People on the move: trends and prospects in District migration flows
Since the early 1970s, the states of the Tenth Federal Reserve District have experienced wide swings in economic activity and interstate migration. The swings in migration not only reflect the region's economic performance but also have important consequences for future economic activity.> Miller discusses recent trends and prospects for migration into and out of the district. He reviews trends in net migration flows and shows how they correspond with swings in district economic performance. Next, he examines the composition of migrant flows and indicates that a significant brain drain occurred from much of the district in the late 1980s. Theory of polyzwitterion conformations
Conformational characteristics of polyzwitterionic molecules in aqueous
solutions are investigated using the variational method. Analytical relations
are derived for the radius of gyration of a single polyzwitterionic chain as a
function of the chain length, electrostatic interaction strength, added salt
concentration, dipole moment and degree of ionization of the zwitterionic
monomers. In the absence of the small ions (counterions and coions) near the
polyzwitterionic chain, attractive dipole-dipole interactions are shown to
induce a collapse of the polyzwitterionic chain. However, in the presence of
the small ions, the radius of gyration is shown to be an interplay of the
screening of the electrostatic interactions and the counterion adsorption on
the zwitterionic sites. In addition to the well-known Debye-Huckel screening of
the charge-charge interactions, screening of the charge-dipole and
dipole-dipole interactions are found to play important roles in determining the
size of the chain. Functional forms for the screened charge-dipole and
dipole-dipole interaction potentials are presented. Furthermore, counterion
adsorption on the zwitterionic monomers is predicted to be asymmetric depending
on the nature of the added salt and the zwitterionic groups. Qualitative
remarks regarding the solubility of these molecules in aqueous solutions along
with the classical "anti-polyelectrolyte" effect (increase in the solubility in
water with the addition of salt) are presented.Comment: To be appeared in J. Chem. Phy
Transport in bilayer graphene near charge neutrality: Which scattering mechanisms are important?
Using the semiclassical quantum Boltzmann equation (QBE), we numerically
calculate the DC transport properties of bilayer graphene near charge
neutrality. We find, in contrast to prior discussions, that phonon scattering
is crucial even at temperatures below 40K. Nonetheless, electron-electron
scattering still dominates over phonon collisions allowing a hydrodynamic
approach. We introduce a simple two-fluid hydrodynamic model of electrons and
holes interacting via Coulomb drag and compare our results to the full QBE
calculation. We show that the two-fluid model produces quantitatively accurate
results for conductivity, thermopower, and thermal conductivity.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
