ingredient/L, and Control. At 2, 5 and 9 days after herbicide application, pigments concentration, dry weight, ash-free dry weight, and periphytic algal density were determined. An increase of Cyanobacteria and a decrease of Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta abundances were registered in all treatments with the herbicide. This effect was greater when Roundup Max and Glifosato II Atanor® were added, and was lower with technical-grade glyphosate, suggesting that additives in the commercial formulations may enhance glyphosate effects.Fil: Gonzalez, Daniela. Two Computational Models for Analyzing Political Attention in Social Media

Understanding how political attention is divided and over what subjects is crucial for research on areas such as agenda setting, framing, and political rhetoric. However, existing methods for measuring attention, such as manual labeling ac- cording to established codebooks, are expensive and restric- tive. We describe two computational models that automati- cally distinguish topics in politicians’ social media content. Our models - one supervised classifier and one unsupervised topic model - provide different benefits. The supervised clas- sifier reduces the labor required to classify content accord- ing to pre-determined topic lists. However, tweets do more than communicate policy positions. Our unsupervised model uncovers both political topics and other Twitter uses (e.g., constituent service). Together, these models are effective, in- expensive computational tools for political communication and social media research. We demonstrate their utility and discuss the different analyses they afford by applying both models to the tweets posted by members of the 115th U.S. Congress. This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 1822228.https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/147460/6/Hemphill and Schopke - Two Compuational Models.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/147460/1/Hemphill and Schopke - Two Computational Models.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/147460/8/ICWSM 2020 Two Computational Models.pptx5056Description of Hemphill and Schopke - Two Compuational Models.pdf : Revised articleDescription of Hemphill and Schopke - Two Computational Models.pdf : Main articleDescription of ICWSM 2020 Two Computational Models.pptx : Presentation with scrip

On March 8, 2013, the Berkeley Journal of Gender, Law & Justice hosted an all-day symposium featuring more than forty speakers at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law to celebrate and invite responses to the book entitled, Presumed Incompetent: The Intersections of Race and Class for Women in Academia (Gabriella Gutiérrez y Muhs, Yolanda Flores Niemann, Carmen G. González & Angela P. Harris eds., 2012). Presumed Incompetent presents gripping first-hand accounts of the obstacles encountered by female faculty of color in the academic workplace, and provides specific recommendations to women of color, allies, and academic leaders on ways to eliminate these barriers. The symposium held at Berkeley continued the conversation begun in the book through a series of concurrent and plenary panels, poetry readings, and keynote addresses. Selected papers from the symposium were published in both the Berkeley Journal of Gender, Law & Justice and the Seattle Journal for Social Justice (SJSJ). This introduction discusses and contextualizes the papers published in the Berkeley Journal of Gender, Law & Justice. These papers reflect the exhilarating breadth and depth of the discussions that took place during the symposium. Like the papers published in SJSJ, they enhance our understanding of the hierarchies of the academic workplace, and offer additional tools to promote a more equitable and inclusive campus environment

The CI-ASD Program: Implementation of Contextual Interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorder (CI-ASD) with Latino Families (Preliminary Report)

    Get PDF
Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience sensory processing differences that affect their participation in daily activities and routines. Autism affects an estimated 1 in 36 children in the U.S. However, Latino children are diagnosed two years later than white children. Latino families still have the greatest disparities in accessing ASD resources throughout the U.S. compared to white families. The lack of ASD services and resources led to decreased parental self-efficacy, quality of life, and increased child behavioral problems. Contextual Interventions Adapted for Autism Spectrum Disorder (CI-ASD) are an emerging intervention for occupational therapy (OT) practitioners. Recent literature shows improvement in child participation and parental self-efficacy when combining sensory processing knowledge with a coaching approach within a family-centered context. While some evidence supports the application of CI-ASD in improving children\u27s participation and promoting a sense of efficacy, this intervention has not been implemented within the Latino Community. The purpose of this capstone was to examine the following research questions: Does CI-ASD increase the quality of life in Latino Families? Does CI-ASD promote Latino parenting sense of efficacy? Does CI-ASD promote children\u27s participation in Latino family activities and routines?https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2024/1072/thumbnail.jp

INFORMATION RELATED TO POSTAL FLOWS AND BIG DATA ANALYSIS POTENTIAL. THE CASE OF SPAIN

[EN] National Post Offices manage huge volumes of letters and parcels. Data associated to these flows are growing fast, with a great variety related to the diversity of postal products. The research described in this paper has classified all information flows of Correos, the Spanish National Post Office. In spite of the complexity of the current postal service portfolio, only four categories of matrices allow the classification of all postal information flows. Thanks to the migration towards new products, analyses with simple techniques will provide more and better information in the future, due to the structured nature of existing databases.Martinez Alvaro, O.; Nuñez Gonzalez, A.
