Unterstützung des wissenschaftlichen Publizierens als Aufgabe einer wissenschaftlichen Bibliothek: Die Publikationsservices an der UB Graz

Die Publikationsservices, eine Servicestelle der Universität Graz, die von der Universitätsbibliothek als Stabsstelle errichtet wurde, zeigen, dass die Universitätsbibliothek im Bereich des wissenschaftlichen Publizierens eine wesentliche Rolle einnimmt. An der Universitätsbibliothek Graz wurde nicht nur innerhalb der Bibliothek Wissen zu verschiedenen Aspekten des wissenschaftlichen Publizierens zusammengeführt, vor allem wurde von der Bibliothek eine Kooperation unterschiedlicher Einrichtungen an der Universität initiiert, die in den Bereichen Forschungsunterstützung und -bewertung tätig sind, darunter Forschungsmanagement und -service sowie Leistungs- und Qualitätsmanagement. Die Bibliothek übernimmt dabei die Koordination und somit die Führungsrolle. Ziele und Aufgabenbereiche der neuen Einrichtung wurden zum einen maßgeblich durch die bereits vorhandene Expertise an der Universitätsbibliothek aus den Bereichen Universitätsverlag, Open-Access-Repositorium, Bibliometrie, Open-Access-Abkommen und Forschungsdatenmanagement und zum anderen werden sie durch die Bedürfnisse der Angehörigen der Universität, im Besonderen Lehrende und Forschende, sowie die anhaltenden Veränderungen im Bereich der wissenschaftlichen Kommunikation geprägt. Der Beitrag stellt zunächst den Themenbereich Publikationsunterstützung beziehungsweise wissenschaftliche Kommunikation als ein Aufgabengebiet für Bibliotheken vor. Dies wird dann anhand des Beispiels der Universitätsbibliothek Graz konkretisiert. Zum Abschluss wird auf weitere Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten der Publikationsservices eingegangen.A university library can assume a pivotal role in the context of scholarly publishing as can be exemplified by the publishing services at the University of Graz. This service point was established by the University Library as a functional unit within its matrix organization. The new unit has not only brought together knowledge and experience regarding various aspects of scholarly publishing available at the university library. More importantly, it has initiated a cooperation between various administrative departments at the University offering services in research support and research assessment, such as the Department for Research Management and the Department of Performance and Quality Management. The University Library, as the coordinator, takes the lead in this cooperation. The scope and tasks of the new service center was determined both by expertise at the University Library in areas such as bibliometrics, open access agreements and research data management, and the needs of the academic staff as well as ongoing developments and changes in the field of scholarly communications. The paper first outlines publishing support and scholarly communications as fields of relevance to library work. The University Library at the University of Graz then serves as an example as to how this can be implemented and integrated in the service portfolio of a library. A final section discusses possible future developments

Predatory Publishing - Herausforderung für Wissenschaftler/innen und Bibliotheken

Predatory Publishing ist seit der umfangreichen internationalen Medienberichterstattung im Sommer 2018 auch der breiten Öffentlichkeit ein Begriff. Zeitschriften, Radio und Fernsehen in zahlreichen Ländern, darunter auch im deutschen Sprachraum, berichteten über mehrere Wochen ausführlich zu diesen betrügerischen Geschäftspraktiken. Das Problem ist in Fachkreisen jedoch bereits seit einigen Jahren bekannt und nimmt seither immer stärker zu. Die Publikationsservices an der Universität Graz beraten und informieren seit 2017 die Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, aber auch die Studierenden zum Thema Predatory Publishing. Der folgende Beitrag bietet bietet im ersten Abschnitt wesentliche Informationen zu Predatory Publishing sowie damit in Zusammenhang stehend, auch die im Zuge der Medienkampagne 2018 kolportierten Themen Fake Science und Fake News, und wendet sich in den folgenden zwei Abschnitten der Praxis zu, wenn es zum einen um die Grundlagen der Auseinandersetzung mit Predatory Publishing an Universitäten geht und zum anderen die Aufklärungsarbeit und Services an der Universität Graz durch Mitarbeiter/innen der Universitätsbibliothek als Fallbeispiel aus der Praxis vorgestellt werden.(VLID)377980

Publication Services at the University Library Graz: A New Venture, a New Role

Establishing Publication Services in the library at the University of Graz did more than broaden the service portfolio of the library. A convergence of expertise at the library, needs of researchers at the university, and ongoing changes in scholarly communication also contributed to the evolution of the library's role and profile. The new services offer first-level support for matters pertaining to scholarly publishing and communications. Furthermore, Publication Services has developed into a knowledge sharing platform, extending beyond the library to other administrative departments and creating a community of practice

Wie viele Spitzenzeitschriften hat das Land? Österreichische Zeitschriften in den Journal Citation Reports - eine Bestandsaufnahme

Austrian journals in the Journal Citation Reports - a bibliometric analysis (translation of the title). The aim of this bibliometric analysis was to examine how many journals from the social sciences and the sciences published in Austria can be found in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR). The respective journals were further evaluated as to which academic discipline they pertain, the respective publisher(s), whether they are freely accessible (open access) and in which quartile they can be found in the impact factor ranking. The analysis made it apparent that there are fewer Austrian journals included in the JCR than in comparable countries. While 551 journals of the Science Edition of the JCR were from Switzerland in 2011, the corresponding number for Austria is only 34. Even Slowenia published more journals (10) in the Social Science Edition in 2011 than Austria (7). Furthermore, most Austrian journals are ranked in the lower quartile of the impact factor ranking. Austrian journals only perform well in the plant sciences. Still, if the impact factor ranking is to be taken as a measure of quality of a journal, Austrian journals overall perform rather poorly. In the sciences half of the journals are published by Springer, while there is no such dominance of any particular publisher in the social sciences. Only few of the journals are open access, one in the social sciences and two in the sciences. This article has been written and the underlying analysis have been performed during a course on bibliometrics, which is part of the post-graduate programme on Library and Information Studies. Therefore, this contribution also aims at demonstrating that such bibliometric analyses are even possible in library education. This should encourage librarians to engage more strongly with similar studies in the discourse not only with colleagues but maybe even in the relevant scientific community
