Benefits of Session Types for software Development
Session types are a formalism used to specify and check the correctness of communication based systems. Within their scope, they can guarantee the absence of communication errors such as deadlock, sending an unexpected message or failing to handle an incoming message. Introduced over two decades ago, they have developed into a significant theme in programming languages. In this paper we examine the beliefs that drive research into this area and make it popular. We look at the claims and motivation behind session types throughout the literature. We identify the hypotheses upon which session types have been designed and implemented, and attempt to clarify and formulate them in a more suitable manner for testing
Diffraction and the Gluon Mass
We recently proposed a QCD-Pomeron described by the exchange of two
non-perturbative gluons characterized by a dynamically generated gluon mass. It
is here shown that data on elastic scattering, exclusive production in
deep inelastic scattering and the -nucleon total cross-section can be
successfully described in terms of a single gluon mass ~GeV. We
observe that the total cross sections of hadrons with small radii, such as
, have a marked dependence on the effective gluon mass.Comment: 10 pages, Latex, 3 figures available by fax or conventional mail.

How Student Recruitment and Selection Can Impact Reentry Outcomes: Lessons from the Michigan Department of Corrections and Jackson College
In 2013, the Vera Institute of Justice launched the Unlocking Potential: Pathways from Prison to Postsecondary Education Project (Pathways), a five-year multi-state demonstration project aiming to increase educational attainment and employment opportunities for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals by supporting an expansion of educational opportunities in prison. Corrections departments in the states of New Jersey, Michigan, and North Carolina were selected to participate in the initiative. Each college-in-prison program—although executed differently and offering varying programs of study—possessed one common theme: to equip incarcerated persons with the tools necessary to end the cycle of incarceration through high-quality postsecondary education. This paper examines approaches to student recruitment the Michigan site took during its implementation phase and suggests potential outcomes for college-in-prison programs to consider when using the “return communities” approach
On duality relations for session types
Session types are a type formalism used to describe communication protocols over private session channels. Each participant in a binary session owns one endpoint of a session channel. A key notion is that of duality: the endpoints of a session channel should have dual session types in order to guarantee communication safety. Duality relations have been independently defined in different ways and different works, without considering their effect on the type system. In this paper we systematically study the existing duality relations and some new ones, and compare them in order to understand their expressiveness. The outcome is that those relations are split into two groups, one related to the na¨ıve inductive duality, and the other related to a notion of mutual compliance, which we borrow from the literature on contracts for web-services
Flow properties of suspensions rich in solids
Mathematical evaluation of flow properties of fluids carrying high concentrations of solids in suspension relates suspension viscosity to physical properties of the solids and liquids, and provides a means for predicting flow behavior. A technique for calculating a suspensions flow rates is applicable to the design of pipelines
Trisections of 4-manifolds with Boundary
Given a handle decomposition of a 4-manifold with boundary, and an open book
decomposition of the boundary, we show how to produce a trisection diagram of a
trisection of the 4-manifold inducing the given open book. We do this by making
the original proof of the existence of relative trisections more explicit, in
terms of handles. Furthermore, we extend this existence result to the case of
4-manifolds with multiple boundary components, and show how trisected
4-manifolds with multiple boundary components glue together.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figure
Gluon density in nuclei
In this talk we present our detail study ( theory and numbers) [1] on the
shadowing corrections to the gluon structure functions for nuclei. Starting
from rather contraversial information on the nucleon structure function which
is originated by the recent HERA data, we develop the Glauber approach for the
gluon density in a nucleus based on Mueller formula [2] and estimate the value
of the shadowing corrections in this case. Than we calculate the first
corrections to the Glauber approach and show that these corrections are big.
Based on this practical observation we suggest the new evolution equation which
takes into account the shadowing corrections and solve it. We hope to convince
you that the new evolution equation gives a good theoretical tool to treat the
shadowing corrections for the gluons density in a nucleus and, therefore, it is
able to provide the theoretically reliable initial conditions for the time
evolution of the nucleus - nucleus cascade.Comment: Talk at RHIC'96, 43 pages, 23 figure
