Near-wall reconstruction of higher order moments and length scales using the POD
An analysis of the near-wall behavior of the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) eigenfunctions derived from direct numerical simulation (DNS) of channel flow is performed. Consistent with previous studies, a low order multi-mode reconstruction of the kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress suffices. A similar reconstruction of the isotropic dissipation rate is shown to be insufficient, however. An analysis is performed of the multi-mode composition of the dissipation rate in the near-wall region, and it is shown that a significant number of higher-order modes are required to achieve the correct asymptotic consistency in the near-wall region. In an attempt to avoid this problem, a length scale definition is proposed in terms of an integration of the correlation tensor which factors in the presence of the wall. The wall is accounted for by only integrating out to 2y(+) and not over the entire domain. Viscous and inviscid estimates for the dissipation were used in the near-wall and core regions respectively, in conjunction with this length scale representation to obtain an estimate of the dissipation throughout the domain. The resulting dissipation exhibits the proper behavior near the wall and in the inertial layer. A 1 POD mode estimate of the length scale is computed and found to agree quite well with the length scale obtained when the entire correlation tensor is used

Unheilige Bücher. Zur Implosion mythischen Erzählens in der ,Prosa Edda‘
The so called ‘Prose Edda' or ‘Snorra Edda', usually dated to the third decade of the 13th century, contains after a short prologue two substantial sections dealing mainly with mythography and poetics and a long concluding skaldic poem. In the extant medieval manuscripts from around 1300 and the beginning of the 14th century, additional material like genealogies, grammatical treatises, etc. is included. The present paper focuses on one of the earliest of these manuscripts, codex DG 11 4to, University Library Uppsala, and analyses some central features of the specific way in which it presents different narrative layers. For the first time, this analysis combines a study of textual and visual aspects of the manuscript, and special attention is given to two of the many illustrations in this codex. Together with later scribal notes, the drawings contribute heavily to the process of framing, which is one of the main features of the ‘Prose Edda'. This process of creating potentially endless narrative and visual frames is part of the text‘s ambition to establish a distance to the traditional pagan myths and to facilitate new fictional possibilitie
The multiplicity of alternative splicing decisions in Caenorhabditis elegans is linked to specific intronic regulatory motifs and minisatellites
Background: alternative splicing diversifies the pool of messenger RNA molecules encoded by individual genes. This diversity is particularly high when multiple splicing decisions cause a combinatorial arrangement of several alternate exons. We know very little on how the multiple decisions occurring during the maturation of single transcripts are coordinated and whether specific sequence elements might be involved.Results: here, the Caenorhabditis elegans genome was surveyed in order to identify sequence elements that might play a specific role in the regulation of multiple splicing decisions. The introns flanking alternate exons in transcripts whose maturation involves multiple alternative splicing decisions were compared to those whose maturation involves a single decision. Fifty-eight penta-, hexa-, and hepta-meric elements, clustered in 17 groups, were significantly over-represented in genes subject to multiple alternative splicing decisions. Most of these motifs relate to known splicing regulatory elements and appear to be well conserved in the related species Caenorhabditis briggsae. The usage of specific motifs is not linked to the gene product function, but rather depends on the gene structure, since it is influenced by the distance separating the multiple splicing decision sites. Two of these motifs are part of the CeRep25B minisatellite, which is also over-represented at the vicinity of alternative splicing regions. Most of the remaining motifs are not part of repeated sequence elements, but tend to occur in specific heterologous pairs in genes subject to multiple alternative splicing decisions.Conclusions: the existence of specific intronic sequence elements linked to multiple alternative splicing decisions is intriguing and suggests that these elements might have some specialized regulatory role during splicing
Optimal active vibration absorber: Design and experimental results
An optimal active vibration absorber can provide guaranteed closed-loop stability and control for large flexible space structures with collocated sensors/actuators. The active vibration absorber is a second-order dynamic system which is designed to suppress any unwanted structural vibration. This can be designed with minimum knowledge of the controlled system. Two methods for optimizing the active vibration absorber parameters are illustrated: minimum resonant amplitude and frequency matched active controllers. The Controls-Structures Interaction Phase-1 Evolutionary Model at NASA LaRC is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the active vibration absorber for vibration suppression. Performance is compared numerically and experimentally using acceleration feedback
Sentiment Recognition in Egocentric Photostreams
Lifelogging is a process of collecting rich source of information about daily
life of people. In this paper, we introduce the problem of sentiment analysis
in egocentric events focusing on the moments that compose the images recalling
positive, neutral or negative feelings to the observer. We propose a method for
the classification of the sentiments in egocentric pictures based on global and
semantic image features extracted by Convolutional Neural Networks. We carried
out experiments on an egocentric dataset, which we organized in 3 classes on
the basis of the sentiment that is recalled to the user (positive, negative or
neutral)
