An Exploratory Study of Lecturers' Views of Out-of-class Academic Collaboration Among Students
This article reports an exploratory study of lecturers' perceptions of out-of-class academic collaboration (OCAC) among students at a large Singapore university. Two types of OCAC were investigated: collaboration initiated by students, e.g., groups decide on their own to meet to prepare for exams, and collaboration required by teachers, e.g., teachers assign students to do projects in groups. Data were collected via one-on-one interviews with 18 faculty members from four faculties at the university. Findings suggest that OCAC, especially of a teacher-required kind, is fairly common at the university. Faculty members' views on factors affecting the success of OCAC are discussed for the light they might shed on practices to enhance the effectiveness of OCAC
PilZ Domain Protein FlgZ Mediates Cyclic Di-GMP-Dependent Swarming Motility Control in Pseudomonas aeruginosa
The second messenger cyclic diguanylate (c-di-GMP) is an important regulator of motility in many bacterial species. In Pseudomonas aeruginosa, elevated levels of c-di-GMP promote biofilm formation and repress flagellum-driven swarming motility. The rotation of P. aeruginosa\u27s polar flagellum is controlled by two distinct stator complexes, MotAB, which cannot support swarming motility, and MotCD, which promotes swarming motility. Here we show that when c-di-GMP levels are elevated, swarming motility is repressed by the PilZ domain-containing protein FlgZ and by Pel polysaccharide production. We demonstrate that FlgZ interacts specifically with the motility-promoting stator protein MotC in a c-di-GMP-dependent manner and that a functional green fluorescent protein (GFP)-FlgZ fusion protein shows significantly reduced polar localization in a strain lacking the MotCD stator. Our results establish FlgZ as a c-di-GMP receptor affecting swarming motility by P. aeruginosa and support a model wherein c-di-GMP-bound FlgZ impedes motility via its interaction with the MotCD stator
How effects on health equity are assessed in systematic reviews of interventions.
BACKGROUND: Enhancing health equity has now achieved international political importance with endorsement from the World Health Assembly in 2009. The failure of systematic reviews to consider effects on health equity is cited by decision-makers as a limitation to their ability to inform policy and program decisions. OBJECTIVES: To systematically review methods to assess effects on health equity in systematic reviews of effectiveness. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the following databases up to July 2 2010: MEDLINE, PsychINFO, the Cochrane Methodology Register, CINAHL, Education Resources Information Center, Education Abstracts, Criminal Justice Abstracts, Index to Legal Periodicals, PAIS International, Social Services Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts, Digital Dissertations and the Health Technology Assessment Database. We searched SCOPUS to identify articles that cited any of the included studies on October 7 2010. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included empirical studies of cohorts of systematic reviews that assessed methods for measuring effects on health inequalities. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Data were extracted using a pre-tested form by two independent reviewers. Risk of bias was appraised for included studies according to the potential for bias in selection and detection of systematic reviews. MAIN RESULTS: Thirty-four methodological studies were included. The methods used by these included studies were: 1) Targeted approaches (n=22); 2) gap approaches (n=12) and gradient approach (n=1). Gender or sex was assessed in eight out of 34 studies, socioeconomic status in ten studies, race/ethnicity in seven studies, age in seven studies, low and middle income countries in 14 studies, and two studies assessed multiple factors across health inequity may exist.Only three studies provided a definition of health equity. Four methodological approaches to assessing effects on health equity were identified: 1) descriptive assessment of reporting and analysis in systematic reviews (all 34 studies used a type of descriptive method); 2) descriptive assessment of reporting and analysis in original trials (12/34 studies); 3) analytic approaches (10/34 studies); and 4) applicability assessment (11/34 studies). Both analytic and applicability approaches were not reported transparently nor in sufficient detail to judge their credibility. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: There is a need for improvement in conceptual clarity about the definition of health equity, describing sufficient detail about analytic approaches (including subgroup analyses) and transparent reporting of judgments required for applicability assessments in order to assess and report effects on health equity in systematic reviews

How Can Vaccines Against Influenza and Other Viral Diseases Be Made More Effective?
A large fraction of the world’s most widespread and problematic pathogens, such as the influenza virus, seem to persist in nature by evading host immune responses by inducing immunity to genetically and phenotypically plastic epitopes (aka antigenic variation). The more recent re-emergence of pandemic influenza A/ H1N1 and avian H5N1 viruses has called attention to the urgent need for more effective influenza vaccines. Developing such vaccines will require more than just moving from an egg-based to a tissueculture–based manufacturing process. It will also require a new conceptual understanding of pathogen–host interactions, as well as new approaches and technologies to circumvent immune evasion by pathogens capable of more genetic variation. Here, we discuss these challenges, focusing on some potentially fruitful directions for future research

Crystallization and preliminary X-ray structural studies of a Melan-A pMHC-TCR complex
Melanocytes are specialized pigmented cells that are found in all healthy skin tissue. In certain individuals, diseased melanocytes can form malignant tumours, melanomas, which cause the majority of skin-cancer-related deaths. The melanoma-associated antigenic peptides are presented on cell surfaces via the class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC). Among the melanoma-associated antigens, the melanoma self-antigen A/melanoma antigen recognized by T cells (Melan-A/MART-1) has attracted attention because of its wide expression in primary and metastatic melanomas. Here, a preliminary X-ray crystal structural study of a soluble cognate T-cell receptor (TCR) in complex with a pMHC presenting the Melan-A peptide (ELAGIGILTV) is reported. The TCR and pMHC were refolded, purified and mixed together to form complexes, which were crystallized using the sitting-drop vapour-diffusion method. Single TCR–pMHC complex crystals were cryocooled and used for data collection. Diffraction data showed that these crystals belonged to space group P4(1)/P4(3), with unit-cell parameters a = b = 120.4, c = 81.6 Å. Mass deworming to improve developmental health and wellbeing of children in low-income and middle-income countries: a systematic review and network meta-analysis
Background Soil-transmitted helminthiasis and schistosomiasis, considered among the neglected tropical diseases by
WHO, aff ect more than a third of the world’s population, with varying intensity of infection. We aimed to evaluate the
eff ects of mass deworming for soil-transmitted helminths (with or without deworming for schistosomiasis or cointerventions)
on growth, educational achievement, cognition, school attendance, quality of life, and adverse eff ects
in children in endemic helminth areas.
Methods We searched 11 databases up to Jan 14, 2016, websites and trial registers, contacted authors, and reviewed
reference lists. We included studies published in any language of children aged 6 months to 16 years, with mass
deworming for soil-transmitted helminths or schistosomiasis (alone or in combination with other interventions) for
4 months or longer, that reported the primary outcomes of interest. We included randomised and quasi-randomised
trials, controlled before–after studies, interrupted time series, and quasi-experimental studies. We screened in
duplicate, then extracted data and appraised risk of bias in duplicate with a pre-tested form. We conducted randomeff
ects meta-analysis and Bayesian network meta-analysis.
Findings We included 52 studies of duration 5 years or less with 1 108 541 children, and four long-term studies
8–10 years after mass deworming programmes with more than 160 000 children. Overall risk of bias was moderate.
Mass deworming for soil-transmitted helminths compared with controls led to little to no improvement in weight over
a period of about 12 months (0·99 kg, 95% credible interval [CrI] −0·09 to 0·28; moderate certainty evidence) or height
(0·07 cm, 95% CrI −0·10 to 0·24; moderate certainty evidence), little to no diff erence in proportion stunted (eight fewer
per 1000 children, 95% CrI −48 to 32; high certainty evidence), cognition measured by short-term attention (−0·23 points
on a 100 point scale, 95% CI −0·56 to 0·14; high certainty evidence), school attendance (1% higher, 95% CI −1 to 3;
high certainty evidence), or mortality (one fewer per 1000 children, 95% CI −3 to 1; high certainty evidence). We found
no data on quality of life and little evidence of adverse eff ects. Mass deworming for schistosomiasis might slightly
increase weight (0·41 kg, 95% CrI −0·20 to 0·91) and has little to no eff ect on height (low certainty evidence) and
cognition (moderate certainty evidence). Our analyses do not suggest indirect benefi ts for untreated children from
being exposed to treated children in the community. We are uncertain about eff ects on long-term economic productivity
(hours worked), cognition, literacy, and school enrolment owing to very low certainty evidence. Results were consistent
across sensitivity and subgroup analyses by age, worm prevalence, baseline nutritional status, infection status, impact
on worms, infection intensity, types of worms (ascaris, hookworm, or trichuris), risk of bias, cluster versus individual
trials, compliance, and attrition.
Interpretation Mass deworming for soil-transmitted helminths with or without deworming for schistosomiasis had
little eff ect. For schistosomiasis, mass deworming might be eff ective for weight but is probably ineff ective for height,
cognition, and attendance. Future research should assess which subset of children do benefi t from mass deworming,
if any, using individual participant data meta-analysis

Sex-related differences in oncologic outcomes, operative complications and health-related quality of life after curative-intent oesophageal cancer treatment: multicentre retrospective analysis
Background: Oesophageal cancer, in particular adenocarcinoma, has a strong male predominance. However, the impact of patient sex on operative and oncologic outcomes and recovery of health-related quality of life is poorly documented, and was the focus of this large multicentre cohort study. Methods: All consecutive patients who underwent oncological oesophagectomy from 2009 to 2015 in the 20 European iNvestigation of SUrveillance after Resection for Esophageal cancer study group centres were assessed. Clinicopathologic variables, therapeutic approach, postoperative complications, survival and health-related quality of life data were compared between male and female patients. Multivariable analyses adjusted for age, sex, tumour histology, treatment protocol and major complications. Specific subgroup analyses comparing adenocarcinoma versus squamous cell cancer for all key outcomes were performed. Results: Overall, 3974 patients were analysed, 3083 (77.6%) male and 891 (22.4%) female; adenocarcinoma was predominant in both groups, while squamous cell cancer was observed more commonly in female patients (39.8% versus 15.1%, P < 0.001). Multivariable analysis demonstrated improved outcomes in female patients for overall survival (HRmales 1.24, 95% c.i. 1.07 to 1.44) and disease-free survival (HRmales 1.22, 95% c.i. 1.05 to 1.43), which was caused by the adenocarcinoma subgroup, whereas this difference was not confirmed in squamous cell cancer. Male patients presented higher health-related quality of life functional scores but also a higher risk of financial problems, while female patients had lower overall summary scores and more persistent gastrointestinal symptoms. Conclusion: This study reveals uniquely that female sex is associated with more favourable long-term survival after curative treatment for oesophageal cancer, especially adenocarcinoma, although long-term overall and gastrointestinal health-related quality of life are poorer in women
TESS Discovery of a Transiting Super-Earth in the Mensae System
We report the detection of a transiting planet around Mensae (HD
39091), using data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The
solar-type host star is unusually bright (V=5.7) and was already known to host
a Jovian planet on a highly eccentric, 5.7-year orbit. The newly discovered
planet has a size of and an orbital period of 6.27
days. Radial-velocity data from the HARPS and AAT/UCLES archives also displays
a 6.27-day periodicity, confirming the existence of the planet and leading to a
mass determination of . The star's proximity and
brightness will facilitate further investigations, such as atmospheric
spectroscopy, asteroseismology, the Rossiter--McLaughlin effect, astrometry,
